  • The fox guarding the chicken coop?

Gee, I wonder if one of those "forensics tools" is a Department of Defense level disk wipe that replaces every bit on a drive with a random bit--multiple times. Or perhaps melting the hard drives down in to scrap.

A special prosecutor needs to be empowered now to begin using the forensics tools that the White House claims it is using to get a handle on the email universe.

With just what is currently known, the White House cannot be trusted with any access to the backend systems involved. These should be confiscated immediately and then let the special prosecutor's team do the forensics to see what's there. They can provide copies of all the "current" data to new, secured systems that the White House may then be granted limited access to.

It is probably already be too late.

  • How can they do it?

I wonder how long it will be before this job reduces poor Ms. Perino to a burned-out shell, wandering aimlessly around her apartment in her off hours, drinking heavily and sobbing. It took out first-rate liars like Fleischer and McLellan, so odds are she'll make it about another month before needing years of therapy.

  • Backups?

Oh gee, sorry. Those were erased as well.

  • E-mails

Could the forensics that will help find the missing e-mails also be the forensics that will make sure no one else will ever see them?

  • Email trail

In all seriousness, this whole thing is ridiculous. I'm no I.T. guy, but Patrick Leahy is right; those emails are on someone's server. Which company contracts with the RNC to provide their email accounts? Find out who it is and issue subpoenas. Perhaps if the FBI could tear itself away for an hour or two from recklessly spying on the general public, maybe they could look into it.

  • I Would Be Fired for Such Answers

It chafes me to see high-profile people getting away with answers that my employers would not accept from me and still retain their jobs. It must be nice to have a big government salary, the lack of accountability, AND the kind of cronies who will help you avoid having even to worry about landing on your feet.

  • E-mail server policies regarding keeping of e-mail

http://oig.pbgc.gov/audit/2005/pdf/email_review.pdf touches on some of the e-mail preservation policies of messages on e-mail servers on the Federal level. If anything this lesson has taught us, it should be that the Federal government should require that copies of e-mails be kept into infinity. Storage prices are extremely cheap so it shouldn't be that bad. Maybe congress should do that.

Not so long ago, (I think last year) wasn't there an attempt by at least on Republican member of the House to pass legislation to require ISPs to keep copies of e-mails of all e-mail sent on their server forever?

  • One thing is for sure

you can bet your sweet ass that she wasn't lying when she said they have a "forensic" team on the case.

As far as finding the actual e-mails, I bet they get as far as O.J. has in looking for the real killers of Ron and Nicole.

  • The reasoned and responsible course of action

Would be to immediately seize Dubya, Cheney, Rice -- the whole crowd, including the PNACers who've left for other positions -- drag them all to Gitmo and torture them for at least five straight years.

Then, after 60+ months, the question of whether or not their cases have any legal standing may be addressed. Or not.

    Let's review:

    1. Seize them

    2. Torture them

    3. Torture them more

  • White House needs to spy on itself

Too bad Freud is dead. (When dealing with this WH, I had to be careful not to automatically type "FRAUD.") If Dr. Freud were still with us, he would certainly want to discuss "projection" with the Bush "administration." Why? Because they are constantly laying on others their own deep disturbance. They're so quick to spy and pry and poke and accuse because they are so FUCKING GUILTY. As well they should be. They're liars and cheats and as devious a bunch as I can remember. I'm 62 with a fair memory. Jesus God, why can't we ask for a "do over" before we have to put a sign on our country that says "OUT OF BUSINESS."

  • The answer is simple

The answer is simple for Congress:

Tell the White House to provide ALL the emails used by staffers using RNC accounts. If they are not provided, impeachment hearings for Obstruction of Justice will commence.

  • Ignorance of the Law

I REALLY hope that Congress, both Republicans and Democrats alike, don't let the Executive Branch get away with obstruction of justice in this case (and by case, I mean the purging of official White House e-mails sent on backchannel servers no matter the topic no matter how far back in time, rather than simply with respect to the Gonzales/prosecutors affair). And, if the Republicans in Congress prefer to protect the White House rather than seek the truth here, the Congressional Dems need to forge ahead and in NO CIRCUMSTANCE allow the White House to claim ignorance of the law even if that's truly the case, which is highly doubtful.

Who knows what the White House is trying to cover up? I'm sure we all have plenty of guesses. And, if all of the computer forensics are unable to turn up a trace of the back-channel e-mails, prosecute every single individual involved to the fullest extent of the law, and I hope that means extended, hard time. (It would certainly prove that they took every step necessary to cover their trails.) That is the only way these crooks will learn any sort of lesson and the only means to deter future Executive Branch members from pulling the same crap. The perpetrators in this instance should feel lucky that they'd get away that easy.

While we're on the subject, why is there not an independent government agency responsible for maintaining the government records of every branch? (As I type this, the advertisement for Joe Conason's book, "It Can Happen Here" is right next to the text box. Yes. Yes, indeed.)

  • How many laws

have to be broken by these guys before they get impeached?

  • Exemplary Conduct and the Dantian Level Seek of G.W.Bush

With the velocity and scope of Bush2WH oops! events on an ever upwards trendline it is becoming a genuine memory game keeping the scandals, omissions, evasions and law abusing/breaking acts in proper order of reveal, current status, coming status and who was caught lying or skirting the law.

Back there in early 2001,a long time ago indeed for this now long in the tooth Bush2WH the Decider clearly stated HIS WH would be an exemplar of proper conduct, legal decorum and ethical prowness. The dig being that the W.J.Clinton WH was not that. G.W.Bush was going to preside over a better, cleaner WH where the consequences of error would be met with a firm hand and a WH exit. K.Rove in particular seems to be in full exemption to this. As does D.Cheney. Evidently A.Gonzales now too. This growing list of exceptions reveals the hollowness of G.W.Bush on principle and integrity. The Iraq War/Occupation the full and complete compilation of unprincipled policy form up and dice and slice logic lines that inform G.W.Bush and infect this Bush2WH.

Late Jan.2009 seems these days a long ways off for this WH and G.W.Bush surely is headed for the Grant,Harding and Nixon level of American Presidents Dantian Hell.
