Did Craig know that the airport men's room was a spot for gay sex? "I don't use the Internet."

  • He's admitted too much before.

Back in 1982, a reported asked him how he felt about the then-current Congressional page sex-scandal.

Craig then issued a bizarre pre-emptive denial of any involvement. He was the only member of Congress to do so.

Six months later, he proposed to one of his staffers, who already had kids from a previous marriage. Instant family.

It's almost enough to give me sympathy for the guy. Must be tough, being that afraid to really be yourself.

  • Funny but Hardly Suspicious

With all the discussion about this restroom and its "perks", it's not really suspicious that Senator Craig would have such an immediate response. I'm more concerned about the other ongoing allegations that have surrounded this gentleman for some time. For his own benefit, I'd rather he do Jim McGreevy than Ted Haggard.

  • cheap shot

Craig assumes you find out about places to have sex with other men on the internet and since he doesn't use the internet, how could he find out about a place like that?

While that may be a less than valid argument (one doesn't have to be on the internet to find those places) giving him a cheap shot like that lowers Salon to the level of Hannity or O'Reilly where they take any opening and try to prove their point by exaggerating its importance.

"A" is true so "AB" must also be true.

I'm always on the progressive side of things but let's elevate the discourse and not stoop the their level.

  • He *should* use the Internet

Lauer's comment must have been referring to reports that some sites are ranking bathrooms for gay sex, and people were well aware of the surge in arrests from that one at the airport:

He probably learned about the bathroom from those sites, and was looking for some quick relief. Of course, Craig is a strong proponent of safe and secure internet use:

  • "Matt, you won't believe this. But I don't use the Internet."

I wonder if the unedited footage of the interview has Matt saying, "OH Senator! I've seen you on Manhunt."

  • Fact or Fiction

I think that this whole story has been ridiculous: Ridiculous that police are spending their time trying to catch consenting adults having sex. Ridiculous that another "family values conservative" is really a closeted homosexual. Ridiculous that Craig won't just admit he's gay. But to claim that he's never used the internet, that's going a bit far, even for this story. Craig's own website has this little gem: "As a fellow traveler on the web, I hope you will let me know about other interesting Idaho sites."

Hopefully this little ordeal will limit the Republicans from using homophobia as an election issue, but you can't help feeling sorry for a man who is reduced to denying ever using the internet as his defense.

  • No Sympathy for the Devil

There ARE conservatives out there who have the courage to be open about their homosexual orientation; they are called Log Cabin Republicans.

Larry Craig has always had the option to come out of the closet and make a righteous case for himself to his constituents. Instead, he stays in denial to the point of absurdity.

Think I'll save my sympathy for someone else...

  • Doesn't have a computer?

How can he not use a computer during his work? Every job that uses a desk requires a computer. Does he actually even have a job? Don't Senators have to do something? It should not be acceptable for Congress people (or a president) to not use a computer - if they're going to write laws for the modern world, they should have to be in the modern world.

  • Get over it

I wish everybody would just leave the poor guy alone, about this. Propositioning someone of the same sex in a bathroom shouldn't be any more of a crime than propositioning someone of either sex, in a bar. He didn't offer money, nor did he try to force anything, as far as we've heard. He just put out "feelers", that could have been ignored.

Pick on him for his Senate votes, and his stances on public policy. Accept that he is a hypocrit (but show me a Republican who isn't, when it comes to sexuality) - but the piling on by the Republicans is also hypocritical. They've known about him for years; what they object to is his getting caught.

Can we turn our attention to the real obscenities going on in Washington - like the Democrats' enthusiasm for trashing the Constitution? They're starting to make the Republicans look like Thomas Jefferson, the way they are so willing to override our civil liberties in the name of keeping us "safe" - or at least not being accused of neglecting our "safety".

  • I would be very surprised

if someone -- his lawyers, colleagues, wife -- has not said something to Craig about the Internet, if they have ever asked him about how he happened to be in that bathroom. So this doesn't seem like a "gotcha" moment to me.

  • Wasn't that a Columbo episode?

"We said she was killed, Senator... nobody said she was strangled... and the only way somone would know that, Senator..."

Isn't it funny how every time a Republican is caught with his pants down (literally as often as figuratively, these days) we get some concern troll (anonymous, of course) telling us how we shouldn't "lower ourselves" to the levels of the Repukes and their millionaire media mouthpieces?

No, of course not, we should remain pure, unsullied... and go back to losing elections.

Fuck that, and fuck anyone who thinks it's anything but appropriate -- and necessary -- to tell the truth about the lying, hypocritical scum who have been stealing our country from us; stealing our wealth; destroying our security; turning us against one another; killing our citizens, our family and friends, and ourselves; and trying to drag us all back to the middle ages. Enough was more than enough years ago.

  • Come on, that is what politicians do.

Come on, that is what politicians do. you ask them one question and they answer another question that you didn't ask. Ergo, all politicians are gay.

He probably was advised, and rightly so, that if you admit knowledge, you are percieved as guilty, and if you deny knowledge, you are percieved as guilty.

A bit more sophisticated than "Senator, have you stopped beating your wife yet?"

The correct response would have been, "No Matt, I did not know about that. Would you tell me how you know that to be true? Was this information published somewhere or did you do an investigation on your own to find out? What are your sources for this claim and where is your evidence to back up this claim?"

In all my years of using public toilets, I have never seen or heard any sexual activity whatsoever in any of them, ever.

I think people are fantasizing about this more than it is happening.

Why is Matt so interested in the subject anyway? Why is the whole damn country fascinated with gay toilet sex fantasies?

Or is it just the news media?

    And politicians?

We need a witchhunt to find out!
