  • know-nothingness

Fred Thompson doesn't seem to know anything about the issues, so I guess this was just a great opportunity to show of expertise in something. Why not be an expert in hypocrisy? It's such a widespread phenomenon.

  • Yeah, right...

Coming from the party, and the ideological far right, who tried to trash MoveOn without addressing the actual content or message of the offending ad, this charge is pure hypocricy. And yet another cowardly diversion on their own part.

If Fred Thompson can't stand up to religious extremists at home, how can we expect him to stand up to them abroad?

  • "I understand there's a front page ad that's been taken out by this outfit called MoveOn.org

they send these emails out to people from those contraptions of theirs.

I know he's trying for that down home good ole boy thing, but to me, he just sounds stupid.

  • I think that's a great question to ask Betrayus.

I think he should be asked it today, or better yet, on Hardball, or by Olberman, or by Wolf-boy.

  • Rush was talking about MacBeth

    And everyone knows it.

Moveon was talking about General Petraeus and everyone knows that.

Now just what part of Fred Thompson's saying Rush was right about MacBeth was hypocritical?

  • re: I think that's a great question to ask Betrayus.

    stevio

"I think he should be asked it today, or better yet, on Hardball, or by Olberman, or by Wolf-boy."

I assume you are talking about the question from the article:

"So what does Thompson have to say about Rush Limbaugh's "phony soldiers" comment? Well, this: "Congressional Democrats are trying to divert attention from insulting our military leader in Iraq and pandering to the loony left by attacking Rush Limbaugh. He is one of the strongest supporters of our troops, yet Democrats claim he is not being strong enough. I wonder who Gen. Petraeus and his troops think is most supportive."

Well I am still in the military - and I cannot speak for others, and I will not attempt to do so here, but frankly, I find Rush FAR more supportive of the military than Moveon.

  • hypocrisy stories miss obvious point

The whole "hypocrisy" angle seems to begin with the absurd suggestion that partisan politicians are aiming for some kind of philosophical consistency. They're not. It is entirely about loyalty and group cohesion. Rush is Thompson's man (or vice versa) and can therefore do no wrong. MoveOn is the "enemy" and can therefore do no right.

I mean, OK, bang the drum on hypocrisy. Bang the drum on anything that means Republicans are scumbags, because to a fair approximation they are, and an obvious message repeated like a drone seems to beat a clever formulation any day.

But there is something ineffectual about this whole gotcha game. It's like pointing out that the school bully used a split infinitive--and not as a conscious stylistic preference, but because most likely he doesn't even know what an infinitive is. It would be far preferable to come up with an effective plan to keep the school bully from taking your lunch money every day.

  • @anon

Yeah you're right, Limbaugh is the victim here. Also WMD's were in Iraq, Saddam was responsible for 9/11, oh and the tooth fairy is real too.

  • If you want to be president, it helps if you talk like an illiterate hillbilly

There's this here "outfit" a-tryin' ta bushwhack our he-rows.

I say we ride out an' string 'em up! C'mon boys, let's git them thar varmits.

Plays well out west. You know, out west? As in, "Thars a ol' poster out west, says Wanted Dead or alive."

If you want to be presnit, you gotta talk like a simpleton.

"Yeah you're right, Limbaugh is the victim here. Also WMD's were in Iraq, Saddam was responsible for 9/11, oh and the tooth fairy is real too."

Careful...WMDs WERE found in Iraq...remember the SARIN gas missles? Don't care WHERE they came from, they were found in Iraq when we were assured they weren't there.

    Saddam responsible for 9/11? Don't know, don't care...irrelevant.

My kid thinks the toothfairy is real...and as long as she's a kid, I won't contradict her.

BTW, I am in the military and I still want RUSH on the military radio. Of course, the majority doesn't necessarily win in the military...so it depends on what the Pentagon says.

  • Walking And Talking Like a Duck

Doesn't necessarily mean you're a viable presidential candidate. Any boob can function as a soulless echo chamber, just watch 5 minutes of Tucker Carlson to understand what I mean by this. But because of Thompson's casual hypocrisy in this utterly overblown sideshow lays bare the fact that he's not mentally invested in making this country a better place. He does not ask others to let him guide them through these bleak times with his indelible presidential-like leadership, he does not rise above the base pandering fray the way a true leader would. Instead, we're given mealy and utterly worthless sound bites whose sole intention is to provide his "campaign" another blip in the daily Media cycle.

Let's put it this way. If he didn't follow the daily RNC talking point of the day, would we even be talking about this pretender? Would there be any outrage for those who care to be bothered by this?

  • Drop it

I've been reading/hearing/seeing this "phoney soldier" thing for several days now, mixed with the MoveOn stuff, and I've just about had it.

MoveOn was right on substance, wrong on one detail ("BetrayUs"). Rush is wrong on substance, and right (in my opinion) about one detail. And we Democrats manage to look like idiots on both counts.

I went to the MediaMatters website, and the "phony soldiers" quote was two off-hand words in a long go-round with a caller. Read in context, it's entirely plausible that Rush was talking about the one YouTube fake soldier, although (thankfully) I don't know what's in Rush's heart.

We look like patsies because a bunch of Democrats signed on to the anti-MoveOn thing, and we look like harpies because no Republicans signed on to the anti-Rush thing.

Just drop it, and get back to arguing the facts.

  • Anonymous

I have my doubts that you are actually in the military, but if you are and really think Rush (draft dodger) is more supportive of the military you truly are sadly misinformed and just not too bright.

  • No hypocrisy in the republican mind

If you put this MoveOn and Limbaugh thing in the context of the Republican mindset, there is no hypocrisy. Let's look at this logically starting with some Republican Party axioms:

    Axiom 1: Soldiers are patriots.

Axiom 2: Patriots support the Republicans.

Axiom 3: Republicans support the war in Iraq.

Corollary: Soldiers support the war in Iraq.

Therefore, any soldier who does not support the war in Iraq is not a "real" soldier. They are phony soldiers. Q.E.D.

So there you have it. A sound proof in Republican Party logic.
