There's always Nixon

The good news for Bush: He's only the second most unpopular president of all time.

The letters thread is now closed.

I have to believe

That the situation is different. In the less media saturated world of the early 1970's, there must have been a higher percentage of the population not distracted by the antics of Paris Hilton et, all. Even with one point of difference, this is still an apples to oranges comparison.

History will judge?

For many presidencies, the passage of time has helped throw a gauzy film of reminiscence over the duration. I don't think nostalgia will help old W out -- as the fallout from his incompetence continues to rain down-- Iraq, a squandered military, foreign policy in tatters, imperial law-breaking and Constitution-shredding, not to mention the tell-alls from tortured prisoners and former administration officials eager to get the stink off. The children and grandchildren will ask: how could you all be so stupid in 2004? And what can we reply?

re cosmique

Right on but just as importantly, if not more so, and still yet to be felt is Bush's new supreme court over the course of the "Roberts Years", they threaten to take us back to the 19th century.

Then our descendants will really be asking 'what the f?'

Nixon deserved his status.

I'm sure he's rotting in hell with others of his ilk. Make room for Kissinger, Dick. Nonetheless, Tricky Dick opened China for what has resulted in a great opportunity for Bushit to "borrow" the money to fund his preemptive war erection. Let's hope they don't call that "marker" in any time soon. Transformer toys anyone?

Hey, Bushit, being #2 isn't so bad. Maybe you can try harder like Avis. Now that Hertz doesn't want him anymore I'd bet O.J. is available for some snappy commercials for those spots. Shruber can have him running through hell high-fiving all the distraught fellows he'll be having a hot lunch with someday. We all know how hard it is for O.J. to hide his compensation monies. Maybe Bushit can have President Cheney help him out a bit, or maybe he can do the spots for free, for a pardon...

There's Time for President Bush to Pull Ahead

Though President Bush is trailing Nixon in the disapproval category, he’s got a lock on being the all time worst US president. We’ve all heard rumors that he might be trying for the “all country” worst by attacking Iran and creating a once in a millennium mess in the Middle East. If he does that, President Bush will leave Nixon’s disapproval rating in the dust. We will have a new champion in all categories.

"Always with the negative waves, Moriarty, always with the negative waves."

I can see you're one of those glass half-empty guys, Tim. Give Walker Bush a chance . . . it's early yet, and he's built of a lot of momentum. I fully believe he will SHATTER Milhouse Nixon's cherished records in the fullsomeness of time.

After all, Nixon did finally end the a war during his 2nd term. Bush seems far more likely to start a 2nd (or 3rd) WAR during his.

Only 60%?

Who are the 40% that view these two stains on America favorably? We need to take away their soma.

Then he's TIED with Nixon...

If these results are based on a poll, 1 percentage point must be within the margin of error. That would put GWB in a statistical tie with RMN. But in my heart, Bush will remain the worst. president. ever. (I hope.)

Bushie, you're doing a heckuva job.

Tricky Dick v. Dubya

I think Dubya will end up lower than Nixon. To put is more simply, lousy President that Nixon was, he was not an unmitigated disaster, indeed he did a few positive things.

Vietnam -- Nixon did not actually get the US into Vietnam, and in the end get the US out. Moreover, for various reasons, on a geopolitical level Vietnam was not the total mess that Iraq is (mostly because of oil(, so on the Vietnam front, I think Nixon edges Dubya.

Nixon did not allow the US to be attacked by a group of terrorists after discounting warnings from various entities as politically motivated.

Nixon did preside (unenthusiastically) over the enforcement of civil rights rather than the dismantling thereof.

Nixon did not inherit a massive fiscal surplus and blow the budget into a deficit that threatens the longterm viability of the US economy.

Nixon did reach a raprochment with China and engage in Realpolitic which involved discussions with enemies, ratcheting down tensions, rather than encouraging various yahoos to casually suggest nuking countries like Iran.

Nixon resigned, as did Spiro Agnew, any sign of Bush or Cheney doing that?

Someone from the 41% implied by this survey help me out . . .

I'm going to name a handful of things for which the idiot child-emperor should be relgated to the most loathesome and shameful corners of history, then will someone who views him in a positive or even neutral light give me an equal number of reasons he should not be run out of Washington on a rail.

After publicly stating that he would not accept the presidency if he lost the popular vote in 2000, Bush literally walked away mid-press conference from reporters asking what he meant by that.

He either masterminded or rubber stamped the Patriot Act, a document so Draconian and obtuse that it guts the Bills of Rights while its authorship is unknown to most Americans.

In the wake of 9-11 he redirected valuable military resources away from the known epicenter of the movement responsible for the act to wage an inept war against an unrelated party. The fact that his father's previous exploits in Iraq lend a weird Freudian subtext to this entire thing only makes our country look creepier and more imperial.

He allowed his Vice President to maintain ties to the petroleum industry while writing federal energy policy, and has supported the VPs stonewalling w/ regars to the committee assembled to write said policy.

He was complicit in the outing of a CIA agent for political purposes.

While acknowledging that his VP's chief of staff perjured himself and obstructed justice, he has taken no measure to correct the lies or obtain the obstructed justice.

He lied to his countrymen to justify his Freudian Iraq adventure.

That's seven (to my mind) impeachable offenses this chucklehead has committed. Who in the hell still thinks he looks good? A few more months and we will be able to compare him to Stalin instead of Nixon.
