On your mark, get set, pray!

A Brownback supporter says the senator from Kansas needs "protection from the enemy."

The letters thread is now closed.

Wondertwin Powers, Activate!

Perhaps someone should ask Sam whether he'd rather have 1000 folks praying for him, or 1000 canvassers . . .

Friday, July 27, 2007 12:18 PM

Replace God

With Allah and replace enemy with America and you'd have a muslim support letter for Bin Laden.

Friday, July 27, 2007 12:19 PM

Yikes...

Pray that God would supernaturally activate the Christians in Iowa

I'm not a prayer expert, but that doesn't seem like the kind of thing you should be asking God to do. It sounds a bit like they want to create some sort of zombie army for Brownback.

Friday, July 27, 2007 12:25 PM

This is clearly the work of a silly, unserious political outlier. I wouldn't hold Repbulicans or the Brownback Campaign responsible...

...unless of course, Democrat candidates are also willing to accept responsibility for the kind of stuff that is seen posted on Salon, Daly Kos or FireDogLake.

As for "protection from the enemy," that part is rich. Isn't the Bush Administration, the President of the United States, regarded by the most partisan of Democrats as "the enemy"? Forget bin Laden or Al Zawahiri. Forget about Hamas or Syria or Iran. Never mind North Korea or Castro or Chavez or Mugabe. The world's Public Enemy Number 1 is George W. Bush, right?

That's the pathology of the left nowadays.

Friday, July 27, 2007 12:28 PM

No

Bush is not public enemy number one at this point........A possible Brownback presidency is.

Friday, July 27, 2007 12:30 PM

And As For Castro

How has our barabaric, simian, nearly 50 year embargo worked out?

That's called economic terror.

Friday, July 27, 2007 12:30 PM

Elephantman

What are you talking about? If you don't have anything rational or relevant to say, don't.

Progressives are allowed to be amused when someone, way out of mainstream American politics, has people wanting to stamp "Gott mit Uns" on their belt buckles and hope that God will somehow be pleased to do what American voters will not.

This is not yet a theocracy and God, I hate to tell you, really doesn't care who wins.

WTF ???

(When Christians vote, our values move forward in the culture war when Christians stay home, the enemy wins.)

So now everyone else is THE ENEMY?

Pray for God to break the spiritual strongholds over Iowa that would keep Sam from being brought more into the national spotlight.

Oh the HUBRIS! So if he wins, it's because God loves him. And if he loses, it's because Satanic forces have conspired against him. What arrogance.

Maybe God doesn't want you to win, Sam Brownback. Maybe God wants you to go into your closet and pray in secret and find that big honkin' log in your eye.

You Better Pray Good

"Pray that God would use this poll to weed out those candidates that would push our country away from the Lord."

Is this code for Mitt Romney? You gotta love the Jeebus crowd.

Friday, July 27, 2007 12:55 PM

"The world's Public Enemy Number 1 is George W. Bush, right?"

Just about. If that idiot (and I use the term precisely here) starts another war before leaving office then he will prove himself to be 'The world's Public Enemy Number 1'.

As for the prayin', Brownback should pray that God doesn't apply Leviticus to him and his family. I don't think he'll pass muster with his own religion.

Friday, July 27, 2007 01:06 PM

Pray that God would supernaturally activate the Christians in Iowa to pray and go to the straw poll to vote for Sam.

It sounds more like Barnabas Collins is running.

It would be funny if there weren't so many of these kooks. I do think the Christian fad has ebbed. If you notice the rhetoric coming from the christian right is becomming more outlandish and unintentionally funny. Its going back to the days of Pat Robertson wrestling Satan on his livingroom floor. The silly creation museum, etc. they're turning into jokes. Unfortunately there are still enough of them more than willing to fork over their money to these charletans that they will still be a force to recon with, but they are increasingly turning into a freak show.

In a few years the majority of people running to their mega church every week will be embarrassed to admit they ever did. They'll be off on the next weird snake oil fad.

"....the enemy wins".....

From the article:"...(When Christians vote, our values move forward in the culture war when Christians stay home, the enemy wins.)..."

Who is the enemy, who do they mean...me...you...?

In a pluralistic, diverse society, how is it that xenophobes of this sort are...spokespeople for anyone on any level?

This whole partisan culture b.s. gets more worrisome the deeper you dig...and frankly, from my POV, most of it seems to be coming from the right. Big time.

Friday, July 27, 2007 02:57 PM

You cannot petition the Lord with prayer!

Seriously, I never understood how this mass-prayer thing was supposed to work.

Friday, July 27, 2007 03:02 PM

Praying for the wrong things

Forget Brownback! How about a mass prayer to end global warming or to make SUVs get 60 miles per gallon? Or better yet, the winning Mega Millions numbers!

Friday, July 27, 2007 03:22 PM

What God Wants

Read this book by Neale Donald Walsch. If you Dare. It is very small and very dangerous...to the status quo.

Peace,

st john

Friday, July 27, 2007 08:14 PM

Ah, Wesley_Powell pretty much covers it...

Yeah, the Bush Presidency is no longer Public Enemy Number One with all the Democrats pointing toward 2008.

Never mind current affairs...

As usual, the WSJ Editorial Page is a step ahead and on point:

We have seen "the enemy" and he is people who would vote for Brownback.

If you were to ask these people what their biggest concerns were, I could bet actual money that Iraq wouldn't even be on the list. The "culture warriors" live in a whole different reality then the rest of us, where monogamous gays are the biggest threat to America right now and Islam itself attacked America, not just a fringe group.

It wouldn't matter what else was going on in the country, gay marraige and abortion are always the most important thing in the world and events like 9/11 are just the natural progression to the end times. It doesn't surprise me that the culture war took a back seat this time around.

I hope this really does mean that the "christinization" of America is finally beginning to wane.

So if Brownback loses...

does this mean

A) Not enough people were praying.

B) God didn't agree with their bulletpoints.

C) Brownback is a sinner not deserving of God's help.

D) Brownback's okay, but God prefers a different candidate.

E) There is no God.

Saturday, July 28, 2007 08:49 AM

They should try a different prayer

Mark Twain pretty much nailed it with "The War Prayer"

http://www.midwinter.com/lurk/making/warprayer.html

They should think about that. I do.

Saturday, July 28, 2007 03:27 PM

praying to win

Nothing fails like prayer

Just wasted words on empty air JG

Saturday, July 28, 2007 10:27 PM

good one elephant dude...i mean man

way to go totally off topic....

as long as you're there....if ONE rabid republican like yourself can actually show me how spying on americans and tapping their phones has actually stopped a single terrorist attack...then MAYBE this radical right piece in the WSJ might mean something.

as it is....is just sounds like a bunch of hot air. if all you can say is "well that's all classified...so i have no proof"...well that is not going to cut it.

if we're looking for a REASON when the next attack happens...i think a more likely cause than the democratic opposition to bugging our phones might be the stupid illegal war that ended up totally rejuvinating al quaeda instead of destroying it. think about it.

back on topic: if the religious right would just stick to praying as their primary political tool....i have no problem with that...it will not effect any elections.
