oh....my....god
Thank you Mr. Grieve for so many, many wonderful posts, and this most wonderful one of all. And thanks to Salon for the incredible job tonight - awe-inspiring. It's not over, but...oh...my...

Somehow
I doubt Faux news will claim that Florida was essentially tied in 2000.
-
Not so fast...
Tester is only leading by 3600. His lead has been steadily declining.
-
Huge
The House shift alone would be huge. This is a rebuke to George.

tip of the kevlar helmet...
... to you, Mr. Grieve, and to all your Salon colleagues. Your coverage of election day, and all through the weekend, has been superb. I could get the numbers elsewhere, but I stick around War Room because it's much, much more satisfying than mere links to wire copy and ballot returns; it's a state of mind. And you, of course, set that tone for all the others who helped to keep this blog running overtime for the past 100 hours.
Thanks for that, and to Salon to devoting the resources to keeping the posts coming frequently from writers all over the place.
And yes, it's a night to celebrate and to remember. Now let's all get a little sleep.

Recount Procedures in VA
If anyone is curious, the recount can't begin until the vote is certified on the 27th, at which point the loser (::cough:: Allen) can request a recount between then and December 7th. Then it's up to a panel of judges to decide the logistics of the recount. If, as is currently the case, the loser loses by less than 0.5 percentage points, then the counties are responsible for paying for the recount. If it's between 0.5 and 1 percentage points, then the loser has to pay for it.

A Good Day For America
We needed one.
Congratulations to all the victors.

Thanks all around
No question the optimism you express in this post is this morning widely and deeply felt. It is truly strange the degree to which I was really beginning to wonder if I was the only one anguishing over the recklessness of this administration, if I was the only one losing sleep over things so far outside my sphere of influence, even if I was the only one listening to Springsteen. Turns out I'm not. What a goddamned relief. Thanks for the great work, Mr. Grieve; your writing is pitch-perfect. Mad props. We'll see you all in the morning!

Where's Karl?
I'm jonesing for some gloating. Let's have a perp walk...

Now is the time to get Allen criminally charged with something
Or at least force him to drop out. It is seriously time for persecution of these fuckers.
-
Win, loose, or draw,
the close elections in Montana and Virginia exhibited an exhilarating disatisfaction with Darth the Decider. Burns and Allen (where have I heard that combo before?),even if they ultimately win, have to come to grips with their constituents views on a miryad of issues that even in their conservative-dull witted thinking they can not ignore. My God, these states are soooo conservative. This is so so sweet. People are really pissed-off. Oh, and Diebold, we are watching you guys...

perhaps gw said it best
"I think -- tide turning -- see, as I remember -- I was raised in the desert, but tides kind of -- it's easy to see a tide turn -- did I say those words?"
-- George W. Bush, June 14, 2006

Yes but
2006 was a proxy for Allen' shot at 2008. If he wins this one he'll go on to make a serious run at the Presidency. And let's face reality. Bigoted asshole fuckwits do rather well in the RNC. At this point he could espouse rolling back Amendments 13-15 and his base would cheer. It's important to crush his political future now before it breeds.

Webb needs to win
If Webb loses, can we get upset that the Greens ran a candidate in this pivotal race? It will be very hard to convince me not to.
-
Presidential aspirations
Always a possibility that Allen could still be a serious Presidential candidate contender, but he was supposed to walk with this election, and it'll be a squeak if he does win. As a bonus, he screwed it up mostly by himself. Even if he wins, I think he'll be damaged goods.
-
Yes the damn Greens
I am sick of them. We need to make Machiavellian backroom deals with them to bow out of close races. How many times are we going to let them screw this up?
-
Does anyone know ...
... what happens in a 50-50 Senate with regard to Committee chairships? We all know the VP casts the deciding vote in a tie, but control of the Committees would seem to be a much more crucial issue. And the 50-50 scenario is a real possibility at this point.
Any Poli Sci majors out there??

I dunno Tim..
..if our politicians in Congress were willing, and able, to crush the GOP there the way the GOP has crushed them for the last 12 years, then maybe it would be a new day.
But the right-wing of the GOP is nothing if not relentless. They will be attacking the Dems constantly, and if we don't just crush them, call them on their lies and distortions (CALL them lies)they will win the PR war.
I am very glad the worst excesses of the worst President in our history may be over. Don't get me wrong.
But I am concerned that we will let the GOP snake back in the tent, and that would be wrong. We won. We won more strongly than Bush did in 2000 by far (well, Bush didn't win then, of course..). We should stick it right to them. And stick it HARD.
Starting with a few supoenas. John Conyers, are you there?
We need to put a few people out of business in the next six months, and supoenas would be a great start.

Some guy in a bad movie once said
"I ain't heard no fat lady" and indeed I haven't. I was up until 1:30 AM CST marvelling at the election results and I can taste the blood. Even if the Dems don't take the Senate, I love that George Allen didn't just get to walk out the door with the election. Did you see the look on his wife's face last night a little after 11? She looked like somebody socked her in the gut. He didn't look much better.
I'm proud of our voters across the country and I'm thrilled that this message came home to Bush & Co. as loudly and decisively as it did. I hope we have some Democratic congress people ready to start putting some real hours back into their work weeks. My mission for the next two years is to tirelessly hound my senators and representatives with letters, since I reside in the great state of Texas and the overhwelming moron vote wrecked the show for the rest of us.
