A Republican representative tries to change the subject.

  • We are very, very close to becoming

a failed Republic that is following the same road and will end-up not unlike what happened in Germany in the 30's. Be afraid. Be very afraid. Hearing those GOP clowns "changing the subject" sent chills down my spine. It will bring them high accolades from the Cheney led neocons. Weak opposition from those who were in position to do more to stop the Nazis is legend in historical accounts in the mea culpas of the Germans who initally tried to stop Hitler from gaining control of Germany. The present Democratic leadership just doesn't have the intestinal fortitude to stop the meanspiritedness leading to the decline of this country as it slips into the dispair that lead to Hitler's reign of terror. Don't think for a moment that any of this is missed by Cheney and Bush. They are reveling in it. The only difference is that the Nazi power grab had to do with ideology. These creeps are in it for want of money, lots and lots of money. Democracy for the Middle East? Come on. Buckle up. Iran is next on the menu and if I lived in Syria, I'd be looking for a new haunt...

  • Impeach the MoveOn Ad!

Remember when it killed all those civilians in Iraq? Unspeakable! And conducted torture at Abu Ghraib prison? It's out of control! And lied about WMDs, then botched the post-war occupation? Outrageous!

If the Democrats are really serious, they would immediately start hearings to impeach the MoveOn ad, which has so clearly betrayed the principles it was elected to uphold.

  • Outrageous!

Say what you want about Gen. Petraeus, but when you attack our brave mercenaries, you're attacking one of the things that has made America great over the last six years and nine months, namely the God-given right of a Republican-owned corporation to suck at the public teat. And that my friends, tears the blanket.

I mean c'mon, haven't we learned by now? Now let's get with the program, we got kids keep from getting health insurance, illegal aliens to round up, and gays to keep from getting married. You know, important stuff.

  • Beyond contempt

These people are beyond contempt. How stupid do they think we are? Pay attention to the agenda, Republicans, and participate in the hearing you are attending. MoveOn's ad is old news. Blackwater is today's subject. The two have nothing whatsoever to do with each other, nothing, nothing, nothing, and I can't imagine there are very many Americans, in either party, who can intellectually conflate a private Mercenary army with our troops who are paid much less to do much more under much less favorable circumstances, and who are accountable for what they do, not above and beyond the law.

  • MoveOn....

made a public relations blunder of massive proportions when it ran that ad.

Even though the basic content of the ad was accurate the headline was a sophomoric mistake -- here we are, almost a MONTH after the ad ran, and the Repugs are still foaming at the mouth over it!

    When will we ever learn?

  • I'm tired of bread and circuses

    really, really tired.

Could we please have some government now?

  • Did anyone....

in congress point out that it is (I am serious here) very insulting to the US millitary personell to equate them with mercs? The hearing was about Blackwater, they are people that fight and kill for money. That's yery different from some kid that wants to serve his/her country.

  • I suspect the MoveOn ad will be major part of the 2008 campaign.

After all, when you have nothing, nothing is what you lead with. That's why everytime there is new republican scandal the shouts go up, "Bill Clinton! Barney Franks! Sandy Berger's pants!" even though some of these go back a decade or more. They really don't have anything new to point to that they've actually done right in the last 6 years so they will gather around the latest pinata and keep whacking it long after all the candy is gone.

  • Mercenaries? They act like it, but are they?

www.ohchr.org/english/law/protocol1.htm -- Protocol Additional to the Geneva Conventions of 12 August 1949, and relating to the Protection of Victims of International Armed Conflicts (Protocol 1)

Unless these protocols have been amended or changed, it appears that Blackwater "contractors" cannot be legally deemed mercenaries...they are lawless, immoral, ruthless, greedy, and brutal, but....

    Scroll down to Article 47...

  • Recipe for disaster

I'm loving the comments thus far.

stevio, have you read Naomi Wolf's The End of America? Haven't read it yet, but from what I've heard, it's some scary stuff.

Yes, how dare we impugn the character of our mercs! I hadn't realized the extent to which our military had been outsourced to private contractors. This scares the crap out of me. Some of these mercenaries used to be in the army. Perhaps some others didn't make the cut. Who are these people? I suspect a disproportionate number of them are people who, due to circumstances or temperment, were not a good fit for the armed services.

So we give them guns, no real rules and no accountability. This is a recipe for disaster.

  • Waxman doesn't get it.

Waxman should have just laughed until that buffoon sat down and then thank the honourable senator for his clowning and then suggest that we get onto the serious business at hand rather than play who is the biggest jakckass.

The democrats treat these people with kid gloves and respect while they piss all over them.

Waxman doesn't get it, congress is a joke. The only way for congress not to be a joke is for the democrats to realize it and do something about it. Laughter IS appropriate.

Everytime that jackass brays, it should be met with a chorus of laughter from every democrat in the room. They could bray right back at him. Any of them have whoopee cushions?

C-SPAN ratings would go through the roof.

  • Listen Up

I am highly disturbed by Rep. Issa's attempt to disrupt Congress's oversight of Blackwater's role in Iraq (and elsewhere). If he cannot bear to avoid attacking an advertisement, I would at least appreciate his focused attention on how much money is being (mis)spent on their "activities", if only as a sign that (some) Republicans might actually show that they are stewards of Americans' hard-earned tax dollars.

    Fiscal responsibility? Integrity? Patriotism?

    Sit down, Congressman, and listen.
