Why is the House checking up on Blackwater? A Republican says Democrats hate all companies that make a profit.
The letters thread is now closed.
  • Isn't there some sort of minimum age requirement for representatives?

Because it sounds like Westmorland is about 12.

  • A Profit??? Is Blackwater About Profit or About Security?

The train wreck subtlety of Republicans continues to amaze.

No one paying a smidgeon of attention to this fiasco of a war is surprised by the Congressman's comment. That he would place it on the record and by it, infer a juxtaposition with patriotism makes me want to scream.

What in the HELL, Congressman? On the backs of dead American soldiers and innocent Iraqi civilians you impugn the integrity of those who question Blackwater's role? For a dollar?

Stand away from me, Congressman. Stand well off. I can't think of a kind word for the filth you suggested this morning.

  • "There is a party in Congress that doesn't like companies that make a profit."

I hope a Democratic congressman that has the balls to tell Prince he's testifying before Congress because there's a party that loves comapnies who profit off of the blood of Americans.

  • no, actually...

..we just don't like companies that rip us off, behave like rogues, and do it with your blessing, because of all the campaign money they spread around.

Can we just take the entire GOP membership in congress, put them on a plane, and render them to, oh, I dunno, how about Egypt? I hear the accomodations are about what they deserve.

  • Unintended consequences....

I wouldn't be surprised if the outcome from these hearings will be Repug bills legalizing mercenary companies as bona fide "armies" and seeking regulations to make them a potential (and potent!) tool of foreign policy.

  • Making a profit

    from American Tax Dollars?

From New Orleans to Baghdad, Blackwater has certainly been a money maker for a lot of lucky people...

and murder for people who tied their convoys up in traffic.

  • You got it wrong

No, sir. There's a party in Congress that likes to think that the average American can make a decent living and that the average American's tax money will not be wasted on war profiteers and political hacks.

  • Hey... it worked before

The ad has been a wonderful distraction so far. I'm still not sure exactly what Petraeus said during his presentation to Congress. It would be nice to have a "While you were watching the ad..." article about things that happened while the entire world was either attacking or defending Move On. What is really scary is that we were distracted so easily, even knowing the stakes, even knowing how the right wing media works to distract from their major faults by blowing up minor weaknesses of their opponents.

The only proper response when Move On is mentioned is "Yes, I agree that the ad was tasteless, but there is a war going on that is far more important. Could we talk about Petraeus's testimony?" The proper response to the "party doesn't like to make a profit" comment is "We're here to discuss whether Blackwater employees have acted irresponsibly, damaging U.S. interests in Iraq. Could we please leave the political posturing on the table?"

  • Huh????

So, am I supposed to understand from this desperate piece of Congressional blather that General David Petraeus is a company that makes money????????

This is more logic from the people who think the way to stop Saudi Arabian terrorists from striking the United States is to invade Iraq.

  • Westmoreland?

Wasn't this name involved somewhere else in are war situation? Any relation madam?

  • The ultimate neocon organization

Just think about it: Blackwater operates free of military oversight, while conveniently pursuing the Administration's goals ("Who will rid me of this meddlesome Islamofascist?"), does not require the post-war medical care granted to actual soldiers, and all they cost is taxpayer money, which as an added bonus gets funneled directly to the CEOs of the War Business. What's not to like?

  • Profiteer

I think this Westmoreland person got terms "make a profit" and "profiteer" confused. She meant that the Democrats aren't fond of companies that profiteer. I'm sure she'll claify.

  • I probably already know the answer to this but

did Republican Rep. Lynn Westmoreland vote to not fund the expansion for Health care Benefits for poor childeren? What congressional district has that many individuals who think the way this idiot does? I find it hard to believe that there is a mass of that many meanspirited peple clumped together with that barren a mind set. Is this congressperson a woman? Does she have children? I'm really glad I was not raised by her.

  • This is the same numbskull...

...who let Colbert interview him and made a complete fool of himself.

He was 1 of 2 congressman who did not introduce a single piece of legislation. The only legislation he wanted to talk about was some nonsense about mandating that the 10 commandments be put into court houses. And then he could only tell Stephen what 1 or 2 of the 10 commandments were - basically did not know what they were after pontificating about how important they are.

We have really done our country proud with it's elected officials.

  • Just found out Westmoreland is a guy.

I'm still glad he wasn't one of my parents. What a cynical ass hole.

  • Yeah, that's right

Nothing bugs me more than when a company makes a profit. Whether the business concerns making safety products for infants or kills hundreds of Iraqis, it's all the same to me. If they are making profit, they are EVIL.

Jesus! As someone pointed out, this guy sounds about 12: "You guys are all just jealous and stuff about how awesome I am!" You can almost hear the high pitched whiny voice. How does someone like this get elected?

  • Quote of the Day - Rep. Lynn Westmoreland

Yes, there is something wrong with making a profit on war. Why have so many people forgotten that?

  • Who doesn't love a profit?

Now that I know there is a party that loves companies that make a profit, I am waiting patiently for Westmoreland to chastize the recent criticisms of Chinese toys covered in lead paint. I mean the health of people, whether they be Iraqis or our children, doesn't matter as long as it is done in the interest of profit right?

Pass me some more anti-freeze toothpaste please.

  • What happened to laws prohibiting carpet baggers?

I am seething with rage that Americans are allowing companies to make profits on a bloody war, on the slaughter of many and sickened that corrupt elected officials are doing it with American taxpayers' money. Then, the gall of these Republicans to call it a business enterprise. How baldfaced must these defenders be till we shout at them in righteous anger? These bloody companies should be cut to the quick!
