Bush just being consistent
I don't think Bush is saying "screw you" by supporting Gonzales. He's simply doing what he always does. If there's a bad decision available to be made, he makes it.

Clearly, as long as the Attorney General doesn't confess before Congress to the commission of an actual felony, he retains the full confidence of the President. It's the same standard that was applied to Libby, Rove and others involved in the Plame affair. Why the surprise?

He is the kind of guy who if you slap his mug on a Democratic fundraising letter, makes people grab for their checkbooks.
The only people who want Gonzo really gone are the Republicans who will be continued to be embarrassed by him.

"and answered every question he could possibly answer". The dude could not recall any details about a meeting with the president at which this politically sensitive topic was discussed. If one of my subordinates cannot recall such an important meeting with me, I would ask which box they would like for me check on reasons for dismissal, "Liar" or "Incompetent". And then hand them the pink slip and move on.

Bush would be a great boss
I can only say I wish that all my bosses were like Bush. As long as I remained the good and honorable person that I am (really!), and didn't commit a felony, I could keep my job! I'm tired of actually having to 'work' and have that 'work' judged for 'competence.' Isn't it good enough that I'm a nice person?

The fact that Bush believes "This is an honest and honorable man in whom I have confidence" tells us much more about Bush than anything.
A torture-promoting, lying, memory-like-a-sieve, Peter Principle poster-child like Gonzalez is honest and honorable, and merits being our nation's highest law enforcement official.

It's not just that poor Alberto "answered every question he could possibly answer" that's funny. It's the qualifier:
answered every question he could possibly answer, honestly answer
You see, the questions he fudged on were the ones he couldn't answer honestly -- the ones he'd have to lie about. The hilarity is magnified by
he answered as honestly as he could.
implying that, for this AG, honesty is not something that comes easily. He has to work at it.

the dems are in the middle of a witch hunt where they are looking for anything that can be remotely construed as illegal. If they only wanted to talk about whether it was handled with the proper decorum then the hearings would never happen.
He's a poor manager that has an opposing view from the dems. I know they want that to be criminal but it isn't.

The latest debacle with The Gonz is just icing on the cake -- allowing 9/11/01 to take place, refusing to testify under oath to the 9/11 Cover-Up Commission, illegal aggressive war against Iraq, murdering Hussein for killing 150 Iraqis..??
Why is Bush still in office? If it walks like a duck, has webbed feet like a duck, quacks like a duck, gets right in your face and screams "I'M A DUCK!" -- Bush is a figurehead and ought to be removed. Right after Cheney. And Gonzales.

Well - we don't really KNOW if he violated any laws.
Funny thing - altho AGAG cannot recall any conversation, discussion, deliberation, meeting, communication, correspondence or conversation relating to the firing of 8 US Attorneys - he was able to assure the Judiciary Committee that nothing improper occurred.
Huh? How would he know?
He DOES remember making the decision to fire the Attorneygate 8 - but, as he replied to the followup question, he doesn't recall WHEN.
I personally think he's trying to set up an Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) claim that, based on some extreme form of aphasia-like workplace memory loss, a recognized medical condition. It would be illegal to terminate him due to his medical condition.

The reason that the President went out of his way to say that there were no crimes...
...is that there are so many people like all of you at Salon, saying that you think crimes were committed. The President, in this instance, is right, and all of you are wrong. I know that may come as a shock to all of you. Sorry.

when Gonzales first testified to the Senate - he said he had no discussion, deliberations or communications concerning the firing of the US attorneys . . . and we know for a fact he did - President Bush recalled one such discussion with AGAG - unless you're calling Bush the lying sack of shit he is.
Additionally, Kyle Sampson testified under oath that Gonzales was mistaken - a polite word for a lie. Once Monica Goodling is heard from - and she will be, I assure you - Gonzales' exit will be only a matter of time.

Bush's stubborn support of those who have corrupted the offices to which he has elevated them is incredible. But although his main excuse cum assertion is that they have "broken no laws"...what he really means is that no one can catch them breaking the law....given his vast network of backdoors, coverups, and slavish neobots who won't depart from the approved talking points. Deny. Deny. Deny.
Although it would be wonderful to nab them all for the actual crimes they have committed, Congress may have to be satisfied with the time-honored tactic of nailing them for lying under oath. Or tax evasion. Exactly how many dependents is Bush claiming, anyway?
Keep the subpoenas coming! Plenty for everyone!
