  • Having It Both Ways

Funny how Cheney was one of the primary architects of the war and leaves Bush to fend off critics. I guess that's make one more deferment for the man who "has other priorities." I also suspect Cheney is avoiding the criticism of his daughter's pregnancy. Once public memory has sufficiently lapsed, he will be back in attack dog mode, explaining why the administration intends to ignore the ISG's recommendations.

  • Bush and Cheney

They're like spoiled brats who broke their toy and now want to pretend it didn't happen.

The Decider can't decide and the Puppet Master wants to cut the strings.

  • "Well, he's listening and asking some questions, and he's participating in the conversations..."

Honest, I swear that this sounds exactly like the description of a stroke victim!

(I say that with no malice towards those who actually do go through that particular hell.)

  • What about the baby?

Could have something to do with Mary's baby. Maybe he's trying to stay out of the public eye, what with the Religious Right all pissed off at his family for having a committed lesbian couple in their midst, to avoid further tainting of Republicans' chances in 2008.

Maybe Mary should hang out with Paris and Britney after the baby's born since those values seem to be so much less objectionable.

  • I Like The Card Playing Analogy

    "Doubling Down"

Considering what Iraq is costing financially it may have been better, back a few years ago, to send Bush and Cheney out to Nevada with the national treasury instead. To play black jack or Texas Hold 'em. At least we wouldn't have the blood and death.

Can you picture these Neocons at a poker table? They'd be down 3 or 400 billion, then finally take a break to come up with a new strategy. And they just have a few chips left.

  • Battling Paper

Dick Cheney, winner of five draft deferments and all-around master of bureacratic warfare, rides into battle against his own paper trail.

  • Neocon Texas Hold 'Em

Trying to hit the inside straight against the already made flush. Over and over and over. Then a special panel must be formed to recommend new options.

  • RE: -- MAV in Florida

That's a good point though, highlighting the abysmal depths of our lowered expectations of our president. He should be put in a special class for presidents so he can learn at his own pace while the world burns.

  • Exhausting The Options

Hey, the Supreme Court helped Bush and Cheney out in 2,000. Maybe they can do something about Iraq.

  • re: Cheney

as long as Mr. Cheney is the #2 man in power, i'll remain nervous from now until January 2009.

i wish one of the suggestions of the Iraq Study Group was to get replace the VP. there's such strong evidence that he orchestrated much of the intelligence disinformation and analysis. and should President Bush run into any medical problems, Cheney will be the one with his finger on the button...and i'm sorry but i don't believe he has any restrain.

whether he is favored or not at this point, legally he has much too much power

  • We'll Always Have Prague

Don't forget the infamous meeting that was used to falsely connect Saddam to the 9/11 hijackers. "Dick" has long been the only person on the planet still urging that particular falsehood. The best thing that ol' cowpoke can hope for from history, after retiring to the Halliburton boardroom (or some other lucrative undisclosed location), is to be forgotten, as quickly as possible (see: McGeorge Bundy).

  • Why change now?

For the past six years, this whole administration has made denials and changed their story as if the tape recorder or video tape had never been invented. Why change now? After all, if Cheney only watches Fox News, as indicated by his travel protocols, they never call him on his falsehoods anyhow. He can continue to live the rest of his life in his own invented reality.

Too bad about that other reality the rest of us are stuck in.

  • You can run, Dick...

    ... but you can't hide.

The old saw says, "Success has a hundred fathers but failure is an orphan." Dick Cheney's DNA is all over this baby. You wanted the fun of creating the baby, Dick, but now you don't want to take care of it. I say strap Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, et al., to the hoods of Humvees and drive the 7 miles from Baghdad to the airport again and again until they hit an IED.

Bush says he won't be rushed into making a change in strategy. So all you US soldiers and Iraqi civilians who die between now and whenever Bush decides to let us know what he going to do, sorry. You died to buy some time for the Great Decider.

What truly shocks me is that these morons haven't been at least discussing alternatives before now, even at the lower levels of the State and Defense departments. It's as if it just occurred to everyone that what has been going on isn't good. Are these people really this deluded? I thought they knew it was bad, but didn't want to admit the mistake. It seems they really believed everything was or would be OK.

Bush and Co. are fishing for a way to pull victory from the jaws of defeat, to prove Dad and James Baker wrong, but it cannot happen. We no longer control events. Too many mistakes were made from the start: wrong war in the wrong place at the wrong time with the wrong enemy, too few troops, not recognizing the insurgency for what it was and responding to it, etc. Now we add not ramping up the resupply of US forces when their equipment began to wear out. Not bringing your best units home for rest and re-training (82nd AB, 1st Air Cav, 4th Inf Div, etc.). Units are just barely at combat ready status. Units are going back for their third and fourth tours. Early in WW2, bomber crews were expected to fly 25 combat missions before being sent home. It was rare for a crew to fly 20 before being shot down. That did wonders for morale. Getting on that plane to go back to Iraq for the fourth time must make even the toughest Marine weak in the knees. The 82nd AB used to call themselves, "Fugitives from the Law of Averages." They still are.

Other than a complete withdrawal, the only suggestion I have is to create safe zones, neutral corners in the north, west and south for the Kurds, Sunnis and Shiites. Leave the center of the country including Baghdad for the war. Let the insurgents, Al Qaeda and anyone else who's interested blow themselves to bits. When there's just one guy left standing he's declared the winner. We pay billions to rebuild. Bush has to join Jimmy Carter's Habitat for Humanity to swing a hammer.

Oh, and W? As for that worst president ever business? It's all yours, buddy. Compared to you, Warren Harding looks like a fucking genius.
