  • Fox

those hack waterheads at Fox really take the cake.

"ego-driven power trip." Sounds like an accurate description of the Iraq war. Will we see this phrase used in that connection any time soon?

I know, I know, Fox was designed for a certain idiot segment of the American public...but still. If hypocrisy smelled like pig-shit, you couldn't get within 10 miles of the Fox studios.

  • First order of business: Cat In the Hat

A sight we're already tired of seeing: We know that Nancy Pelosi is a grandmother and, as CNN's Andrea Koppel reported, "the highest-ranking female woman ever to hold political office." But does she really have to keep proving her motherly cred by saying things like, "We're here for the children"?

I actually enjoyed seeing those kids invited up to the Speaker's desk.

And it could very well be one of the most brilliant moves in the history of politics. I mean at the very least it momentarily stopped the Republicans from immediately sticking a knife into Pelosi's back.

  • Grandmother cred

OK, get used to it. When good women have real power in government, the concern for the next (and next) generation gets attention. Let's hope it isn't too late to "do it for the children." That is exactly the focus that has been missing in our misuse of the environment, in waging needless war, in greedy short-gain capitalism. If we don't do it for the children, what future do we have?

  • Redundancy?

...as CNN's Andrea Koppel reported, "the highest-ranking female woman ever to hold political office."

What other types of women, besides female, have held political office?

  • Fox News Crawl

You forgot to mention that the news crawl represented almost the entirety of Fox News' coverage of the event.

    What did they cover?:

Ivy League Prof Leading Suspect in Wife’s Death.

    Missing cows.

    Missing sailors.

    Miers quits.

    Cindy Sheehan doesn't.

If Madame Speaker had spoke five minutes longer, they'd probably would have shown another story on Britney's cooter.

  • On Grandmother cred

    From Phoebe:

    OK, get used to it.

I welcome it, look forward to it, and already feel better.

Watching the ceremony, I suddenly realized how long it had been since I had looked at the person occupying that desk and felt a sense of hope.

We must band together and confront the people who try to do harm to Speaker Pelosi, and knowingly attempt to sabotage her efforts. Just absolutely refuse to tolerate it, or take it lying down.

Our pathetic president has the gall to demand our support, and call us un-American if we don't jump to a height that pleases him.

The least people can do for the Speaker is to stay the hell out of her way, while she cleans up little George's big mess.

  • "We're here for the children"

At least when Pelosi said it, she was talking about helping the children.

If Dick Cheney said it, he might be looking for something to eat.

  • A sight I'm afraid we won't see

Democrats with enough money to put their agenda into action. The credit card financing that allowed us to start this lovely little civil war in Iraq is going to have to be paid off. If the bank (foreign lenders) decide they don't want to up our credit limit, we'll be left with a lot of sweet-sounding rhetoric from the new congress and not much else.

  • Women of the world arise, you have nothing to lose but your chains

as CNN's Andrea Koppel reported, "the highest-ranking female woman ever to hold political office."

I'm sure if I had the full quote it would make it clear that was a reference to the US only. Which would make it accurate, but still rather disheartening don't you think?

Gandhi, Meir, Thatcher, Aquino, Bhutto, Chamorro, Merkel, and scores more around the world. Even up here in Canada- Kim Campbell ( You would think the name alone would disqualify her from being Prime Minister). And these are all Prime Ministers and heads of government, not merely Majority Leader in the House of Representatives in a system that has a Senate leader and a President as well.

But no, this is not a call to arms for Clinton for President. Even more depressing than your record re women in high office, is the fact that, as allegedly the most vibrant democracy on the face of the Earth, in a country with more than 300,000,000 citizens you are seriously considering the possibility of a succession of Bush*, Clinton**, Bush*, Clinton**. I thought you fought the American Revolution to overthrow the monarchy.

  • Mentioning Children

Maybe Nancy Pelosi keeps mentioning children and the future because unlike the Republicans, the Democrats actually care about providing healthcare, environmental programs, and education to ensure that children have a future. Don't be so sexist to assume that because she's a woman she always talks about children. Maybe its because she's a liberal.

  • Not sick of it!

Actually, what I'm sick of seeing and hearing is the lie that Democrats and/or liberals don't stand for anything, that we don't have any principles or values. Today we saw Speaker Pelosi calling the House to order, surrounded by what she stands for: hope for the future, represented by our nation's children. It was a magnificent moment.

Yes, now it's time to get specific and concrete. But it was wonderful to see, just for a moment and right at the beginning: the liberal ideal embodied, with no apologies in sight. Wahooo!

  • Negroponte moves over to State

Headlines at the cable nooose outlets seem to be perplexed about why John Negroponte would step down from his Spook-wrangling job, trying to get the CIA and the FBI to play nice with each other.

Short answer: As expected he failed.

Hidden agenda answer: Negroponte went to serve as deputy Sec of State under Condo Rice because she is fixing to bail out. Then Negroponte can be appointed as "interim" Sec of State without Senate approval.

Extra point question: What will Condo do? Will she try to run for POTUS?

  • A Golden Opportunity

Forget whining, Patrick McHenry and his fellow Rethuglicans should instead PRAY that the Dems don't beat them into the ground with their own tactics.

This is a golden opportunity for McHenry and his ilk to prove that they are truly "God's Party" by getting down on their knees and praying as hard as they can that everything they visited on the previous minority party isn't brought back upon them N-fold.
