Letters to the Editor

The White House won't say what Bush was told about Iran's (halted) nuclear weapons program.
The letters thread is now closed.
  • "....or they can continue on a path of isolation."

Iran has more allies than we do, don't they?

  • What didn't the president know (and when didn't he know it)?

There aren't enough gigabytes in the world to begin storing the answer to that question.

  • Fire McConnell NOW!

    Clearly, its his "Brownie" moment.

He apparently told Bush new information was in the works and needed to be checked out. BUT he didn't advise Bush to watch what he said publically on the issue of Iran, pending confirmation of the information. In short, by not telling Bush to watch his rhetoric, he set the President up to look like an idiot.

That is, of course, unless the President isn't being 100% truthful about what he knew and when.

But that isn't possible, is it?

  • A Busted Flush ...

"They can come clean with the international community about the scope of their nuclear activities, and fully accept the long-standing offer to suspend their enrichment program and come to the table and negotiate, or they can continue on a path of isolation."

Hmmm, must be a meaning of "negotiation" that completely slipped by me. It seems to mean "You agree to give us everything we want ahead of time and then we'll get together on just how you'll capitulate." I can't for the life of me understand why the Iranians aren't jumping at the chance. Especially when one considers that he recent NIE has shown that there is no reasonable basis for Junior's saber-rattling and demands for sanctions.

When all you've got is a busted flush and everyone knows it, it's best to cut your losses and fold. Bluffing just isn't an option.

  • Someone expects truth from this White House?

What person seriously thinks that the president and his syncophants would admit that they knew about Iran's cessation of nuclear weapon development? Of course it was before they even started to hype another preemptive strike. Of course they knew! And they hoped that the report of the various intelligence organizations wouldn't be released!

And now that it has been released they are spinning it in the best light possible, lying again that "because Iran had a program once, they can have one again." Tough words - but just another case of verbal flatulence.

This administration has lied from day one about their plot to seize control of the Middle East and its oil and other resources. Not that this administration conceived the plot - they are too knowledge-and- truth-challenged. The planning has gone on since the Reagan years and is reinforced by the right wing neocons and evangelicals. If God says so, it must be right! Wrong!

  • Hopefully Bush WILL go to war with Iran

That would be the nail on the coffin for both Iran and the Republican party, the two greatest evils of our day.

And then the meek shall inherit the Earth, as it should be.

  • It's like a broken record

Once again the president demands a state fully disclose to him a program that doesn't exist and will not accept an inspector and intelligence (real intelligence, not those clowns playing at making up intelligence in the Pentagon) confirmed "It doesn't exist" as an answer.

I can already hear the declaration, after the invasion of Iran, that "No one could have predicted that that Iran had no active nuclear weapons program".

  • Maybe...

...if our government starts treating Iran like a sovereign nation with it's own unique strengths, weaknesses, ideas and ideals instead of like a petulant child ("Do what I say or you'll be sorry!") they'd be more willing to, you know, act like a sovereign nation instead of a petulant child.

    Just a thought.

  • What didn't the president know (and when didn't he know it)?

Molly Ivins and others tried unsuccessfully to warn America that Bush was fundamentally dishonest, lacking in character and intellectually challenged. I'm not sure whether I'm more disappointed in the lying scumbag himself or the Americans who elected him to the highest office in the land, not once, but twice.

  • @toadfoot

I'm not sure whether I'm more disappointed in the lying scumbag himself or the Americans who elected him to the highest office in the land, not once, but twice.

I know exactly where I stand on that question. It's the latter, for sure.

  • re: toadfoot

I'm more disappointed, and frankly sickened, by the american people. His character was well known prior to the 2000 election, but he was celebrated for it. 2004 was even more inexcusable. I have to say, though I'm shocked that he's turned out to be far worse than anyone could have imagined. I expect very bad. I didn't expect bad of epic proportions. What frightens me is that the entire field of Republicans running for President don't seem much better, and I worry the american people might not be mart enough to avoid a further disaster.

As far as Iran goes...what we're hearing is alot of "Why I otta..." There's not a damn thing he can do now and he knows it. He's blowing smoke in a pathetic attempt to save face and not appear impotent. Its too late for that. He should just slink away and occupy himself light the White House Christmas tree and meeting with Boy Scout troops untill he leaves office.

  • He Can Still Do What He Wants

He is George Whore Bush, I've been calling him this since the primaries of 2000! He has been exactly the type of president I described and was poo-poohed about lo those years ago.

He and Cheney can still have planes bomb Iran. He has members of the military who are loyal to him and his neocon ideology. Congress hasn't the balls to do anything about it. Nancy Pelosi will be there kissing his ass as usual. Harry Reid will be afraid of rocking the sinking boat and the Dems will be worried about losing campaign financing from the war profiteers.

It ain't over until he and Cheney are rotting in a cell in Germany, and that's never going to happen if Joe Lieberman and the thought police have their way.

  • rhetoric and action

Forget what Bush says. Who is going to do anything - anything at all - to stop us from invading Iran?

Senators? Generals? Soldiers? Is that what it's going to have to come to - more soldiers refusing to deploy, pilots refusing to fly?

This is what we, as a country, have been reduced to: hoping for the military to save us from ourselves.
