How the actual threat from al-Qaida in Iraq seems to shift depending on who's talking.

  • Who in their right mind

believes the endless parade of lies spewed out by this administration? Whatever happened to 'fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me'?

  • Check the footnotes.

That's where they hide the truth.

  • Can't believe the administration

It seems like either there's been progress and country is safer thanks to Bush, or the danger is still there or even growing, depending on what's politically more useful at the moment. We're in great danger what the Republicans want to say Democrats don't take terrorism seriously enough, but never safer when Bush's record is being defended. We maybe have to stop assuming anything from the administration contains the unbiased truth, and just look to other sources. The non-embedded non-stenographer journalists actually have a pretty good record so far.

  • Credibility chasm

At this point, if any representative of the Bush administration points to a door and calls it a door, I'd have a serious reason to suspect that it's actually a camouflaged window. In other words, I don't believe anything they say. Nobody believes anything they say. I almost am more ready to believe the militants, because at least they make no bones about their objective: to destroy everyone who isn't on their side, God willing.

However, it makes you wonder. Given the administration's frequent (and often effective) use of the rally-round-the-flag effect, what they need most is another terrorist act, which, if successful, they can blame on the liberal obstructionists. Thus, they could make use of both their bogey-men: the Terrorists and the Liberals. If I think so, you can bet Those Who Hate Us think so too. The militants can think of no better ally to their cause than a rabid neocon on the American throne. (Yes. I said "throne".) So maybe Chertoff's "gut feeling" has some basis to it. Question is, what are our leaders doing about it, trying to prevent another terrorist act as best they can, or thinking of another invasion (Iran?) they can justify with it?

    What a mess.

  • The Prez Who Cried Wolf

When every single thing this administration's done has been done to benefit republican political power, it's impossible to think this is any different. It's a shame. If there is an attack, it will be Bush's fault, not the democrats, that it wasn't dealt with seriously beforehand.

Speaking of dealing with it seriously, they sent out the NIE, and then have said NOTHING about how they're going to prepare for a possible attack. Nothing. Not a single thing. To prepare to stop a terrorist attack here in the States, Bush's solution seems to be continue bombing Iraq. Is there a certain lack of credibility to that? Are they going to hire extra screeners at the airports? Maybe lock down the ports? Double and triple check educational visas? Reroute Local police to cover public transportation and civic centers? Increase security at sporting events? What does the administration plan to do?

  • New product time is September

I imagine a lot of us noticed how ill-coordinated the spin cycle has been this time. The administration wanted to adhere to its usual practice and roll out the new product in September. Facts on the ground, and maybe a push from their constituents, got the Senate in gear in mid-summer, and the administration has been off its game, with disjointed comments, ragtag push-back from the pet generals (the General in charge of reconstruction efforts got 6 or 8 minutes on CNN the other day, and it was just short of embarrassing), and whatever that was that Lindsey Graham was doing on Sunday.

The requirement of an interim report in the summer was inspired politics. The shock of the final document, and the change from early reports that no bench marks would be deemed satisfactory to 8 out of 18 satisfactory, coupled with the dishonest definition of satisfactory progress, not widely noted in the press, laid the groundwork for the current votes, and put the republicans on the defensive.

Altogether, pretty good work for the Democratic leadership.

And great to see Digby here. More, please.

  • B-b-but...

I thought we were fighting them over there so we don't have to fight them here!

  • I think I can help ....

"I'm guessing that we are once again dealing with a battle of the intelligence agencies. One group, we don't know which, is saying that al-Qaida in Iraq is working with bin Laden to strike in the United States [(this would be Dick Cheney)], and the administration is hyping it to justify the occupation. Another group is telling us that al-Qaida in Iraq is really a separate group that has its own agenda and we needn't worry that it is interested in the United States. [(this would be the CIA analysts and everyone else)]"

But our main concern should be, who do you think Preznit Bush will listen to?

  • Watch the Senate Cower

This is just the fodder the cowardly Senate and Congress need to justify yet another nod to this administration. The "A" word has been uttered and anyone voting to bring the troops home now will once again be branded as pro terrorist. Both sides absolutely disgust me. Stop reading papers, turn off the main stream media and stop buying their sponsors products. Maybe then we will be told something almost more like the, um, truth.

    IMPEACH CHENEY!

  • Typical Bushit

Scare the people, maybe they will change their mind on my acceptance ratings. AQI my foot. Another Bush creation in more ways than one or could it be a result of an illegal invasion of their country?

  • Speaking of Smoking 'Em Out . . .

The thing that scares me about the report(s) on al-Qaida is not the conflicting signals, nor the double-speak both of which are simply hallmarks of this administration's lying, but rather the idea that the Bush Gang is setting itself up to be right about a heightened risk of attack on U.S. soil by allowing it to happen (at the very least) again. I think they've proven themselves capable of stooping as low as they need to go to enrich themselves and grab power. Since their "political capital" account is running pretty low, it's not beyond reason that they're looking to have U.S. citizens make a deposit.

But, what I'm more interested in at the moment is an update on the Congressional subpoenas' progress in smoking out the truth from those on-the-run cave dwellers of the RNC and the White House.
