Tony Snow's greatest hits.
The letters thread is now closed.
  • It's been a joy watching him mock you, give you the verbal "finger," lie to your face etc.

So long Tony, you son of a bitch.

While there are those more generous than I who think it's all just a game, the frat-boy "sparring" between the criminal liars in the White House and the ass-licking, contemptible cowards of the so-called "free press," I am personally outraged and offended by everything you did.

Tony, real American men and women suffered and died because of your boss's actions and your lies. This wasn't some goddamned game.

Now you've got cancer and you are going to suffer and die with it.

Good! I hope it takes you slow and painful.

    Drop dead you bastard.

  • Greatest hits, indeed

You know what would be a really useful history book for high-schoolers? One that has a whole chapter listing Bush's lies and dry-drunk attempts to speak in general, and a whole chapter listing Tony Snow's contemptuous spitting at all of America.

Kids need to learn just how close our precious democracy has managed to come to fascism.

And make a version put to music the kids can listen to on their headphones, too, just in case they don't really want to read or something.

  • It's not "sparring"

And we have a perfectly good word for it in English - we call it "lying".

  • Snow jobs no more

In an organization of contemptible people, Tony Snow managed to make himself stand out. That speaks volumes to me.

He was just awful. Cocky, uninformative, and often clueless,a perfect spokesman for the administration.

  • just desserts

Yes, I do think he deserves a long slow death, a sort of Lee Atwater demise. I'm not saying I wish that for him--that would not be worthy of me, of course, but he deserves it.

  • The press deserves these answers

I'd say his short and manipulative answers are more an indication of the failures of the press, than Tony Snow's personal failings. The press, in their weasley way, frame questions and seek out answers that are "press worthy." They then reframe the answers and tilt the truth with bold headlines. Sometimes this works to the advantage of the administration, sometimes to the detriment. By the time Snow got there, the press was "against" the administration and were looking for a fight. Snow recognized that they were not the tough guys they were purporting to be, and treated them like the little bitches they actually were. Notice his general lack of fear.

When a person can turn a phrase like:

"It’s working. We’re just years too late in changing our tactics,” she said. “We can’t ever let that happen again. We can’t be fighting the last war. We have to keep preparing to fight the new war."

and it doesn't end up in the press as:

    "Hillary on Surge? ‘It’s Working’…"

Then I'll side with the press over those who would try to control the discourse.

  • When Lee Atwater went down

He took a look around. When faced with the blackness of the great unknown coming toward him like an irresistible specter, he added up his whole life and his contribution to his fellow human beings and he was ashamed.

He thought about all the lies, about the innocent family members of people in public life he tried to ruin so that his boss could win an election. He was a dirty trickster and never thought twice that the things that he did. Until he saw his reflection and what a sad, sad end was coming his way.

He didn't feel sorry for himself. He felt sorry for the people he smeared and wounded in life.

And, in the end, he admitted it, he was sincerely sorry, and he asked forgiveness.

Tony Snow, on the other hand, sat weeping in front of David Gregory in a revealing interview about his cancer and he expressed awe at how his family loved him and how hard it was for him to face this disease and blah blah blah.

Well Tony, when the death count for American soldiers hit 2,500 you were asked for a comment and you said, "It's just a number." Remember that Tony?

Remember when someone asked you this summer how soldiers were going to bear up doing patrols in Iraq in 120 degree heat and you shrugged something like, "they expect that. It's what they are trained for."

Well Tony Baloney, when you go, you'll just be another number. You're suffering? Well, you should expect it.

Try to be like Lee Atwater. Try to tell the truth before you die. It might even save your soul if you have one.

  • I've enjoyed watching him Sparring

Why is sparring necessary? Shouldn't the point be to provide information in response to a legitimate question? Wouldn't the official policy of "sparring" indicate a desire to hide, obfuscate, cloud, spin and outright lie in response to that question? If all the above was not the goal, then what is the need for the combative tone?

The most amazing thing is this was all done with a press that proved over and over again their complete willingness to uncritically run any piece of crap the White House uttered. Even given that willingness, the press was forced to beat the lie out of them every single time.

Maybe the press will take this opportunity to just stop showing up at the White House briefings and instead get out and talk to vets on the mend, make sure the administration is living up to promises to take care of them. Ferret out stories like the Walter Reed hospital scandal BEFORE it goes on for months and years. Dig dig dig and dig some more. Get out from behind your desks and find out what's really going on. Showing up at the White House is like going to the zoo in the hope of having a monkey fling feces at you. What is the point of that?
