CONFUSED READER ASKS...
So... forgive me if the answer to this question is already clearly established BUT... if Cheny's office was trying to say that Mr. Wilson's covert CIA operative wife sent him on this trip and not Cheney himself... who actually did send Mr. Wislon to Niger?

An out for Scooter?
But if Ari has now testified under oath that he said more than he actually did, does this give Libby's lawyers a better chance to impugn his credibility (or at least his memory)? Perhaps this is a variation on the "witness for the prosecution" motif? Or is that all just too complicated and improbable?

Wilson trip
edittv
I've been following the trial and so far it looks like at a daily briefing the vice-president's office asked about Saddam's looking into nuclear capabilities. The CIA person who briefed the Vice President saw the question as a "task".
The CIA briefer went back to the CIA with this and they sent Wilson as the expert. It sounds like Wilson's wife recommended him, she worked in the department of counter proliferation, though the Vice President's office didn't know that at the time.
This allows Cheney to say he had no idea who Wilson was and he didn't send him to be technically true. And allows Wilson to say the Vice President sent him to be technically true.

Could Fleischer Be Protecting Libby?
Is it possible that Fleischer is protecting both himself and Libby from the far more serious charges of actually knowingly leaking the name of a covert agent by making it look as he was the one who gave out the names to reporters, rather then Libby? After all, Fleischer, who has immunity has nothing to loose by taking the blame. Libby on the other hand, might reasonably expect that if he is convicted off lying to investigators, he may next find himself on trial for the actual leak.

Another confused reader asks...
... what about the forged documents? Like the CBS Rathergate incident, we never seem to hear or even investigate who forged the documents in the first place. Isn't that really an important issue? Who wanted to convince the US to invade Iraq and therefore had an interest in forging those documents? There's a whole host of suspects, but we have not heard anything about it, have we?

My Bullshit Meter Says.......BULLSHIT
I have to be honest, I don't even trust the journalists who have been involved in this anymore. Dickerson could simply be covering his ass by perpetuating the story he's been selling thus far.
While some journalists may have truly concealed their sources for the purpose of "journalistic integrity," many of them merely wanted to keep their cozy relationships with these senior administration officials for career purposes.
These guys aren't journalists, they're enablers.

To me, it's Ari Fleischer falling on his sword
. . .only it's a rubber sword.
"I did it! I did it! I'm the one who accidentally leaked the name. Only now you can't do anything because I have immunity."
Call me cynical.

I assure you that nobody is protecting Libby !
Everyone is protecting the president and vice president. You know, the guys who ran two campaigns on a platform of accountability.
The way Bush/Cheney blame everyone else for everything makes it easy to forget that they are actually the ones in charge and who should be held to account.
If these guys are the CEOs of the country, our citizenry is the lamest board of directors in history.
