Hey, at least he didn't call it "America Junior"

Barack Obama and "the president of Canada."

The letters thread is now closed.

Proof positive?

I doubt that. It's a mis-used word in an impromptu debate. Yes, I would expect better from the President, but you make an honest mistake like that, you acknowledge the mistake, apologize for it, and move on. I think the larger issue he presented is correct. NAFTA does nothing but screw US workers out of jobs. Focus on THAT, Tim, not the minutia of a wrong word.

We have Fox for that.

Proof positive?

I meant that sarcastically. Sorry if it didn't come off that way.

Ya know...

Give me and Obama a break. Prime Minister/President/King/Queen, whatever. Bush has mangled names, dates, countries and, most importantly, friggin wars and he's in his second term as, well whatever he is called. The "liberal press" has been laughfing it off for all of this time and now all of a sudden it's friggin news worthy! So if Obama or anyone slips while making a point that he willing, if elected, to try to correct the plethora of debacles Bush created over the past two terms well that's what the "liberal press" should be fixed-on. For Christ's sake what do you people want? Someone actually thinking about ways to fix this stuff, or someone who doesn't forget someone's title but is in the pockets of Big Business, the Drug Companies, and the Haliburton's of the world?

After having to listen to Bush for almost seven years I'd take the former. This crap is nauseating...

Canadas president?

Bushits butt kisser Stephen Harper would like nothing better than to be president. Unfortunately there is atill a Queen to contend with and polls around 30 %. Hope is faint.

Tim:

Thanks for clearing that up! You can..ya know...disregard what I said.

Sarcasm not translating

Tim, you'll have to forgive the many of us who didn't hear the sarcasm. What with all the petty and condescending Salon writers' rips on Obama liberally applied throughout this site, most of us who are in true fear for the future of this country are getting pretty sensitive about it. (See poster AncientAssyrian's catalog of Salon Obamabombs in response to the Joan Walsh pounce on the so-terribly-important Barry Bonds "issue.")

No biggie Tim, but...

...the border will disappear eventually. The idea is to compete with the European Union. Of course, whether the EuroUnion is a good idea or not is debatable.

I don't know about jobs leaving the US due to NAFTA, but I do know that Canadians live in fear of the day when Americans "take" our water. This is no lame fear. It is what the Dunces who came up with this NAFTA document have agreed to--until, if and when the Bush fan, er, prime minister who's in power reopens the debate. Here's hoping.

As per your mention, in both speaking and writing, a small number of Canadians have begun to use American terms such as "college" to describe university. (Universities have always been deemed philosophically "higher" than technically-oriented colleges.) And, in writing, there's more dropping of the letter "u" from certain Canadian words. However, these examples are not the norm.

No biggie Tim.

Good luck John, Hil, Oba =).

A Disappearing Border?

Don't hold your breath, Gillian, it's not going to happen, simply because the cultural differences between Canada and the U.S. are becoming greater all of the time. Try reading "Fire and Ice", which measures how much farther apart the populations of the U.S. and Canada are in things like religiousity, education, healthcare, etc. Oh, and we (Canadian citizens) still vote in large enough numbers that a self-appointed elite won't impose it on us.

Fasten your seatbelts, the next few years are going to be a bumpy ride.

Election Fraud

I'm always astounded by all the concern about the candidates -- what they say, who's ahead, etc.

No one seems to give equal passion or concern to whether we even CAN have an honest election in 2008. More years have gone by, and what has been done to ensure that the Karl Roves and other thieves aren't going to steal and/or suppress the votes?

Boy, folks sure are sensitive.

I thought it was obvious that Tim was being sarcastic.

Also, what's up with the Salon bashing Obama thing commenters keeping bringing up? I would be more concerned if Salon always seemed on Obama's side or any candidates side for that matter. It seems to me that they've been balancing the good and bad.

Pot calling kettle...um... [metaphor abort]

Who better qualified than Joe Biden to point out an embarrassing verbal gaffe?

Wednesday, August 8, 2007 11:32 AM

Ha Ha Ha

Nice Magic_Al. Ouch. That was very quick wit. Thanks for the good humor.

In all fairness though, Joe ain't a bad guy, he just reached for the quotable cookie jar (an old school political trick attempted by a young man at the time) when he thought no one was looking; but somewhere between the time he reached and the time he began to eat the cookie, the media resource revolution had begun. And, no one forgets the first big "score," in any arena.

Obama is going to be a bit rough around the edges for a while; don't worry, they'll slap him hard and he'll find his pace.

I am not so sure Biden wasn't using the the title to instruct. This group of democrats seems very interested in helping one another, even at this point in the game; though that approach seems to be on the wane.

I was amused

I interpreted it as not just sarcasm, but a jab at the people who accuse Salon of biasing their coverage against Obama. I don't know if that's how TG meant it, but either way I was amused.

Gaffes are always worse coming from Democrats

I got the sarcasm. Of course a Republican would consider Obama's mistake as proof-positive he's not qualified.

And yet one of the most popular page-a-day calendars is devoted to the top 365 stupid things said by W. Isn't it amazing how Republicans can say the most racist, sexist, ignorant and just plain stupid things and get a free pass from our media? Every time I hear arguments that the media is too liberal, I always think of something really really dumb the President just recently said that no journalist will point out.

Attacking Democrats for having money is another one. You NEVER EVER EVER hear a story about how much money a Republican candidate has, but Edwards is too rich, and makes his money as a trial attorney! The horror! Remember that Whitewater land deal the Clintons were involved with? That turned into an investigation of stains on blue dresses and impeachment hearings for Christ sake.

Republicans get a free pass all the time, but you know when Obama or Biden or any Democrat makes a gaffe it WILL be notice and reported as "Proof positive" we can't trust them.
