It depends on what the meaning of the word "in" is

Alberto Gonzales explains himself, again.

The letters thread is now closed.

What careful language

"Leadership in the DOJ," "Leadership OF the DOJ," it doesn't matter. No grammarian would say there's any ambiguity here. Even if Kennedy had said "at the DOJ," his meaning is beyond clear. If congress takes this weaselly "explanation" and allows it to deflect their wrath against Gonzo, then I really and truly do give up.

Nita hit it right on the nail head.

These senators are being made to look like fools, and deservedly so, if they are willing to accept the part. The Spector's are the "key" transition players who set the deal up, scream bloody murder in the public forum and then develop strategies while having coffee with the protagonists on Air Farce One. The GOP Senators are the worse aspect of this surreal charade as they are willing to let their country and colleagues swirl like turds down a toilet for short term gain, or possibly, coffee and further strategy on Air Farce One.

No wonder he polls depict Congress as brain dead losers. They are.

Hostile witnesses....

It's a sad day when members of Congress have to carefully choose their language when questioning the Attorney General of the United States (and those other mini-weasels) because he will parse and equivocate about the tiniest opportunity in sytax or verbiage to claim that a lie is really a truth.

I think Chuck Schumer said it...it's really about the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. Not a speck of finely sliced literal interpretation.

While the Republicans were willing to eviscerate Clinton over his parsing of language in regard to his sexual activities (about which they had NO RIGHT to question him), they obviously feel that lies of ommission or obfuscation are acceptible when it comes to serious issues that violate federal law and the principles of the constitution.

There is only one way to stop this. Every time one of these bozos is in the hot seat on Capitol Hill, the committee members need to take the position that they will be lied to if they do not take the time and energy to creatively block every single verbal exit. Of course, the questions might not be answered at all, but at least invoking illegitimate privilege paints the spots on the leopard. Whereas answering with the type of "truthtelling" in which Gonzales and his cohorts engage, leaves us with the likes of Arlen Specter conceeding that they didn't ACTUALLY lie.

These antics are clearly engineered as a form of political gamesmanship. Having been burned so many times, one would think Congress would have figured out the rules by now and started to apply them a little more ruthlessly.

Even If You Buy It ....

OK, Gonzo told the literal truth. A matter of interpretation, sure, but as long as there's one interpretation, no matter how implausible, that's literally true he can skate.

This may be enough to save him from a perjury charge. But, last time I looked intentionally misleading Congress was still a felony, doesn't require that the person have been placed under oath, and doesn't have a "literal truth" defense.

I'm so glad that we've restored honesty and integrity to the White House.

Gonzo performance(s)

This whole thing is a joke and makes everyone involved (including the Senators) look like fools. How long can this go on? Either the Senate needs to get a special prosecutor to investigate Gonzales or they need to drop it. It is painful to continue watching this mess!!

So sad

Whenever Gonzales lies the Baby Jesus cries!

No parsing

Gonzalez is a liar. Rove is a purely political agent who has been manipulating government business for his own agenda. Bush is aware of everything. It is a farce, paid for by taxpayers who are screwed every time these people put their pants on in the morning.

Congress: Get Gonzalez out. Expose Rove. Take Bush down, a notch, a peg, a football field. And let's have all have a good laugh at Cheney's "heart".

How many surrealists does it take to change a light bulb?

Fish.

Gonzales' "evasion" makes about as much sense. Kennedy's question doesn't reference the place of the briefing, it asks who did the briefing (Rove) and who was briefed (leadership of the Justice Department).

Impeach the bastards.

The rest is just a colossal waste of time.
