This is as bad as it gets. Rolling over to this sociopath with his 30 percent approval as more and more die. There's really nothing to add.

  • It doesn't matter what the bogus "reasons" are . . .

. . . apparently these gutless bastards have forgotten the elections in November 06 were about two (2) things:

    1. Getting the fuck out of Iraq; and

    2. Forcing the sociopathic liar George Walker Bush to face constitutionally mandated congressional oversight.

Now, the Democrats have done exactly what they did before when they sacrificed principle in order to protect themselves by voting to Authorize the Use of Military Force by the Imbecile-in-Chief.

Great is the shame, and many will share in it.

  • Participate

I have just called my Congressman and asked him vote against any watered-down position that gives Bush a blank check. I urge other readers to take similar action.

  • A Neville Chamberlain moment

Not since the infamous "peace in our time" agreement has political leadership shown such a lack of astuteness or an apparent inability to stand tall when faced with an obdurate foe. They were elected with a mandate to end this bloody, foolish war and they have wilted at a time when the polls show they have the support of the majority of Americans. I am ashamed of my party and they should be ashamed of themselves!

  • Congress Toads

I let my congressman know how I feel on issues. The problem is that he's a Republican Bush toadie and doesn't care how I feel. Hopefully next election will be a turning point in my district. That last election was very close.

  • Oh, how I miss hearing ONE VOICE right now...

...and that would be the late, beloved Molly Ivins.

Her reaction to the abject collapse of Democrats before the Current Occupant, like a school of spineless jellyfish, would have generated some of the most caustic comments ever put into print.

If only we had a successor to Molly as a plain-spoken speaker of truth to power...these Democrats obviously need her "two-by-four" sensibility applied to their collective heads, after which THEY would give our reluctant mule of a President the same treatment.

  • IRAQ

Unfortunately for the soldiers, the Dems have to play politics with this. HOWEVER it's not like voters didn't elect Bush twice. It's going to take time to change the policy.

But what's important for the 2008 election is that Bush and the Repubs still own the war. Failure is theirs. And do we expect things to change?

MEANWHILE, let's get Gonzo and Rovinghands on the unemployment line and insure the next election is as honest as possible.

Make NO mistake. These guys have to go ASAP.

  • Bush's new poodle

By agreeing to this so-called "compromise" Congress has just given Bush enough money to keep our soldiers in Iraq with no protections to ensure they are properly trained, adequately equipped, not overextended, all for a mission with no discernable goal and no recognizable end in sight.

How is that supporting the troops?

  • Real Leaders

In less than five months, with slim majorities in the House and Senate, Democratic leaders have forced Pres. Bush to veto a funding bill for the troops ("you either support them or you don't"), and requires him and his Republican followers to sign onto a bill putting the responsibility for the Iraq policy squarely on them. The bill also provides 20-plus billion in sorely needed spending to Democratic constituencies, such as wage earners, small farmers and businesses. Speaker Pelosi and Leader Reid have also managed to set a real political deadline of September in the Congress' and the public's attention for measuring Iraq's military and political progress toward national stability. It will be much more difficult for Pres. Bush and Republican followers to defy national opinion if conditions have not clearly improved by then. The Democratic Leadership is making steady progress in unifying the Party and the Country toward a responsible end to ineffective military fighting while some civilian authority still exists before the Green Zone is overrun and the Bush-GOP-New-Way-Forward ends in a rout.

  • vindication

As an overt republican, I've taken a lot of personal attacks by people accusing me of supporting bush and the war. My defense has always been that it doesn't matter because the democrats won't do anything about it anyway.

In other words, the two party system gives a choice between sacks of shit and spineless sacks of shit. I'll take the vertebral smelly bags please.

BTW, I'm requesting my republican congress person to support the troops by not supporting the president. She's getting receptive.

The war won't be an issue next election because both parties will do the same thing. Bush will be gone and they'll slowly pull our troops out.

  • No heroes here, move along....

In history there are times when events juxtapose and an opportunity presents itself for mortal men or women to transcend self preservation and take action that demonstrates strength, resolve or, dare I say, statesmanship. The great ones rise to the occasion while the not-so-great fall in line and become historical footnotes.

We have few budding Patrick Henrys currently in the Senate or the House. Neville Chamberlains? We have a cartload.

  • They lost me

I vote straight 3rd party from now on. they're no better than the Republicans, and in some ways, thier limp-dicked spinelessness makes them worse.

I have written my senators and representative (that's you Mr. emanuel) and told them they lost any future vote from me.

It really is time for a viable 3rd party.

  • They're tough as nails here at Salon though

    Bloggers of the World Unite!

  • I gotta ask...

Hey, Democratic leadership - you are doing a heckuva job! Remind me, though, if you would...just whose side are you on? Cause the last time I checked not only your constituency but a nice slice of the Republican constituency wanted clear, firm action to end this war. Instead, we have a House speaker who "likely" won't vote for this bill. We have a Senate majority leader who is satisfied with "extremely weak" measures to get George Bush to "report back" to Congress. That's right; the leader of the Democrats in the Senate thinks that a President who has been illegally wiretapping Americans in violation of the law for five years, who presided over the gutting of the Justice Dept., who has embraced any and every secrecy measure he could think of (often just for hell of it, apparently), who lied us into war, is going to be forced into "reporting back" to Congress by "extremely weak" measures.

Oh yeah - one HECK of a job!
