Hillary Clinton is like buttah.
On the cultural relevancy front, this seems more like a response to Huckabee's Chuck Norris endorsement.
As listening to the defenders of the candidates themselves.
Why didn't she just get Lannie Kazan? Who the hell cares about Barbra Streisand anymore?
Will John Edwards start dragging Cher around now?
You know, just because a bunch of guys don't think Barbra Streisand is hot any more...
Women vote too, in case you guys have forgotten that simple fact.
Ask the women you know who they are going to vote for. Go ahead. You may be surprised.
Have you noticed that the celebrity endorsements have largely split by age with the over 55's strongly toward Clinton and the under 55's strongly for Obama?
I feel like Oprah's endorsement is worth a few million votes. Also, Oprah has a huge following among (i.e. influence over) southern white women. That is interesting. Someone should stand outside of a wal-mart in Macon, Georgia and ask the white ladies who they'll be voting for. I think the responses would be surprising. Oprah can't deliver an election, but her audience represents a nice bundle of votes. I don't see Barbara S., or any other celebrity at this moment, being able to do that.
To the argument that Hillary is unelectable because she will motivate Republicans to get out and vote, Barbara Streisand is NOT going to help.
Not to be disparaging against an endorsement from Barbara Streisand but I am with the others what group could she possibly influence (this is an honest question on my part) and I am not certain that Ms Streisand will be joining Hillary Clinton on the campaign trail anyway (I mean has Mrs Clintons campaign announced that Barbara will be stumping for her?).
Theres a big difference between endorsing someone and then getting out there and actively campaigning for them. Can we have some real reporting on this election cycle and not this tabloidish drek (yes, i used drek)?
If you folks don't think Barbra will draw a huge crowd if she campaigns for Hillary than just wait and see, wait and see. I like Oprah, but I love Streisand. And as for her turning off white guys, well, most of them would never have voted for Hillary anyway. Streisand would only be a negative if she fails to note her true background. After all, she wasn't born with a silver spoon in her mouth. She worked hard and stuck to her talent, kept her nose and her principles.
Maybe living by those values is really all BS to most Americans. We'll have to see about that, too.
My problem is that I just don't believe Hillary has any values apart from wanting power, and that frightens me. She can't pick a position and stick to it. So I'm wondering what Barbra sees that I don't?
I expect Bill to come out for one of the Republicans, but who would that be? Giuliani? He's such a tough guy on Law and Order, and so is Bill, as I've heard. I don't see him going for one of the Southern boys, though I could be surprised.
I also feel Oprah has more credibility than Barbra Streisand, and a larger, broader following. She is on TV daily and has also lived a life of achievement from a very difficult childhood. I think at one time she was in support of GWB and had Laura and he on her show. I hope she has changed her mind on them.
BTW, it is Barbra, not Barbara. Try to get the names correct when commenting. Thanks!
peace,
st john
allows a celebrity to influence their vote? Really.
The problem is that all the Dem supporters over 55 who might be interested in this wholly unsurprising endorsement are already leaning toward Hillary; it's kinda like Ghouliani endorsing Fox over Air America Radio. Not to mention, whether or not it was meant as a response to Oprah, Streisand has become a bit of a joke; it does not reflect well on Clinton if these are the big guns (i.e. the bat to Obama's fist).
The advantages for Obama with the Oprah endorsement are several:
- It's actually a bit surprising (and positive)
- She's a media star, as opposed to a media has-been, who can use her formidable media weight if desired
- She's not as cuckoo bananas as Babs
- Reaches into Clinton demos, namely blacks and older whites, especially women
Does anybody really care what celebrities think? They're just like the rest of us -- people with their own political leanings who will choose a candidate and maybe work for and vote for him/her. It's not like celebrity endows anyone with unusual political savvy or policy wisdom or profound insight into candidates... What does Oprah know about Obama that the rest of us don't know? What does Barbra know about Hillary that the rest of us don't know?
It's nice that some are willing to get involved politically but I am no more impressed by that than I am by the fact that an elderly neighbor decides to go out and join a campaign effort and stump door to door for the candidate of his choice.
That's the point of our democracy. People are supposed to be involved -- rich or poor, famous or infamous, whatever ...
I don't get why this matters at all.
Streisand says Clinton has already "transcended the dictates of what is thought to be possible for our time" and is now "ready to shatter" the "glass ceiling for all women."
Maybe Barbra needs a refresher about a black woman named Carol Moseley Braun a few years ago who ran for president as a democratic candidate.
I don't remember Barbra doing cartwheels for her then, but then again Ms. Braun wasn't the wife of Bill Clinton. I think the "glass ceiling" is a little lower for the white wife of a former president.
Barbra Streisand is a liability.
Maybe Hillary could pay back the contribution and in return Streisand could fly back to California and keep her ugly infuriating mouth shut.
