White House bats down Cheney resignation talk

The letters thread is now closed.

Rummy got the same speech

I seem to recall Secretary Rumsfeld getting similar reassurances, less than a week before he was shown the door.

This is the same White House...

...that told us about the Nigerian yellowcake and WMD in the first place. We have known for quite awhile that we cannot rely on anything said by this administration.

I, like so many people all over the world, wish Cheney would resign but I am not betting on it.

Uh-oh! Heckuva job, Dicky!

I wouldn't believe that Cheney would resign unless, of course, it was a move to install a fresher Republican Veep.

Until I saw the White House denial that there's no way he'll resign. Sort of like the time McGovern was "1,000 percent behind" the late Tom Eagleton.

Why...

would he resign? He didn't do anything wrong. If he had Fitzgerald would have brought charges.

#@$#%^ Cheney is not an "aide", he's #@$#@ second in line for the @#@$# presidency ....

and he does not "serve at the pleasure of the president" ... for god's sake ... Libby served "at the pleasure" ... Cheney was elected by the same bastardized process as brought us George W Bush ...

These guys' failure to understand how our government was set up to run is scary on a daily basis.

Not Now and Not Ever

Let's face it, even Bush must know that a lot of people don't want any part of impeaching him solely because 2 years of President Cheney would be even worse than 2 more years of President Bush! In fact, Dick Cheney's leg could swell up to the size of the Hindenburg with blood clots rocketing toward his heart at the rate of one an hour and every member of Cheney's staff could get indicted for God only knows what and Bush will be insisting that there's no need for Dick Cheney to resign. (Hell, he's probably got a look-alike Cheney stashed somewhere in case the original croaks.)

Joe, SURELY you remember Nixon, the "unindicted co-conspirator"

It's well-accepted that presidents (and by extension, vice presidents) are essentially immune from normal criminal procedures -- that they are only subject to impeachment while in office.

Just because charges aren't brought against a person doesn't mean charges aren't warranted -- it often simply means that a conviction couldn't be achieved, for a variety of reasons (including the one suggested above).

How many truly believe that control freak Cheney was NOT pulling Libby's strings throughout this entire Plame affair? Libby IS the fall guy for all of this, and since he's maintained his story throughout, in the end he's succeeded in protecting his boss.

Yeah, I was about to say

Hm. I've not been keeping track: has anyone even called for Cheney's resignation? It's what a former co-worker of mine used to call the BSG-2000 ("BSG" = bullshit generator), when you get the "everything is fine" speech from the leadership even though nobody is worried just yet. And as was noted before, we heard this about Rumsfeld as well as some minor officials.

I would sell a valuable organ if only that would buy a proper trial of the whole junta (Junior, Cheney and the rest) that got us into this mess and would guarantee them a conviction for their crimes and a nice long sojourn in Guantanamo Bay. With the right of habeus corpus, of course. We don't want to become them, per se, do we?

Perhaps George W's

support of the real president, Cheney, will end up much like his unyielding support for that jackass Rumsfeld. George is starting to sound like another famous George: George Steinbrenner. Everytime he publically supported one of his embattled Yankees coaches they somehow lasted for only another five game losing streak and then:Whamo!

If these Dems get some balls and subpoena Cheney for his nihilistic role in the lies leading up to the war watch how fast Georgie-poo rids himself of yet another legacy albatross.

Keep Cheney right where he is.

Cheney's approval ratings are in the toilet. The only good he does is staying put in the VP's office, where he will be a constant reminder of all that is wrong with the Bush Misadministration. Besides, with Cheney's evil butt in the VP position, there will be no heir apparent to Bush. That leaves the assorted horrors running for the GOP nomination to shred each other's repuations and thus ease the way for a Democrat in 2008.

This possibility might cause a lot of liberal folk to suddenly rediscover the power of prayer ;*)

But hey, in the meantime y'all can use this if you want:

DVT...

One only has to look at the character of Mr. Cheny and his many health issues and realize that a man that has had that many heart attacks and other major health issues and now had a DVT problem isn't healthy enough to be Vice President of anything other than the Spanky McFarland Fan Club...

I'd also like to point out that he has probably had a few strokes and that would explain his major bad mood that only seems to have gotten worse in the past 4 or so years. A stroke can also explain his reality disassociation illness that has a relentless grip on his addled brain...

Cheney is sick. Only a PET and CT scan can show the extent of his brain damage.

I don't think there is a question in my mind that Dick Cheney should not be anywhere near the button for thermonuclear war... He has nothing to lose...
