"I stand by Al Gonzales"

The letters thread is now closed.

Wait a minute.

Commander Codpiece is calling Congress actors on the "politcal theater stage"?? The party of Reagan and Fred Thompson is actually making that statement?

Spin spin spin

Monday, May 21, 2007 10:16 AM

Done for the Gipper?

as opposed to figuring how to be actors on the political theater stage.

Like Ronald Reagan? And here all the GOP candidates for 2008 are busy invoking Reagan, and Bush's deriding political theater -- guess they only like political theater when it suits them, as ever. Lame duck quacking.

"Let my Attorney General get back to vital work of protecting me from the consequences of my own lawless administration!"

W in denial

Yes, Gonzales appeared before Congress -- but he couldn't remember anything. What little he could remember were things he claimed not to be involved in. Where does the buck stop at Justice?

So, he is either hopelessly incompetent or he has comitted perjury. Either way, W should face reality.

Monday, May 21, 2007 10:23 AM

He soon will be standing by Gonzales

in Leavenworth if there is any justice left in the world.

"He hasn't done anything wrong"

I guess Bush must have the same memory problems that Gonzales has.

It was last week that Comey testified about the hospital visit, which in all likelihood was illegal.

Firing 9 US prosecutors for no good reason besides political payback is not a good enough reason?

He's lied before Congress, and we will shortly see (when Monica Goodling testifies) how much lying he did.

The no-confidence vote has to be done this week-we can't let Congress escape this travesty so easily.

Remove the SOB before he does any more damage!

Question

Does congress have the power to undo the appointments of USAs like Tim Griffin and Rachel Paulose?

Monday, May 21, 2007 10:41 AM

You Bush-Bashers just don't understand!

The ONLY reason for resignation, firing, impeachment, etc. in the eyes of the new-millenium GOP is getting involved in a sex scandal! Who cares about following the laws, honoring the public's trust, upholding the Constitution, etc.? Boring! No, unless there's a horny intern involved in this somewhere, nobody's going nowhere...

As If there is Something Wrong with "Political Theater"

I always love the accusation of "political theater" whenever I here it. In theater, the plays with political points are some of the best around. Saying that something is "political theater" really means that it's being done with high art.

It's just more of Bush's ignorance showing.

Bush ain't doing Gonzo (or himself) any favors...

..with comments like this.

Does he really think that a statement like this -- so at odds with observable reality -- will actually convince rational people to rethink their (overwhelmingly negative) opinions of the AG?

Yet he continues to make comments like these, which only succeed in making GWB look even more like a man who:

a) has absolutely no standards or judgement

b) has lost all contact with anything resembling reality

George, you're not helping Gonzo (who is beyond help, on so many personal and professional levels). You're only hurting yourself.

So keep up the good work. You've met the enemy, and he is yourself.

Monday, May 21, 2007 10:49 AM

He's got it backwards. Surprise!

And it is this kind of political theater that has caused the American people to lose confidence in how Washington operates.

Actually, Mr. President, it's exactly THIS</>kind of political theater that is restoring the American's people faith in how Washington operates.

Monday, May 21, 2007 11:17 AM

pure stonewalling

This will end like Nixon: with a pardon or two or three. Gonzo will eventually leave (resignation or impeachment), but the administration will drag this out so Gonzo can draw the fire for as long as possible. The administration doesn't want a replacement AG who might appoint a special prosecutor (or aid the on-going investigations in any way).

The Democrats will continue to investigate all of these matters and then Gonzo will be pardoned by January 2009.

If they have committed felonies, the end game for the president and the vice-president will be to avoid getting convicted themselves.

Pres will pardon the veep, then resign and get pardoned by the next Gerald Ford, or maybe there will be some tragedy that will overtake all of this.

"Political Theater"

A phrase right out of the GOPAC/Gingrich/Languagmatters playbook.

Monday, May 21, 2007 11:21 AM

I stand by Al, too...

Now, if someone would just kneel down behind him so that I could push him over like in Junior High. A pirate ship and a plank would also do.

Monday, May 21, 2007 11:23 AM

I understand why he's upset by this type of political theater

Of all people, Bush has perfected the art of political theater, and even made a career out of it. So for him to watch these "amateurs" in Congress go at it to no effect whatsoever, it must be painful for him to watch. Kind of how it's painful for us to watch him try to speak the English language in complete sentences.

Monday, May 21, 2007 11:37 AM

As they say:

Birds of a feather...

Monday, May 21, 2007 12:02 PM

can you feel the love?

I don't know why my stomach turns every time Bush makes another one of his blatantly hypocritical statements like Democrats engaging in political theater, etc. You'd think that I'd be used to it by now.

Anyway, maybe it's just me, but any time Bush stands up for one of his cronies, all I can think of, over and over again is:

"Heck of a job, Brownie!"

Monday, May 21, 2007 12:03 PM

My personal worst-case scenario

Pres will pardon the veep, then resign and get pardoned by the next Gerald Ford,

Not necessary. Bush issues blanket pardon and resigns the day before new administration comes in. Cheney is now President, and pardons Bush. They all go off into the sunset together.

Yeah, it sucks, but it could happen.

The Inevitable Response From the Eunuch Party (f.k.a. the Democrats)

Here's a paraphrase of what we'll inevitably get in response from the Eunuch Party (f.k.a. the Democrats):

"With all due respect, Mr. President, we can't toally agree with that assessement. When Attorney General Gonzales sat smirking during his Congressional testimony and essentially told us to go fuck ourselves, it made us believe that perhaps he did do something wrong. We don't want to go fuck ourselves, so we'd greatly appreciate it if you could please compromise with us. Do you think you could see your way to let Karl Rove and Harriet Miers testify about this matter too (under such circumstances, of course, as don't inconvenience them too much)? If that isn't completely agreeable to you, Mr. President, rest assured that we will quickly back down from this "demand" and immediately accede to whatever imperious demands and conditions you place on such testimony. We sure do appreciate this type of bipartisan coooperation; after all, we're all on the same side, aren't we?
