Why would he ask for your advice
when he has no plan to take it, or anyone else's?
-
A little of both
They hate America, some and you too some, George. It's not complicated. Go pick up a European newspaper from before 2001. The stereotypic view of Americans that Euros believed was sort of true is the cowboy hat and overalls, no shirt no shoes dumb gun nut redneck. Hell go all the way back to the 50's the view of Americans outside of the US was of a naif, a rube. Someone who didn't speak two languages, was pretty dull and stupid and would shout at the locals to make themselves understood. George Bush only brought that stereotype to life for them. Bigotry made real.
So don't feel bad George. Yeah they hate you, because you're an asshole. But you're OUR Asshole, you are us.

The USA is Paris Hilton
Vacuous, self-absorbed, stupid, rich, arrogant... what's not to like? HEY! DO YOU HAVE OIL? WE WANT IT! WE'RE COMIN' IN!
Psst Bush43 -- get rid of Cheney and watch your approval rating skyrocket up to 29%...
-
But enough about me...
"What lessons does history have for a president facing the turmoil I'm facing? How will history judge what we've done? Why does the rest of the world seem to hate America? Or is it just me they hate?"
What do you think about me?

A better title for Baker's piece...
Baker's piece should have been entitled "The Compensatory Mechanisms of Sociopaths During Crises", because that is what he describes to a "T".
What is most revealing about Baker's piece is that Bush doesn't seem interested in actual policy.... with all that is going on in the world, asking questions about the nature of good and evil is a complete non sequitor, an indication that Bush is completely disengaged from objective reality, and attempting to mask that disengagement through appearing to be engaged in "big" issues.
-
The luxury of concern
Is there something just a bit disingenous about George Bush's "oh, woe is me" confabs with the specially invited? He'll go back to his lap of luxury in 2009 and ponder the weighty issues of his actions and legacy...when the mood grabs him. Otherwise, he'll spend his days enjoying the privilaged carefree exsistence he's enjoyed his entire life.
If he really cared about higher things, he'd be spending every waking minute trying to correct his disastrous actions in Iraq, try to mend fences and repair the damage he's done this country in our foreign relationships, use his position to try and assist the American people (not his big oil, big insurance, big drug, big corporation buddies) in terms of energy independance, health care and immigration.
He knows what legacy will be, and it won't be pretty. He's just looking for some ass kissers to pat him on the head and say, "You did good Georgie."

Charlie, Don't Be Such a Wet Blanket!
This is the guy American wanted to have a beer with, right? Kick back in the Presidential Jet, open a col' brewski, and shoot the shiat about America's game. It's all good, right?
-
And we're not impeaching this lunatic because...?
There is no good reason. Impeach now.

Here's an easy answer
"What is the nature of good and evil in the post-Sept. 11 world?"
Answer: Powerful men who think that they are fighting for good against evil are actually committing the most evil acts.

Bush talking to intellectuals?
On the face of it I am delighted that Bush has finally started to talk to people other than Cheney and Wolfowitz. It's long long overdue. People that could finally explain to him what misery he has unleashed upon the world he has been may give him some motivation to do the right thing, finally, in his last year and a half.
We all know what is going on, though. He is bringing in a bunch of neocon imperialist footsoldiers to tell him how great he is and how the world hates him because they all know he is doing the right thing and they don't like it and how he will be remembered as a genius. Greenwald wrote about a luncheon filled with academics who said all of that to him a while back.
Bringing in people with the expressed purpose of giving intellectual weight to your disastrous, ridiculed, and failed leadership is something I would expect from Charles Foster Kane, not the President of the United States. It is going to be a long 18 months indeed.

So many questions George, so little time
Let's begin, because I know you've got an 11 o'clock tee time.
"What is the nature of good and evil in the post-Sept. 11 world?"
That's easy. You are no good, and your vice president is evil. Next question?
"What lessons does history have for a president facing the turmoil I'm facing?"
History has so many lessons for a leader who created all this turmoil for himself. To paraphrase Greek historian Herodotus: Leaders who fuck with the bull get the horn. You fucked with the bull, George. And now you're getting the horn. The lesson? Get out of the bull ring. You're intellectually outmatched.
"How will history judge what we've done?"
Now seriously, what do you mean "we"? How will history judge what YOU have done? First of all, the only reason you care about how history will judge you is because you are a self-centered egomaniac. Besides, history is written by the winners and you are a loser so it's really out of your hands.
"Why does the rest of the world seem to hate America? Or is it just me they hate?"
Well George, the world is a big place and human beings, despite many shortcomings, eventually forgive most leaders, save for Pol Pot, Hitler, and Idi Amen. So I can't speak for the world, but I personally hate you. I hate your guts. I wish you would just go away. But after you are gone back to the ha ha "ranch" I'll probably not care about you at all one way or another. I think "the world" will probably feel the same. Just keep your insipid monkey face out of the media and enjoy everything you've stolen from all of us.
Don't worry Charlie Rangel, when it comes to baseball and just about everything else, Bush doesn't know what the hell he's talking about either.

A More Specific Question
Right now, are they torturing the five bombers they arrested in Glasgow? Are these people their great examples for justifying torture?
Who is torturing? The Brits? The CIA? Other? Will they get any useful information?
