  • Speaking of Wimps

A quick check of Jim DeMint's Wikipedia biography didn't turn up any mention of military service. He was draft-bait back in the late 60s and could have enlisted, but I guess he had "other priorities" as well.

One thing I note about Yellow Elephants, they're so much more willing to sacrifice somebody else's kids than to admit that Commander Codpiece may not be the second coming.

  • there you have it...

it was only a matter of time. The GOP's strategy for avoiding blame. Such as it is. Blame the democrats for everything.

I just hope the Dems know how to counterpunch this, because there's going to be a lot of it in the next 18 months.

Can we just let South Carolina secede from the Union? Then we can exploit it. Keep it down. And keep people like Jim Demint OUT of the Senate.

    Jesus. What a prick.

  • It would have been so much worse

...if we hadn't run into the barn and set it on fire.

That's just what the Senator said.

  • It would have been worse if we hadn't gone in?

I assume DeMint is talking about U.S. troop casualties here.

How in the world could it have been worse if we hadn't gone in? Do these people actually listen to what they're saying?

  • Ah, South Carolina

Ah, South Carolina, home of the fire-eaters. One 19th-century South Carolina statesman, James Louis Petigru, on being asked the way to the insane asylum in Charleston, replied, "My dear Sir, take any road, you can't go amiss. The whole state is one vast insane asylum."

  • Yeah, and the earth is flat

And it were Franklin Delano , Harry S, John F., D J,Jimmy and Bill who ordered the invasiopn of Iraq. Being a Senator does not mean you cannot be an idiot, that previlege goes for some presidents too, especially the present one. Afterall some democrats even voted for the bill to start the aggression which was based on lies and fraud. So blame them ye good ole repugnicans.

  • Another Gem of Idiocy from a Southern Politician...!!

Has anyone noticed that since a bunch of rich white Southern men started running the American government, everything has turned to shit?! Or that, when a sound bite of rare stupidity is uttered, it's usually from the mouth of a Southerner?!

Isn't it time for the rest of the country-- where most of us live-- to take the government back? And send these yahoos back home on the short yellow bus? PLEASE?!

  • Hi I'm Jim DeMint.

Not to be confused with Creme DeMenthe.

I'm the rootinest, tootinest, shotgun shootinest, roughest, toughest, tobacco wad stuffinest, leanest, meanest name calling machinest sumbitch South of the Rio Grand and West of the Mason Dixon line. I speak loudly and the South Carolina National Guard carries a big stick.

  • Some tough guy

Jim DeMint calls other lawmakers wimps, yet I see no information on his website as to how he might be the tough guy he wants to portray.

No military record, no background in law enforcement, not even a won-loss record in the local tough-man contest.

Maybe he is falling back on his rough and tumble years as a marketing executive.

  • Breathtaking. Truly.

And as badly as things have gone in Iraq, he said, "it would have been worse if we hadn't gone in."

I can't even think of how to respond to this mind-numbingly moronic statement. Is Demint always this goofy? Or is this temporary insanity?

  • What what what?

Just one question did Jim DeMint serve in Vietnam, Grenada, Panama, Balkins or first gulf war?

If not, then he needs to shut the f_ck up!

and think twice about ever so much as uttering the word wimp.

God Damn him and the GOP.

  • Regarding troop deaths.

I had an unsettling thought yesterday upon hearing the number of U.S. troops killed in the downing of a helicopter in Afghanistan, so I thought I'd share it since this entry is tangentially related to the subject.

As bad as it is in Iraq and Afghanistan, the one factor which distinguishes these conflicts from our war-of-choice in Vietnam is that it is not a proxy war for so-called superpowers. I'm starting to wonder if that could be changing. God help us if it is.

Russia under Putin seems to be doing some public sabre-rattling of its own these days. Since we can't be the only great power interested in the natural resources of Iraq/Iran/Afghanistan it makes one wonder what's going on behind the scenes. (After all, we had a hand in Russia's defeat in Afghanistan.) Anyway, ostensibly Russia feels threatened and it's probably only a matter of time before the Bushies begin to include Cold War rhetoric in their War on Terror rhetoric and the two begin to mesh.

My feeling is that a revival of the Cold War would serve the interests of both Bush and Putin in creating more fear to enable the consolidation of their power, the enrichment of their war machine cronies, and the divvying-up of the spoils. I wouldn't be surprised if their behind-closed-doors friendship is just as strong as ever in spite of recent public displays to the contrary. Presumably, the remainder of the old Cold War alliances would fall along the same lines as before. If such developments should actually come to pass, the rest of us are just along for the ride I fear. If only the ride was to a happier destination.

  • And Mickey Mouse Has Deadly Ray Gun

That people like Jim DeMint exist is no surprise. That they can speak freely on topics about which they appear to know little is one of the blessings of our democracy. That they get elected to office speaks freely to our foolishness. The he accused Democrats is no surprise, he is a demonizer from way back. What was more interesting in his speach was that he has an intellegence apparatus that is more effective and efficient than that at the calling of W and crew. From "The State":

"During a luncheon speech to 100 constituents in Spartanburg, DeMint also took issue with the now widespread belief that Saddam Hussein had no weapons of mass destruction, saying the executed Iraqi dictator had “stockpiles of chemical weapons” that still exist."

So, Senator Jim, want to disclose where Osama's hiding as well?

  • Wrote a letter to his office

Saying that his comments bordered on fascist and that if he truly believes that our right to debate, that 60% of the American people's right to have their voice heard, that our right to address our grievances to government is killing our troops, that he's a poor excuse for a US Senator.
