The Explosion
Just a little message that tells Cheney that the Taliban is still here.
-
Lucky the PREVIOUS War Room item's title wasn't re-used!
"Just giving the people what they want"
That's about the blackest humor I can tolerate this early in the morning...sadly, though, having Cheney leave the scene wouldn't sadden many people who care about this country and its future!
-
Must mean we're winning!
Somehow or other, this obviously shows that we're winning and things in Afghanistan, as in Iraq, are going just ducky.
-
CHENEY ESCAPES
TOO BAD!!
-
Blame game
I wonder how Bu$hco is going to turn this around and find someway to blame Iran?
-
Karma...
Cheney should have stuck his head out of his bunker and shouted at them "Hey! I had other priorities today!"
-
How did they know Cheney was unhurt?
They certainly weren't looking for a pulse. Bad attempt at humor. Sorry.
However, what no one mentions is that this was suppose to be a secret visit, but apparently the Taliban not only knew about it, but had enough time to plan a suicide bombing.
That doesn't bode well for our mission in Afghanistan.
-
"Collateral Damage"
One wonders when we might expect some words of regret or condolences from Cheney about the innocent bystanders who were killed in what we understand was an assassination attempt against him. According to some reports, in addition to some 20 Pakistani workers, there was an American serviceman and a contractor. Endangering others for the sake of a photo-op is something that at least ought to be taken into consideration.
I've seen no mention from him of the lives lost due to his presence. Surely, he knows he's a "terrorist magnet". That entails some responsibility on his part, it seems to me.

Microcosm of the neocons' war
Other people die while the chickenhawks stay safe.
I'm not hoping for the rat bastards in charge to die, but this little incident reminds me of the time that Wolfowitz was in Iraq and his hotel was bombed. He walked away, but at least one US serviceman was killed - along with a number of Iraqis, IIRC. That may be the strongest argument I've ever encountered that there is no God, or at least justice.
I'm fully aware that not everyone serving in the military is a paragon of virtue, especially after they've been sent into a hellhole. As with cops, any job that provides a gun and power attracts some people who shouldn't have either, and not all of them are screened out. But having said that, I believe that every single one of the thousands of dead and wounded "coalition" troops - and Afghan and Iraqi civillian casualties - are better human beings than the lying, treasonous scumbags that "led" us into Iraq and their sycophants in Congress and the media.

The draft evader finally sees some action
I have to disagree with the posters who wish he'd died. Emotionally that would be satisfying, but as one of the bloggers in today's blog report reminds us, that would have made him a martyr and boosted Bush's popularity. It's infuriating, unfair and illogical, but every failure by this administration to protect the people somehow makes them heroes.
Still, it would have been nice if Cheney had gotten, oh, say, a little shrapnel in his face. For one thing, if he's still capable of rational thought it might have given him a little concrete evidence about the nature of our "tremendous successes" in the Middle East. For another, it's high time Mr. 5 Draft Deferments Other Priorities Cheney, who would like to rule the world from a secure bunker at an undisclosed location, saw what combat actually means to the people who actually fight it.

from stents to stunts....
> this was suppose to be a secret visit, but apparently
> the Taliban not only knew about it, but had enough
> time to plan a suicide bombing.
Pah, it was probably Cheney's people who exploded the bomb to make their boss look like he was in danger. Purely a PR stunt to grow support.
-
What really happened
Actually I think some damn fool let the VP go hunting and it went tragically wrong (again). The bombing is just the cover story.

Russ H
"That entails some responsibility on his part"
Thanks for the laugh! This is W and Cheney's "Responsibility Era", which means that they'll accept responsibility as long as there is no blame or accountability.
Besides, Cheney probably expects the families of the victims to apologize for them being in the wrong place and time, just like his hunting companions.
-
The Brighter Side
Thank God Cheney was unhurt! The nattering neocons would now be beating their breasts and howling for vengeance on a scale unheard of even in the aftermath of 9/11. As it is, the grumbling we will hear will be tedious enough.
And strange indeed how the Taliban knew of this "secret" visit and yet could only arrange an attack when Cheney was least vulnerable.
-
Correction
I just realized my post referred to Pakistan, and not Afghanistan, where the Cheny incident occurred. Of course, the sentiment expressed still applies with equal force.
-
Wait a minute...
Shrouded in secrecy? How did the suicide bomber know where he was and have time to prepare and execute an attack? This had to be a publicity stunt. Cheney wants to be a wartime icon, like TR charging up San Juan Hill or some crap.
-
Does this mean
that we're finally going to stop giving millions to our (new best) friends the Pakistanis? The elites in Pakistan's military and intelligence agencies are dominated by Taliban and al-Quada sympathizers. They hate the US and they hate our puppet, Musharref. I'll bet you my last dollar that the info of Cheney's whereabouts came from them.
Keep in mind, that the purpose of Cheney's visit to Pakistan was to maumau Musharref into cracking down on the safe haven he has given the Taliban and al-Quada.
Poor Musharref. He's getting it coming and going. I've lost count of the number of attempts on his life. I bet he doesn't last until the 2008 election.
-
Well it's a
nice little reminder to the American populace that we're losing two wars, not one! In five years, will any of the claims by this administration hold true?
-
Is that what he uses to hunt quail now?
I hear airstrikes work great for taking out deer.
-
Too bad
the people who he's bombed, and their families, didn't have the same luck...
