  • About fucking time

    'Nuf said.

  • Why Did Bush Veto Water Resources?

Water can be used for all kinds of stuff. Like torture.

  • this veto was all about schip

Now, when Congress passes a new version of SCHIP, Bush vetos, and Congress fails to override, Bush can point to this water bill as an example of a truly bipartisan, but in his view misguided, bill. SCHIP, by comparison, will be painted as a partisan concoction of the Dems.

  • Let's see

It took them 7 years to finally override his veto and THIS is the bill they do it on.

And they consider themselves relevant HOW exactly???

  • Georgie Peorgie

Didn't get his way. Christ, the flag at FOX News is probably at half-mast.

  • Thank God.

A big chunk of this money was going to Louisiana to help build up its coastline. This was a crucial part of the Katrina recovery. When Bush vetoed the bill he was imposing a death sentence on southeast Louisiana. The coastline is eroding away there at a terrifying rate, and the money is earmarked to restore the wetlands and to restore New Orleans's natural hurricane protection.

That bastard. In one week he vetoes SCHIP and this bill. Anti-child, anti-wetland. I suppose if Congress passed a Kill the Baby Seals Bill he'd sign it.

  • "mchebert", you are actually pointing out...

...that Dubya is the original "compassionate conservative".

Many of us had no idea what that meant -- now we know. It specifically means being AGAINST children and wetlands, among a multitude of other things (while being FOR pre-emptive strikes against imaginary enemies, continued global warming and unrestricted executive power that would amaze absolute dictators of previous eras).

  • Planned?

I have to go with the conspiracy theorists on this one - the veto seems like a political ploy. It's an odd bill to break with Congress over, and its content is unexciting enough that it limits the news coverage to primarily the fact of the veto. The Republicans in Congress get to distance themselves from Bush to aid re-election campaigns down the line ("Of course I'm not in his pocket, I overrode his veto!"), and Bush establishes that he honestly and truly will veto a bill for solely economic concerns (to cover his behind on the SCHIP veto, since that made him look tough on children).

  • I just flushed

a turd down the toilet as relevant as Congress. Perhaps I should try to get it back so it can run for office.

  • Great.

Now hold you hands on your butt and wait till the signing statement when Bush mumbles something to the effect taht he doesn't agree with and won't follow the law. Then we'll see where that one goes...

  • A Bit of Good News

Here's something interesting that should help make up for this for President Bush:

Militant Group Is Out of Baghdad, U.S. Says

  • Halleluyah

    Finally.

  • Labels

The labels attributed to Bush are completed disconnected from his actions in office, as many comments here point out. Labels like "born again" - would the dear baby Jesus ever claim Bush a disciple? I don't know. He may forgive him, and again I don't know, but when somone is dropping turds all over the planet in his Name... well Jesus may just frown upon that.

The label "compassionate conservative", was dropped soon after becoming a "war president". But even before, he was neither compassionate nor conservative for that matter. He was, to be as specific as possible, an incompetent a-hole. Now after becoming a "war president" he has evolved into a simpleton sociopath. Such is progress for George W.

  • Well...

It's not like they've had a lot to work with. This was only his 5th veto. So it's a little disingenuous to say it took 7 years. The Republican Congress never gave him anything he didn't like.

  • Yeah, impressive.... the water resources bill

otherwise known as Everyone Loves Pork.

  • A Signing Statement

Let's see if the Fuhrer Bush will try to issue a signing statement, even though he didn't sign this bill, rewriting it his way. And then let's see if the spineless Congress lets him get away with it. They will, of course.
