The answer, it turns out, is a little more complicated than "Not Giuliani."

  • I suspect....

... that evangelicals have something in common with many other groups: Their most widely-recognized alleged spokespeople are annoying blowhards who say obnoxious things to get attention.

  • "Bishop Harry Jackson...argued in 2004 that African-Americans should vote to re-elect George W. Bush."

WTF ever for? Because he hadn't disenfranchised all of them yet, so he needed another go at it? How much "assistance" did the good reverend's church receive from the Office of Faith-Based Initiatives?

  • Wonderful if True!

But, here's today's update from Motown's Fundamentalist Font, Bob Dutko:

    McCain: Anathema,

Huckabee: Don't waste your vote, about to bow out, too liberal (???!) anyway,

    Romney: Not so bad,

Condi Rice: Not perfect on abortion, but consider for VP.

Hillary: Go ahead and vote for her if necessary to keep Guiliani out of the White House.

  • meaningless results

It would be very heartening if these results were indicitive of the truth, but they are not. As The War Room says, 'an online poll might have to be taken with a grain of salt', but an online poll of evangelicals?!?!? Puh-lease.

Most real evangelicals don't even read let alone own computers, and the few that do only use them to surf child porn and gamble.

Nope, the real evangelicals are busy handling snakes and speaking in tongues. They'll get on the bus into town and vote republican when the preacher tells them to, but an online poll about politics? No how.

  • God is not a democrat or a republican

But if you listen to the most prominent Christian leaders in America you'll know God favors free markets, lower taxes for rich people, closeted (or no) gays, the "surge," a pro-war version of Christ's teachings, abortion rights outlawed, prisons over programs for the poor, The USA over other countries, Private versus Universal Healthcare.

God hates: assault rifle bans, European style social democracy, free clinics, supporting the troops by bringing them home, organic food, congressional overight.

    Just so we're clear.

  • IRS

Did the IRS investigate the Bishop's church's tax exempt status, for supporting a specific political candidate? They investigated a church that spoke against the Iraq war (not the Catholic Church, of course).

Sorry I forgot, this is Bush's government, not ours, so diffeerent rules for different folks.

  • ain't it the truth

"Most real evangelicals don't even read let alone own computers, and the few that do only use them to surf child porn and gamble."

  • Obama's Church

"Jackson didn't push for any particular Republican candidate today, but he did challenge the legitimacy of the church Obama attends."

I'm not quite sure what this means, I belong to the same denomination, United Church of Christ which derived from two of the oldest Christian denominations in America.

Salon might be interested in libelous attacks that are being made against Obama's home church in Chicago. http://www.ucc.org/news/thomas-denounces-smear-1.html

  • Well, why be concerned with a war you've already won?

How many liberals do you see burning their draft cards these days?

They've already won countless battles on the ground, with nearly 90% of U.S. counties with no abortion provider, intimidation of companies involved with anything to do with the building of abortion clinics, intimidation of doctors to the point that very few will do the procedure, and a young conservative Supreme Court on a collision course with Roe v. Wade.

No, it's those who favor women's rights who should be concerned. Not them.

  • Important to Separate the Mouthpieces

Thanks for posting this, Amanda. It's nice to see a posting that fights the stereotype of evangelicals. Often it's too easy to fall into the branding trap and assume that all evangelicals are free-market, abortion-hating, literal interpretation of the bible believing nuts.

Because if we believe this then it's easy to fall into the trap. The trap set by Republican mouthpieces who say "liberals will call you stupid," "liberals will try to tell you what to do," and "liberals don't understand you."

I see too many posts that make people like Rush Limbaugh look prophetic. Posts that talk about how evangelicals don't get it, that they can't believe how stupid they are, and that mock their faith.

To disagree is one thing, but let's not make Rush Limbaugh look prophetic. Maybe the reason that it might come as a surprise to us that evangelicals have different views is that we hear the mouthpieces and don't take the time to look any further.

  • Perchance to brainwash another innocent into it!

Evangelicals in their sumlimated anger, want to have the power and unlimited opportunity to "Brainwash" other innocent people into their "version" of the Christian religion, just like each and every one of them were "Braisnwashed" and "Emotionally Blackmailed" into it!

  • Of course, everybody here knows Evangelical does not = Fundamentalist, right? Right?

Evangelicals believe in an intense, highly personal relationship with God, while Fundamentalists also believe in Biblical inerrancy. Fundamentalists are, for the most part, an extremist subset of Evangelists.

Evangelicals are not necessarily Creationists. There are liberal Evangelicals; there are Evangelical scientists. A Fundamentalist scientist is a contradiction in terms.

  • The degree of prejudice in these comments is really amazing

Speaking as an evangelical Christian myself, all I can say is "wow" to some of the ignorant things that have been posted here. I'd say more, but I have to get back to my snake-handling. I'm not even supposed to be here anyway -- I only logged on to check out www.nakedhotslutz4hypocriticalchristianz.com.

(P.S. for those interested, I am a supporter of Barack Obama, I am pro-choice, I am anti-death penalty, I am pro-gun control, and I don't think the answer to poverty is for people to "get a job".)

  • Salonistas don't know nothin' 'bout no Christians

    On Barrack's UCC church:

The UCC used to be the Congregational church. They used to be sort of between regular Presbyterians and regular Episcopalians. That is a great spot in the tolerant Protestant church.

Now, we have a fundamentalist movement within UCC. So you cannot judge a UCC church by its cover. Some of them have gone fundamentalist kuckoo.

However, Barack's own church in Chicago is okay. They are rational and tolerant. Halelujiah!

  • PeteyG

The only contact a lot of us have with Evangelicals is when we see those who claim to speak for you in the media.

They certainly give the impression that you are all brainwashed Christobots who are chomping at the bit to impose a Christian version of Sharia law here in the US.

Please forgive us for taking these people at their word.

It would be helpful if we could see someone of an Evangelical persuasion in the media who did not confirm our existing prejudices.

In our defense, I must add that the root word of Evangelical is Evangelize, which I understand means to go out and try to convert others to your way of thinking/worship. A lot of us take a very dim view of that sort of behavior and find it offputting in the extreme.

When was the last time the Atheist Witnesses came trespassing on your property, uninvited in order to try to make you think like them?
