The generals and veterans didn't understand?
The ones with battlefield experience didn't understand? Excuse me, Mr. Rumsfeld, they understand far too well you are incompetent. You tried to overrule 2,000 years of military history and lessons from SunTzu, Clausewitz, and Machiavelli with technology and business methods. Downsizing, speed up, and technology are no substitute for boots on the ground, you dumbass. The generals told you to send more troops and use a more Clausewitzian, Powell doctrine strategy. That would have saved lives all around, flattened the insurgency early, and prevented this. NOOOOO, we had to go light and stupid. Remember Vietnam and your mentor Curtis LeMay, Mr. Rumsfeldt? He made the same mistake. Then, instead of outfitting the soldiers as well as possible and setting realistic rules of engagement, NOOOO, we priviledge civilians profiteers, use shoddy equpiment by "friends" bring in Haliburton and Co to cause more hatred, and hamstring our soldiers in myriad petty ways, from refusing legitimate rehab to legitimate body armour, to court martialling people for jerry rigging a "hillbilly" armoured Hummer with abandoned parts.
There will be a special place in hell for you for your wilful incompetence, an incompetence that began with the Millenium Games in 2001 and continued downhill.
Congratulations. You are the first SecDef to disgust and unite every branch in resistance to your stupidity. There have been venal, idiotic, greedily indifferent SecDefs before. You have set a standard for military disdain so low it has never been seen before.
Go to hell and good riddance. I just wish Bush had been smart enough to pick Warner or McCain.

So, what is the next strategy?
Can we withdraw our troops to Afghanistan, and beat back the Taliban, and rebuild the country? Afghanistan has not gone as far down the road as Iraq; it is a smaller country; the Afghans seem better-disposed toward Americans; we had a valid reason for going in there, unlike Iraq.
We have an "ally" Pakistan next to Afghanistan. We still would be positioned next to Iran, to pose a threat or to hold Iran in check.
Maybe Afghanistan could be a real "showcase," as W. Bush and Rummie and Cheney wanted Iraq to be. Or would we just make Afghanistan worse?

As long as people understand that there are things that they dont understand and leave it to people who say they understand the un-understandable, then they will be fine.
Its typical of Rumsfeld to say that the rest of the world is stupid when he is getting fired for not doing his job. What a sore loser!

...he means we do not understand how fucking fabulously wealthy he and his cronies at Carlyle Group are becoming from this illegal massacre
...he means we do not understand that the US needs to plant military bases in other places in the middle east since Saudi basically threw us out
...he means if the US is to police and control the whole planet as a single perfect fascist police state from here to eternity and to have a camera looking up each of our sphincters 24/7/365, (all so the rich, and ONLY the rich, can get mighty richer) the US needs to destroy and re work the middle east to make them behave since they are one of the only remaining places on the planet that refuses to meld with the Borg.
We understand things are not working out according to plan.
The planet is not as stupid as these evil punks such as Rummy and Cheney and Bushie and Blair believe.
