Paul Krugman criticizes Obama supporters

The New York Times columnist says the Democratic race is turning into "Nixonland," and that the Obama campaign verges on a cult of personality.

@ stackey-dackey

You said: I salute you Agent Smith. Your the debil...hehe.

I hope you are not trying to confess that you are the Obnoxious Anonymous.

Yep, that's me. Utterly Rovian.

What's the likelihood...

that cythera45 isn't just some Republican operative that has multiple pseudonyms, some outrageously anti-Hillary, some outrageously anti-Obama (that one in fact), and that has so many folks falling for it, reacting to it, and becoming even more strident along the way. As an Obama supporter, I see and record the anti-Obama stuff better, and probably miss some of the anti-Hillary stuff, but not so much that it doesn't exist.

Point being tensions are now elevated and we have gotten ourselves in the position where we will be easier to manipulate, (if we aren't already), by people in whose interest it is that we ratchet up the acrimony. That's a problem whose solution I don't have an answer to. Because if you listen to Krugman, (who, in spite of this conciliatory post, I still think is a hack), and compare him to Frank Rich, you have two Democrats that are highly respected by Democrats but couldn't more forcefully or stridently disagree than they do in their last two columns respectively. What's to become of the Democratic Party in August?

Indeed, as the man says, I fear civil war, especially as we seem to be reacting like lemmings to the worst on each side, as described by pseudonyms that very nearly could not even belong to that side. Joan Walsh even cited these ('Obama supporters' posting letters) in her column! Not good.

i'm voting for obama, but i will support clinton if she's the nominee

i've spent a lot of time thinking about my vote --- especially since this will be the first primary i'm voting in where a nominee hasn't already been decided -- and i've decided to vote for obmama tomorrow. however, i think clinton is an excellent candidate as well and i don't like seeing supporters on either side trying to knock the other down. a good debate will only help both sides and make stronger whoever the democratic nominee is. don't stop voicing your opinion, but please keep it civil.

I'll never vote for Obama

Not in a million years would I vote for a slick neophyte like Obama and risk my children's future on some guy with little experience who promises only a vague kind of hope and a murky new kind of politics to secure the U.S. future. Its Hillary or McCain for me. Never Obama or any senator with only one year of on the job training in Washington.

Cults of personality

Yikes! Krugman comparing the impending "cult of personality" of Obama supporters to the adoration of the flight suit? The "venom" toward Hillary Clinton characterised as an arrogant, lock-step, koolaid-induced desire for the Democrats to once again cut off their nose in spite of their face? Where did this particular aircraft carrier come out of the sea from?

There are a number of Democrats who simply do not trust the Clintons -- and yes, Clintons plural -- for some very good reasons. On the top of my own list is the issue of accountability. This election is as much about the willingness of a next President to dismatle, disown and discard the current abuses of the Bush train wreck that have been foisted upon us, as it is a hope for future politics and policy that reflect a country and not just a cult of personality that abrogates and corrupts power. Good ideas for the reformation of health care, corporate cronyism and militarism are fine on their face. At the rate we are spending and lobbying and back-door-dealing, a little bit of cake to the masses might look pretty good and could represent a pretty cheap buy.

Not astonishingly Hillary has become a "decider". She knows what is best for us and continues to tell us so. She may be right, and I am certainly no cult member of Barak Obama's, but her choice of Katie Couric for an extrememly important interview on "6o Minutes" last night was, well, sigh...

And Mr. Krugman? I really don't like cake. Particularly the icing part of it.

Majorajam

I agree about cythera45. You know what the solution is?

EVERYONE IGNORE CYTHERA45. He/she is just trying to bait you and will use any strategy he/she can to do so. We should not reward that type of behavior. Just take a deep breath and move on.

"no trouble" with Hillary?

"supporters of each candidate should have no trouble rallying behind the other if he or she gets the nod."

I've been a registered democrat since I could vote, but the above statement is reflective of the "group think" mindset which is problematic within our two party system. So, I should have "no trouble" supporting a candidate who INITIATED dirty campaigning in this primary, who voted to authorize a war in Iraq, and who will not even give me a straight answer on whether she supports water-boarding. I'm sorry Krugman - maybe it's what YOU think I SHOULD do, but I don't!

This is not a game - this is our country at stake. Maybe some of us want to make it a better place, rather than engaging in your proposed group think.

Krugman, please take your toys and go home.

@TRenee and Majorajam

Yes, please ignore me. I have succeeded very well--and quite enjoyed--ignoring you. But what you cannot ignore is the weakness of your demigod, who will be destroyed.

Shame on who, Anonymous?

One of the ubiquitous Anonymous posters said, "I call shame on those out there in whatever camp who think that because the media says it is okay they can take low shots at Clinton without taking a closer look at who she is and what she stands for." Do you read the news Turns out Hillary's campaign manager Patti Solis Doyle (the one Hillary insisted upon, despite serious reservations from others in her campaign) failed to let her know that the campaign was out of money until just before the New Hamphshire primary. (Some sources say she lied about the money situation for a while, but whatever. We'll give her the benefit of the doubt and say she was incompetent instead of mendacious.) THEN Bill and Hill decided to "loan" the campaign $5 million, and told the folks running the campaign about it after the fact. They also brought in Maggie Williams as a "temporary helper" who was really the double-secret new campaign manager, until she finally threatened to leave unless they made her the campaign manager for realsies. Could it be they resisted this step because the campaign manager Solis Doyle is Hispanic, and they REALLY need the Hispanic vote in Texas?

This is the "experienced leader ready to be Commander in Chief from Day One."

Seems like who Hillary Clinton is, is an incompetent manager who can't even run her own campaign, and what she stands for is hiring the people who flatter her over the competent, then using passive-aggressive techniques to try and fix things. I loved Hillary as a First Lady and all but I still can't figure out what "experience" she has that qualifies her to be president. I know what a competent woman executive looks like--I live in a state with a popular and effective woman governor. Hillary is smart but she doesn't have what it takes.
