Losing ground on Iraq?

How a Senate withdrawal measure went from 52-47 to 47-47.

The letters thread is now closed.

What no red star

What, did I not say something catty about Hillary Clinton. What with dissing her is all the rage while you're doing it it is a con you fell for.

Oh no I got it. I didn't kiss Camile Paglia's ass. You know she is soooo liberal and smart, even though she is everything that is wrong with the liberal movement; a self centered smug ugly bitch who gets her rocks off telling people how stupid they are compared to her.

You want Dems to defeat the GOP? Start by killing off Camille Paglia.

I'm willing to bet I'm not alone at this.

GUTLESS, STUPID, or INCOMPETENT?

If it is incompetence, it rivals the Bush Admin and Katrina.

Its Time to Make the Repugs Feel Some Pain

I agree that the Repugs should be made to filibuster every time they threaten it. Keep sessions open through the weekends and holidays. I don't care if it never closes.

Put up bills to cut funding for the WAR (not the troops, like the media mindlessly quotes from GOP talking points) and make them vote no. And if it passes, make Bush veto it. Again and again.

It's time to show beyond a doubt who is for and who is against this war. And then crush them with it in '08.

I gave $100 to MoveOn and told them I would give them another $100 when they ran another ad like Betrayus. The Senate may not like personal attacks, but this and many other issues have been personal for me for a long time.

I always wanted to be a Senator

Now, watching this Congress I pretty much have my wish. You see, I often spend time wishing our country would end its occupation of Iraq and bring our troops home. Sometimes I even want everyone would be more civil and not say nasty things in full page ads. I wish we could all get along. I wish I could teach the world to sing and give everyone a pony.

Watching what passes for the Legislative Branch of our free and democratic government consigned to do nothing more than wishing the tears and bad people away. I know exactly how it feels to be a US Senator: completely without any power, and even less relevance.

Now if I could just get my hands on their health care and pension plans.

It's Harry Reid, Stupid

I am starting to get the very real impression that Harry Reid is hopelessly outmatched in the Senate. I know that if you don't have the votes, you don't have the votes, but I can't for the life of me see Daschle or Mitchell getting consistantly outplayed.

Losing their minds is more like it

When will the Democrats learn that NOTHING they do will stop the Republicans from doing everything in their power to smear Democrats as "anti-troops", "soft on terrorists", "anti-military..." Haven't we learned ANYTHING in the last few elections? Who cares what the Republicans do? If Democrats stopped pussyfooting around them and reacting to every little thing, they would show themselves to be the crass and hypocritical deceivers that they are.

It doesn't matter what you do, Democrats. You will have to fight smear tactics with strategy and intelligent, compelling vision for the future. JUST FOR GOD'S SAKE DO WHAT'S RIGHT and stop assuming it even matters what the Republicans say. It doesn't matter. The people are the voters, and the people are not Republican political strategists; they are the citizens of the United States who expect to be represented by those whom they elect. Repesent us. It's very clear what the people want.

Must be a Mistake

The Senate moving? That sleeping bunch of good for nothings - moving, back or fore, you must be kidding.

Dodd-damn disappointed

I'm all for standing on principle, but CD could've voted for this, then voted for a tougher bill later. Dems have to stick together, this internal strife is playing right into Bush's hands.

The basic political problem

...is that if Democrats vote to pull out, then they'll be blamed for 'losing' the war and moderate and conservative Democrats will lose seats.

It isn't enough that the public now wants an end to this war. Once the war is ended, the Republicans will be free of the Iraqi millstone around their necks and we'll right back to the same old dumb conservative arguments: that America needs to show 'strength' and that our enemies will attack us if we ever show 'weakness.'

There needs to be an alternative ideology to the 'strength' doctrine. For instance it needs to be stated to the public that we should treat terrorism as a criminal activity, not as a state activity. It should be pointed out that the terrorists attacked not because we were weak, but in fact because we are strong. This is important, because as soon as we pull out of Iraq, Osama bin Laden and his friend will no doubt move heaven and earth to attack us again, so as to pull right back into the Middle East.

What we really have here is a failure of leadership and of vision. The reason the Democrats can't get off their dime is because we simply don't have a clearly articulated vision of what comes next.

I though I heard, on NPR,this morning, that...

Reid was going to keep introducing legislation to end the war over and over to embarass the Republicans - I missed most of the piece (yelling 3 year old) - Anyone else hear this?

re: Make them actually filibuster already!

Amen to that.

Democrats, what are you waiting for??? The public in behind you--the majority wants us out of Iraq, the sooner the better. They voted for you in the mid-terms to make this happen. You've got majorities in the House and Senate. You've got a lame duck Republican president.

Yet you continue to bend over backwards to placate the Republican-defined middle ground. Which, due to your constant capitulations, is now pretty far to the right.

Is this some sort of learned helplessness? Too scared to even try anymore? Get over it! Lives are at stake. The American People are counting on you! Fight!

I guess the Republicans are right--Democrats are the party of surrender. Surrender to the Republican Party.

Thank you, Tim--

Nobody else seems to have picked up on the fact that we have now lost Democratic support to end the war. This is a serious blow. Thank you for paying attention.
