Bush will just ignore any legislative limits
Were any veto-proof Iraq policy change measures to pass Congress, Dodo the Decider Guy would no doubt simply cite his asserted Unlimited Unitary Executive Authority as Commander in Chief.

This IS Good News
Better late than never. I hope people don't try to hang out the Republicans who are finally doing the right thing- regardless of their motive.
Welcome them with open arms. It's the right thing for the country.

May the public remember how the Republicans voted
"Lugar, who is one of several Republicans that has recently broken with Bush"
Oh?
From the LA Times article you link to:
"Although Lugar and Voinovich voiced skepticism about the deployment of additional troops when the president announced his plans in January, neither lawmaker has supported any of the efforts by Democrats or Republicans to formally challenge Bush."
I remember respecting Lugar a long time ago. But in the end, I can only judge him by his votes.

Earth to Richard, earth to Richard.
Many of the conditions and motivations that were claimed to have existed when you authorized force almost five years ago never did exist. They are not "irrelevant to our current situation," however.
Bush needed to obscure the fact that had he and his not been sleeping at the wheel, 9/11 never would have happened in the first place.
He still needs to maintain the fiction that by invading Iraq, he was dealing with actual terrorism, rather than just stealing another country's oil.
And speaking of actual terrorists, a Bush-appointed judge just dismissed all charges against admitted and covicted narco-terrorist Luis Posada Carriles without so much as a slap on the wrist, after his arrest for illegal immigration. One of Posada's crime partners in an airline bombing, Dr. Orlando Bosch, was commuted, then pardoned by Bush's dad 17 years ago. Salon hasn't seen fit to address the subject in many years, but perhaps now's the time:

A couple of observations.
Bushit wasn't asleep at the wheel. Like FDR he needed an attack to begin his own. "Bin Laden determined to attack w/in the US" precipitated a "OK you've covered your ass" response from Bushit.
If the amendment mentioned in the posting is separate from the one Lugar and Warner submitted to have Bushit remove the army early in 2008 then I applaud them. If it is "attached" to the one I have been hearing bantered about yesterday which doesn't include wording that orders Bushit to follow it, then it's just bull shit . That's why Ried isn't buying into it. It's just rhetoric w/o teeth. Is it a separate amendment?
Impeach. The rest is just a waste of time.

Votes are what count, everything else is just talk
No getting my hopes up here.
It's a basis for negotiation, though.
But if Dems have power (of the purse), I haven't seen it.
So I don't trust them much to push back against a sham plan that still fails to hold Il Duce and co. accountable.

What? You don't think he'll get another authorization?
Hasn't happened so far - so he'll get another and call it a mandate. Sorry folks, the Congress blew it and now we are not getting out of Iraq for another 7 years.

Today's Meet the Press
It slays me to hear Lindsay Graham say, extra-vehemently (the guy wouldn't shut up, Jim Webb had to use a crowbar to get a word in), that we're not going to let politicians run the war. Well, what the hell is Bush? A warrior? He's a politician, Lindsey, who unlike a lot of politicians including the guy sitting next to you, did everything he could to stay out of harm's way during his generation's time of war. And by the way, who exactly is General Petraeus, this man whose word on What We Should Do Now you so anxiously await? He's one in a long string of generals who have served, failed (or said the wrong things) and shuffled off into anonymity. He certainly isn't an elected official, he's a appointee-of-the-moment and his "take" on what to do in Iraq is just as politically motivated (i.e. concerned about one's continued employment in an important position) as any senator's.
Christ, I can't watch these shows, it raises my blood pressure too high.
