  • Romney Apologizes...Sorta.

Mitt Romney, apologizing for calling Barack Obama "Osama Bin Ladin", said that he "mis-spoke and didn't know where his head was at" when he said that.

I know where his head was at...confirming my suspicion that his hair gel is actually Preparation-H.

  • See, this is why I like Obama.

I honestly don't feel that I know enough about the various Democratic candidates to know whose policies I like more. (I mean I think I'm better-informed than most but it's still not enough.)

But Obama stands out because, unlike the previous Democratic presidential candidates in my lifetime, he can (1) see in advance the glaringly obvious cheap-shot smears that will be used against him, (2) prepare for them and (3) respond quickly and decisively.

Compare to John Kerry--who should have known that someone would try and smear his military record, the strongest point he had against a War President--and who apparently waited until the smear came, and retreated to the back room to dawdle and hem and haw and go, "should we answer this? I dunno. Maybe we should. Maybe we shouldn't. Hmm. I just don't know. Hmm..."

Note to all those Democratic apparatchik geniuses who pushed for "the most electable" candidate: Rule number one in being electable is to not let the other guy walk all over you.

  • My guess

My guess is the same as when Bush repeatedly says "Democrat Congress" and such: this is an inside joke, a name they use inside and away from the public. The problem with those is that you eventually slip up and use the "nickname" when you shouldn't. Same with Maccaca too, obviously.

But I doubt he did it intentionally. Obama is not the nominee and is not likely to be. The damage to Romney for doing this is larger than the benefit. If this was said in a general election between the two, I'd have a different opinion.

  • Do bears shit in the woods?

Swift Boatting will be child's play when this next election cycle gets parried down to the one-on-one debacle of whom ever is "lucky" enough to "win" their respective party's nomination for president. John L Sullivan wouldn't be able to handle the haymakers that'll be thrown when that sorry debate begins. Poor, poor America.

Who the hell would want to place themselves into that foray? Only someone dedicated to their own sullied hubris and egocentric self could possibly want the job and what it'll take to win it. I'm going to purchase a pair of good headphones and some soothing music. The last thing I need now is more fluid leaking into my mouth at the sound of the lies that'll be tossed around like down feathers in a pillow fight. Maybe the electorate can use some of the feathers with a bit of tar and...

  • @ VONDO

I agree with your points, but, I see Romney's usage as somewhere between a "Macaca Moment", i.e., an intentional ethnic slur and a don't-give-a-crap-about-an-opponent that permeates the entire Republican alimentary canal of thought.

Either way, I find it useful to point out to others that the Republicans despise anyone who isn't white, born-again or heterosexual; Mr. Romney's thinly-disguised commentary is about par for the course for his ilk.

  • Battle of Rhyme

It's sooo hard to keep rhyming words straight. You say Obama, I say Osama; You say Mitt, I say Shit!

  • Of course it was deliberate.

Does anyone think Willard (Mittens) Romney draws an unscripted breath, even during his deepest sleep?

There has been too much Obama/Osama nonsense emanating from the Republicans and their adherents to even think about this being "unintentional" in any way. Willard Romney simply went about it, as is his nature, in a very clumsy and transparent way.

The man is possibly the only more calculating simulation of a human being in public life than the reptilian Norman (Quimby) Coleman, who oozed into the Senate on the occasion of the tragic death - five years ago today - of the great Paul Wellstone.

What we know about both is that first, no memorials will be built to Norman Coleman. No camps, no schools, no community centers will ever be named for him. His name will, in future years, be an embarrassing afterthought for the state of Minnesota. And the robotic Willard Romney will soon be a footnote in his own right in American history. In the unlikely event there would ever be a Willard Romney memorial, I might suggest the ideal material - Plexiglas. Easily seen through, 100% synthetic, and because it does not wear or age well, not nearly as useful as the genuine article.

  • it seems to me

when I read the quotes it seemed to me like Romney actually though that it was Democratic candidate Obama who said those things about the Iraq insurgents, not Osama bin Laden. And it was part of the usual political attack machine.

it does help to show what an empty headed doofus Romney is. I can't imagine he would ever really be elected president. He's too shifty.

  • WTF?

“I have no doubt there will be some of that — trying to make me into this foreign, odd, clearly black person and to scare people,” he said.

Trying to make him into a clearly black person is Swift-boating him?

I may as well be the first to Swift-boat Obama in that case: “HEY, OBAMA! YOU’RE ODD, AND YOU’RE CLEARLY BLACK! YOU ARE, YOU ARE, YOU ARE!”

Now let’s see what you got. Go ahead. Demolish me.

  • Funny how often those Republicans "misspeak"

This sounds like the case of Dick Armey of Texas (R-Naturally) who referred to Rep. Barney Frank as "Barney Fag," and then later said he misspoke. Dick Armey is, of course, the guy who was once photographed on a fishing trip kissing a fish he had just caught.

Now, I wonder what would happen if somebody were to refer to the former governor of Massachusetts as "Governor Rommel."

  • Gore's Oscar

For once and all, Al Gore did not win an Academy Award. The Oscar in the Documentary category is awarded to the film's director, in this case Davis Guggenheim.

  • AL GORE FOR THE SUPREME COURT!

The ultimate in poetic justice. 'Nuff said.

  • Misspeaking

Considering that the Republicans have been purposefully calling the Democratic party the "Democrat" party for decades as slur (there is no doubt about this, as it goes back even before McCarthy, and if you don't believe it is on purpose, you need to listen to any interviews with major Republicans - or Rush Limbaugh, for that matter), and whenever called on it, say they misspoke, I say don't give them the benefit of the doubt. Whenever a Republican does something like what Romney did, don't give them the benefit of the doubt. Whether it was a mistake or no, treat it as purposeful. Not only is this more likely to be the case, it helps to frame the Republicans as petty and childish people who cannot be trusted to have the maturity to effectively wield power. Obama should treat this incident as a purposeful slur against him, and use it to beat the dickens out of Romney for it. If nothing else, do you think the other side would do anything else? If the other guy is going to fight uncivilly, perhaps it is best to fight that way, too. Better that than risking another Swift boating.
