Senate panel votes to strip $4.8 million from Cheney's office

In what will almost certainly end up as a symbolic vote, a Senate subcommittee decided not to provide some of the funding for the vice president's office until it complies with an executive order.

The letters thread is now closed.

Where Are The Leaders We Elected In 2006?

In November of 2006 I was jubilant with all of the promise that the new Congress held for reclaiming accountability in Washington. The Senate and House have failed us time and time again when it comes to comprehensive ethics reform, funding the war in Iraq without timetables, and restoring our constitutional rights. We need to communicate with our legislature that the money they receive from corporate donors may continue to roll in but our votes are not for sale. We demand accountability from Cheney and if we don’t get it then we will replace them in 2008. That is the great thing about a Democracy. It is ours and it is about time we acted like it!

I'm with you, Irsigman

What if they're willing to forgo the money in order to get more power in some other way?

so what's that

One or two fewer human hearts to eat?

Why are we acting so juvenile?

I mean defenses like, Well Clinton did it first... and chasing down with false bravado things like this that have little or no chance of passing seem like huge distractions and time waters. Go after Gonzales for lying to Congress, go after Cheney for his crimes, and then take out the smirking monkey at the top. and let's get shit accomplished. Quit wasting time on pissing matches and just do something!

Tar and feather him.

It's the only way. Then send Libby the bill. He's got to have some spare change left from that defense fund his pals set-up I'm sure. Does anyone know where he's been vacationing these days? I mean, after all he's been through...

Although I don't know, or for that matter, like the man, if what is being said about his wife is true, I like her gumption. Maybe the Senate should subpoena her once she divorces him.

Let's Be Honest

Please?!!! "stands little chance"??? Getting rid of Cheney should be Job Number One for everyone who loves this nation. He has just about ruined it for us as it is. PLEASE read the crap that he spewed over at the Project for the New American Century. PLEASE read the letter that they sent to Bill Clinton, in 1998, and understand the paranoia about Saddam's WMDs. PLEASE get this man outta here.

This is not suprising...

...darth boy will just replace the dough with some of his neo-com "defense fund", which I don't think is a known factor, but I'm sure exists.

What a supreme waste of time and effort

Haven't the elected representatives of the American people anything better to do with their time?

Impeachment comes to mind.

To The Extreme is the Point

The Senate committee puts a motion forward to cut funding since he claims he isn't part of the executive. The Senate approves the bill. The House approves the bill. Bush vetoes the bill - of course - and makes it clear once and for all the the Vice Presidency is, in fact, part of the Executive by the stroke of his own pen. Once that matter is put to bed forever - and let's face it, we shouldn't even be having the discussion - then we can move on to reaffirming all the other roles and responsibilities of the Vice Presidency that up until 2000 were never in question. _That's_ the point.

The real problem with all of this, beyond that obvious difficulties of getting the bill passed in the first place, is the time factor. It's starting to seem like a basketball game, with Bush/Cheney in the lead and Congress desperately trying three-pointers and making fouls to win before time runs out.

Um...

This strategy concerns me. I certainly see the appeal in calling out Cheney's camp on their ridiculous bullshit. However, it seems to be that taking the argument that he is not part of the Executive to it's extreme and cutting off their Executive funding is in essence validating the argument. As fun as something like this is to talk about, it's also handing a whole lot over to the other side by treating the claim as if it it were valid.

Keep your foot on the throat of the fat man!

Do not let up Senate! Do not! Now that you have that fat fuck of a war criminal in your sights.. fire at will. And don't be discouraged if the Republifreaks come up with their usual parlimentary stall tactics. LET THEM STALL! If you don't approve the money, he doesn't get any. The president can't approve or spend money, and the Republican's cannot approve or spend money without a majority.

Kill the cancer by not watering it!... Let the beast whither on the vine. If you need my help, I will be happy to come to Washington with a baseball bat.
