  • Did you expect anything different?

I never believed any of that claptrap Anne Thompson of NBC was saying 2 months ago about the decline in gas prices -- lessening demand, glut in supply, increasing infrastructure. I couldn't believe she was being trotted out to tell the American consumers that this had nothing to do with politics. I know the public went along with 2 "elections" for George Bush but eventually people stop being that naive. One day soon the media giants are going to figure out the public isn't that stupid.

  • Increasing Gas Prices

Just in time for Thanksgiving travel. How convenient. (I wouldn't be surprised if the election was also tied in to the fall decline in prices.)

  • NO

But its not really evidence of a conspiracy, either. We've had a very mild fall- I just turned on my heat this weekend. It doesn't explain away the decrease over the summer- there may well have been a glut of supply- but it could certainly explain the recent uptick.

  • Absolutely not!

The populace must be punished for voting for the Democratic party! Or is it the counters who must be punished for counting wrong?

  • Paulson's last act at Goldman...

Henry Paulson was the CEO at Gooldman Sachs until Bush appointed him as treasury secretary this fall. Paulson's last act as CEO at Goldman Sachs was to change the oil holdings rules such that, over the past two months, Goldman has sold nearly it's entire oil inventory (billions of dollars worth). This is the "glut" about which they speak, and now that Goldman is sold out, supply to the oil markets drops, and prices rise again.

It's all just a coincidence. Nothing to see here...

  • OVERSIGHT

Weren't there a few hearings this summer about gas prices. Why not again?

  • It's economics, not politics

Gas prices always go up just before the Thanksgiving holiday. This year there also was a bigger supply of gasoline stored up because oil companies had anticipated a horrific hurricane season that never materialized. The demand was the same, but the supply was much greater. Hence, prices went down. OPEC is shady, yes, but five cents isn't that big of a jump.

It wouldn't surprise me if Bush & Cheney attempted to use their oil industry contacts to help them with the midterm elections. But at this point, there's just no convincing evidence that they did.

  • Not a conspiracy -- but still political

When you have so few companies supplying gas, it really doesn't take some kind of centralized, organized effort to shift the prices around like this. All it takes is enough individuals reasonably high up in the management hierarchies to understand how the elections could affect their interests, and to act accordingly. There are probably myriad subtle ways for them to do this -- e.g. shift the maintenance schedules of refineries around a bit.

They don't have to coordinate with each other to accomplish this; but they could assume pretty safely that others with the same interests will be taking similar steps.

  • Coincidence My Arse

As prices slid steeply in August, september, and October, only a republikan couldn't correlate the trend to erection time. Now, the prices magically, and quite steeply, begin to ascend the week after the fascists took a bath. It's DisneyWorld, where everything happens by magic. The oligarchs are yanking our chains, as ususal.

  • More like $.15 per gallon so far -

    In wonderful California -

    $2.23 November 5th

    $2.49 and climbing today.....

    8.6% in two weeks -

    Typical B.S.

  • Whoops - make that $.26

Posting late in the afternoon is ill-advised.

  • Up, but now down

Yes, it did strike me as an odd coincidence that gas prices climbed up a bit immediately after the election, but when I filled up my tank just yesterday, they were back down again here -- I paid $1.99.s/gal, which was about what the prices were here just before the election, if I recall correctly.

In truth, though, gasoline prices have been jumping up and down for months. I've seen them jump up by 5 cents one day, and then drop at the same station by 8 cents a week later. It hasn't been either a steady rise or a steady drop. And as one commenter said, it's an expected thing for prices to go up just before a major holiday anyway.

  • Well

I think the Lundberg survey put the price at 2.23 per gallon. IIRC the price this time last year was 2.24. I heard the figures on the radio this morning so I may not be totally accurate.

    Pax,

    A.

  • you guys have it cheap!

it's $2.45 here in oregon at the arco which is the cheapest gas.

  • A Year-Long Conspiracy

In winter, oil prices go up because of heating oil demand. In springtime oil prices go up because of heating oil demand. In summer oil prices go up because of the summer travel season. In fall and early winter oil prices go up because of the holiday travel season. Give me a week on the calendar, and I can give you a reason oil prices should go up.

The oil companies can tell the public anything they want because there will always be some broad macro-economic reason for oil prices to go up or down, and there is no way for an average citizen to check to see if changes in inventory are because of supply and demand or market manipluation.

If OPEC could severely manipulate oil prices in the 1970s, there is no reason American companies can't do it today, especially when technology makes it even easier to monitor and adjust supply. Alternative energy NOW!!!

  • Coincidence? "I RAN from Saigon, before Sadaam was arrested! and I got to be 'appointed' president" GWB

In 1982 Sadaam and Rummy were Oil Buds!

BARON mind that Vladimir Putin visited Crawford, Texas last year.

Perhaps he traveled through those Soviet Roads lost in Afghanistan to the Mujahadeen.

On Vlads' way from the Caspian Oil Reserves, he may have dropped a few "trickle down dollars", renamed the "EURO", as a member of the "Caolition of the Purchased".

In 1982 Sadaam fit the mold of NEOCONIA as he was the barrier against IRAN conquering the Mid East.

Giving them control of the worlds oil reserves from the borders of Afghanistan along the Tigris and Euphrates to the Gulf and the waters of the Arab peninsula. So dad and Rummy say "Go Sadaam Go" we will back you with our Sattelite Defense and show you how to kill those Iranians, but please stay aasy from those Chemicals we gave you: not the AGENT ORANGE stuff that we use on our own soldiers, but that other stuff.
