  • How this Should Play

    1) Clearly, the WH is lowballing at the start in an attempt to trade Gonzales' head to avoid on-the record testimony

    2) The DEMS cannot let that happen, as Alberto doesn't matter, and would probaby have to go anyway.

    3) The DEMS should raise such a stink about EVEN THE ATTEMPT made by the WH to get around testifying. There's so much hypocrisy here, as Tim Grieve and Glenn Greenwald and others have reminded us. (BTW, what's Lieberman's take?)

    4) I wouldn't give a dime to any DEM who wouldn't stand up to the hobbled WH at this time.

  • Why is this an issue?

US Attorneys are political appointments, who serve at the pleasure of the President. He can hire or fire them, at will, for any reason he deems appropriate. Next time Chuck Schumer fires one of his staffers, should the White House subpoena his email?

  • ain't payback just a bitch?

    Let's see here...

On the floor of the Senate, the vice president tells Patrick Leahy to go fuck himself. The exact quote, as said by the VP voted for by our most morally self-righteous citizens, was "Go fuck yourself."

Patrick Leahy is from Vermont, one of the most liberal states in the Union. Every time he confronts the administration, his popularity in the state goes up. Right now his approval rating hovers at about 178%.

Leahy has been ranking minority member for the Judiciary Committee for most of the Bush administration, forced to sit by and watch Arlen Specter roll over for the administration time and time again.

Now Leahy is chair of the Judiciary Committee. He has nothing to lose by confronting the administration. Nothing. And, when the vice president had all the power in the world, he used that power to personal invite the senator to go fuck himself.

If you were Pat Leahy, what would you do?

Can you say "subpoena the bastards?" Thought you could.

  • Political appointments

Then why didn't the White House simply say straight-forwardly "these judges are being dismissed for politic reasons" instead of concocting the bogus "performance evaluation" story? And they didn't even get that story straight. First, the WH had nothing to do with it, then it was Harriet Meirs' idea, blah, blah.

The point is that this WH has a stellar track record of trying to pull things over on the American public. If they tried to hide the real motivation for dismissing these U.S. eight attorneys, it's because they know that the real reason wouldn't be acceptable to the public. They are once again misrepresenting *how they govern* to the American people, and we have a right to know exactly how and why they are doing that.

  • Mr. Ramsey owned and operated a Gulf Oil station on West Main Street

in Kent, Ohio. He was a retired cola miner with the black lung and he could fix anything automotive. He drove a Plymouth Valiant slant-six with 275,000 miles on it - and he taught me a lot about life. And what he would say about George Bush's crack-smokin' claims of executive privilege is:

Fuck this shit - subpoena the bastards.

I seem to recall Nixon crumbling and two guys named Haldeman and Ehrlichman testifying before Sam Erwin. Why not Karl Rove?

  • Get up, stand up

Bush is a fucking paper tiger and I for one am sick to death of Congress backing down because of this "you don't defy the commander in chief during wartime" bullshit. W is a lost little boy without the spine or intellect to rescue himself, so he falls back on bluster. That's all he has.

Tell him to jam it, Democrats. Shove subpoenas up his ass and if he ignores them, threaten impeachment hearings. Then once this investigation is done, impeach anyway.

Enough is enough. And as one LW said, any Dem who tolerates this in ANY way doesn't get a dime, and should be run from office.

  • Subpoena and

    Waterboard the bastards.

  • Why This Is An Issue

Bob-you can try to repeat what remains of the lame "why is this an issue" as long as you want. This is an issue for several reasons:

    1) Can we be certain at this point that these USAs were fired in order to forestall criminal investigations/prosecutions of Republicans or Republican supporters?

    2) Who urged removal? Gonzo, Reid, or Rove? If Gonzo, not a problem. If Reid? If Rove? I think that we need a little more information; not with a closed door; but under the lights and in full view.

    3) Actually a subset of above, but the more the WH pushes back, the more I wonder what else is there. A fishing expedition is fine with me. Remember the Whitewater fishing trip that turned into hearings on a blow job?

    4) Rove/Bush/Cheney are criminals. Simple as that. They need to be stopped before the republic is destroyed.

  • Who's going to be doing the fucking now?

I can imagine it was a cathartic moment for Dick Cheney when he growled under his breath to Leahy on the Senate floor, "Go fuck yourself." For Cheney, at the height of his power and arrogance, was really telling the whole country to go fuck itself.

Although Leahy was gentleman enough, mature enough, to laugh off Cheney's childish outburst, I'm sure he didn't forget it.

Oh yes, Mr. Cheney. You're going to be saying that word a whole lot in the coming 20 months. Only it's likely to come out of your twisted mouth as, "I fucked myself," and "George, we're fucked!"

And now, let the fucking begin!

  • What is the White House afraid of?

For the last five years I've been hearing that we shouldn't be afraid to have the government read our mail, tap our phoes, search our houses without our knowledge or intercept our e-mails "as long as you have nothing to be afraid of."

OK, so, what is the WHite House afraid of in having people testify under oath if they haven't doen anyting wrong? And I think we all know what the answer to that question is.

  • No Mercy

Thanks, Pen Ultimate, for the reassurance about Leahy (only 178 percent approval?)

Just a few weeks ago, I was terrified and dismayed by the many letters from liberals in this forum bleating "we're the nice guys, and we don't do nasty things like subpoenas and real investigations. Can't we all just get along?"

Very, very glad to see that those letter writers have either fallen silent or seen the light.

You cannot negotiate with bullies. You cannot talk reasonably with bullies. You don't have to launch unprovoked lethal attacks on their civilian populations, but you do have stand firm and hold them to the rule of law.

The Usurper, his minions and the republicans have been bullying this nation and the world long enough.

Far past time to slap them down hard.
