Was McCoin really sleeping during the SOTU?
I think the old man is about ready for the big dirt nap myself. If he can't stay awake in public, think how he'd do as president.

More Like A McCain Backpedal
There isn't enough backpedaling on this obsurdly hawkish stance he's taken that will stand up against what will be overwhelming criticism in the '08 primaries. While McCain is travelling backwards politically, he's probably rolling over his frontrunner status for the prez. nomination.. Maybe Bob Dole wants to take another crack at it?? He'll probably stand a better chance at winning the election this point.

no integrity
after the way McCain lied about Clinton's negotiations with the North Koreans (in the wake of the Korean nuke-test), the man doesn't have any integrity left. He's just blowing in the wind like everyone else.
Is not the GOP still a radical right-wing party? Is it not the case that the people who will select the GOP nominee for President are the very *base* Bush is still kneeling to in his speech and action?
If so...then McCain's position makes perfect sense. He wants to be the GOP nominee for Prez. How he escapes the idiot positions he'll have to take to get that nomination, though, will be something to see. Or not. Maybe he won't even bother to try to escape. He may just ignore what he says in the primaries, as he moves on to the general. It's been done before.
But, make no mistake, he's angling for the GOP nomination, and everything he says and does from this point on will be in service to that goal.

Could be good
This is obviously McCain trying to save his political ass, but that may actually be good for the country. If Congress sets up legit benchmarks, and Iraq doesn't meet them, then it is good oversight, and it ensures that Bush's plan either works, or Congress gets us out.
It may be a good political move for McCain, but hell, that's better than the alternative of having no oversight and Bush doing whatever the hell he wants. I'm sure McCain would get nearly unanimous support for such a proposal. Bush can thumb his nose as a non-veto proof majority of Democrats and a few Republicans, but he couldn't ignore a nearly unanimous Senate.

Good idea, that: "we're not holding our breath"
McCain's going to try and appear "statesmanlike", and get the undeserved fauning of the mainstream press (see MSM coverage of the torture bill) but little will change, except maybe McCain's poll numbers. Consequences for benchmarks not being met? McCain will never agree to that. If he does, he truly is delusional, because he must know that the Iraqis aren't in any shape to meet any meaningful benchmarks, so why would he put himself in that position?

Won't be around in 2008
I would bet serious money that John McCain will self-destruct long before the 2008 presidential election. What was the question everybody always asked Forrest Gump?
The GOP worked hard a few years ago to insinuate that McCain was off his rocker due to the trauma of the Hanoi Hilton. But in fact, he's just a numbskull.

Benchmarks, smechmarks.
Nobody, absolutly nobody is saying anything about what they will do or act-on/enforce if these"benchmarks" are not met. It's always like Moe of the Three Stooges saying: "...oh yeh? why I otta..." But actually never following up. So loudmouth pols from both sides of the isle, what is "Plan B"? Benchmarks, accountability, and follow-up are not in the Decider, or the V.P. of Other Priorities, vernacular. For that matter anyone elses either.
All we hear is that if the Iraqui guys don't get their stuff together we'll, we'll, why we otta...we otta what?

Benchmarks and Consequences
Anybody who is still rational and is in favor of the surge (stop laughing), must be willing to state clearly:
- several easy-to-measure numbers or criteria, with specific dates, to see if this surge is working. And none of the specific dates can be in or after January 2009 when Bush implements his own exit strategy. No more moving the goalposts, no more We'll Have To See Over The Next Several Months.... (Maybe pass/fail, or maybe a point system or grades A thru F, but something that can't be wiggled out of or argued away after obvious failure.)
- a specific Plan B if it fails. And the courage to implement Plan B, to swing the axe if needed. (Or several plans for whatever grade or number of points.)
If we can't get any pro-surge people to agree to the above, then Gonggg, it's time for Impeachment cuz the inmates are running the assylum.
This is not rocket science. This is standard Management 101, How to Get Things Done. Millions of Americans follow the above steps all the time, leading their groups to great success. It's time we had some management at the top.

McCain's goose is...
...cooked and burned. He can't backpedal or flipflop his way to the presidency. He has revealed himself for what he is and has come to be, just another lightheaded Bushie. McCain has lost all creds, only some of the rethug dummies will vote for him, those who sell their religion for politics and their politics for their so called and self styled religious beliefs.
Many from the right wing religious nut camp can see McCain for what he truly is, as he sucked up to Falwell.McCain can't run America, nor can Falwell, nor can the pope and I see no one in the rethug party who can do the job.
The rethugs will have to resurrect some dead horse from the past as they always do(Cheney, Rumsfeld)only Jeb is left and he being another member of the Bush Family is totally contaminated, I hope.
Can Rove spin the heads of the voters yet again, I doubt it, after 2006.
It will be interesting and fun watching who and how they spin up to the 2008 election.
