Forcing Congress' hand?
Indeed they are forcing Congress' hand. And this is precisely what the committee members expected. They're giving BushCo enough rope to hang themselves with. Not unexpected, and not a problem.

I've been watching this hearing on c-span3,
and it's been quite amazingly fiery - and fascinating - perhaps even more so than if Miers had appeared.
Cannon is a fury of self-righteous indignation in defending his president, and the dems are calm but outspoken - and insistent. Including a reference to Bush as the naked emperor, and a liar.
I look forward to reading your take.

I've noticed something......
As the White House continues to run and hide and duck from answering even the most innocuous questions about the purge of US attorneys, the comments from conservatives to the effect that "There's no scandal here!" have dried up. Not that those people have changed their minds, I'm sure. It's just that it's pretty hard to keep pretending that the White House is totally innocent and has nothing to hide when they are expending so much effort at acting guilty and at hiding.

Should be freaked out right now. The government is basically torn between those seeking rule of law, and those seeking rule of Bush. Nomatter what side of the aisle you fall on, logically you would want checks and balances. If this goes to the court, and they rule in the President's favor, kiss oversight goodbye. Forever.
I think the investigations launched against clinton were nonsense, a political tool to put the brakes on his popularity, but even I wouldn't be stupid enough to suggest taking away oversight of the President just because Republicans used it to political advantage. That's just stupid.
These thugs are shouting at the rain because they know they're guilty. Like Bush always says, if you don't have anything to hide, why are you hiding?

Miers Protects Liars
I think when we heard those gloriously goofy mash notes she sent to junior we knew Harriet "wasn't there". That she's maintaining the status quo surprises no one.
I agree with the previous letter writer who posted something about standing back and giving them more rope with which to hang their deluded selves.

Stand tall, Congress
I watched the committee session this morning; the GOP representatives who showed up predictably disgraced themselves in their jackboot-licking of Bush, the Unitary Executive. I watched them and wondered whether they'd have a chance in 2008, assuming elections are permitted to be held. Can they really hold on? Is the incumbency edge so strong that they can so stridently side against the law, and for their man, without consequences? I don't know.
If it ends up going to the Supreme Court, the tainted Supremes of 2000 will side in favor of the President, regardless of law. It'll hinge on enigmatic Kennedy as the fulcrum -- talk about a perilous position. Law or ideology, Judge Kennedy; we know what the GOP has chosen, years ago -- they made their Faustian bargain. What about you?
My hope is that those in Congress do absolutely everything they can on this to go forward. This rogue administration began ugly, and is looking to end uglier still.

I AM Freaking Out, But...
Jedimaster, you are exactly right. What is going on here is terrifying.
But what can the common US citizen do about it? I wrote my congresswoman. I vote. My power seems to end there. I refuse to get worked up about a situation that I have no real power to change. Barring Bush/Cheney declaring a national emergency and refusing to leave office, this nightmare will be superficially over in 2008.
On the other hand, a majority of American people voted this turkey into office the second time and deserve to feel the wrath of their very poor decision. And the rest of us? Welcome to life in the minority.

Reality Check
Bush and Cheney have never been elected to their current jobs.
The first time their cabal used election fraud to get them appointed and the second time they used election fraud to outright steal their jobs. The extreme and blatant and not the least bit secret election fraud in Ohio alone had to be overwhelming in order to insure the tiniest margin of theft for them. That's how much the majority of Americans didn't want them stealing the White House again in 2004.
It's vital never to forget that this administration is entirely illigetimate.

Agreed, Anonymous. These miscreants were installed in 2000 by a partisan, throughly corrupted Supreme Court, and claimed "victory" in 2004 by the slimmest margin in electoral history, having rigged the Ohio numbers just enough to give the appearance of having "won." However, since they were never dutifully elected in the first place, this administration is by default illegitimate.

If one fails to appear for a subpoena, aren't they in contempt?
They just decide to be a no-show? And that's OK? I don't get it.

I opposed Ms. Myers in a civil action many years ago. It was settled prior to any court appearances. At that time I thought her clients are going to get her in trouble some day and although it took awhile it has now happened.It's too bad she doesn't have better discernment.
