A criminal case? Democrats push for Allen records

The DSCC asks the Virginia Bar to release materials that could explain why George Allen's name appears in a 1974 court file.

Very saintly or very sneaky?

This all makes me a little bit uneasy.

I know this sort of thing is mainly being used in highly contentious races like this one now, but are we going to see more and more future campaigns frantically chasing every past crumb of impropriety that can possibly be unearthed?

There are only two types of candidate who will be able to withstand this kind of examination: those who have never done anything wrong in their lives, and those who have been very, very good at covering up their misdeeds (or who have powerful friends to cover them up). I'm not sure I want either type in power.

perfection

the politics of perfection are troubling. some of the greatest people who ever lived were not saints, and had indiscretions of some kind in their early years, and sometimes later on as well.

if we limit ourselves only to perfect people, we'll be tossing out some of the best and brightest among us, and the most capable.

I'll be glad...

This is not Mah-Jongg

We're not talking about under-age drinking at a frat house or bad taste in prom dates. This is a possible CRIMINAL charge against someone running for the United States Senate, for chrissakes.

Not to mention someone campaigning as a standard-bearer of "moral values." Someone already proven to have lied about past questionable and possibly criminal behavior (the deer's head in the mailbox.) Someone who doesn't have the guts to do his own dirty campaigning, but lets surrogates aim low blows at his opponent.

I say if we don't get the records by Friday, we do 96-hours-non-stop-saturation ads asking "What is George Allen covering up? If it's just traffic tickets, why won't he admit it? Was he arrested for assault? Drug possession? Rape? C'mon, George: Answer the question!"

I agree.

But what that means is that we definitely want to see such "slip-ups" revealed. If voters wish to forgive a given imperfection, then they should have the opportunity to do so. For example, GWB's alcoholism.

That said, it does mean that it would be better for such things to come out well before the final week of the campaign.

"Perfection"

I couldn't care less about a candidate's sex life, library records or several other nit-picky personal bits of information. That kind of information is irrelevant to judging a candidate’s qualifications. But that is not the kind of information that the DSCC seeks. The issue here is possible CRIMINAL misconduct perpetrated by a U.S. Senator. In other words, these could be some very, very bad acts that he committed. Or, they could be trivial: we do not know. But even though the incidents happened some thirty years ago and may or not be relevant to a candidate's character today, voter's should still have information about whether or not a candidate has a serious criminal past and be allowed to weigh such information accordingly.

When you are running for the United States Senator, you should expect people to be curious about warrants.

Allen can't be trusted with anything....

> Not to mention someone campaigning as a standard-bearer of "moral values." Someone already proven to have lied about past questionable and possibly criminal behavior

Also, someone who is willing to send young men and women off to their death even though he was a Chickenhawk who was too cowardly to serve in the armed forces.

And, make no mistake about it, like most bullies, George Felix Allen is a coward.

P.S. He supports marriage, but no one ever asks him about his first wife.....

Smug Thug

George Allen is a racist bully and richly deserves to have his flabby ass handed to him a week from tomorrow. May it be so.

Poll has Webb ahead

The latest poll has Democratic senatorial candidate James Webb up by 5% over Republican incumbent George "Macaca" Allen. Webb has been running 3 to 5 points behind for weeks, and now seems poised to win with just 7 days remaining until Election Day.

allen crimes?

enough's enough. unless someone is an ax murderer or rapist, what someone did 30 yrs ago should be irrelenvant to an election today. that rule should apply to all parties. i mean do the dems want to discuss chappaquiddik yet again?

Door #1 or door #2?

If voters wish to forgive a given imperfection, then they should have the opportunity to do so. For example, GWB's alcoholism.

Or, George's evasion of his "duties" in the National Guard. It think that one falls into the "purge the records" category.

Demand them!

Demand Alle n release his records!

Our soldiers

Thank you for stating the number of our soldiers that have been killed so far in this outrageous war - TWO THOUSAND, EIGHT HUNDRED AND THIRTEEN.

Lately the news has ONLY mentioned those killed in the month of October. Since 100 doesn't feel as bad as TWO THOUSAND, EIGHT HUNDRED AND THIRTEEN.
