  • Good.

We need Mark Warner to hang around and run for John Warner's seat in 2008. I've been miffed at Mark Warner for even thinking about running for president. I wanted him to run against Allen. And with John Warner getting a bit long in the tooth - AND he just got married for (at least) the third time, he's got to be thinking about moving on.

A prediction: Rep. Tom Davis in Northern Virginia will run for John Warner's seat if John steps down in 2008. That's whether or not Davis manages to hang on to his seat next month in the race against Andrew Hurst.

  • But the White House is an easy job.....

look at all the vacation time bush gets, and look at all the nap time Reagan got. Four hour work day, 2-3 months of vacation, long weekends - but, hey, it's a stressful job.

  • Too High A Hillary To Climb

C'mon, Warner can invoke "family" all he wants, but we all know the truth: he figures he can't beat Hillary. This way, he can set himself up for a VP nomination when Hillary triumphs over the rest of the field.

I mean, who's left? Little Johnny Edwards, fer cry-eye?

Unless Gore loses some weight and starts running (soon, Al, soon!), Hillary's now got the nomination in the bag. Of course, she's unelectable, but that seems, at this point, to be a condition for winning the Democratic nomination, not a disqualifier.

  • Gee...

a dem who is qualified, respected in the party and has clear opinions on what's wrong with the current admin but, just can't be bothered to take on the hard work.

I gues he'lll just sit on the sidelines with the rest of the party and complain.

    No surprise there.

  • Being a family

man, I agree with Warner's decision. Hug your dad and give copious amounts of time to your kids. Time moves very quickly when loved ones are involved. We'll miss what he would have added to the debate.

  • Ironic

The irony is that people like him, of character and integrity who understand what truly matters in this world, are exactly the kind who SHOULD be running for office. And they're the ones we repel with our meat-grinder, gotcha, scandal politics.

  • It's not like Warner is retiring from politics

Someone else posted that he'll likely run for the senate when Warner retires. And he's still governor. To suggest he's "giving up" is ridiculous. He's just postponing a possible run for the White House.

  • Spending More Time with the Family

You know, I'm always a little suspicious of the "Spend more time with the family" reason, but in this case think that it has the ring of truth. Warner had as good a shot as anyone this far out and didn't seem to need to worry about skeletons in the closet, so I'll buy it. I can also understand it.

    BTW Joe regarding:

... qualified, respected in the party and has clear opinions on what's wrong with the current admin but, just can't be bothered to take on the hard work.

Kinda sounds like the present occupant of the Oval Office except for the parts about qualified, respect, and having a clue about what's wrong with the current administration. I suppose it's just as well that W.can't be bothered to take on the hard work, or things would be even more SNAFU'd than they are.

There are plenty of Dems who can do the job, they don't all need to run at once.

  • My mistake

Tim Kaine is governor of Virginia now. Sorry.

  • Less competition for Russ Feingold

Good. Send checks to Russ instead.

  • Gender Issues

If he were a woman, we would probably be hearing about how he is "opting out."

  • Believe him

I just ate dinner ten feet from Mark Warner, and he looked as happy as a guy who just got out of jail. And, in a way, he probably should.

Of course, he is a politician, and who knows why he chose not to run. Perhaps he wanted to spend more time with his family, perhaps it was something else. I'll go ahead and believe him.

  • So which is it?

    Pregnant babysitter?

    Gay?

    Shady real estate deal?

Connections to an NGO run by an arms dealer?

    Pot bust in 1974?

    Wife is a drunk?

    Wife is a lesbian?

Pictures of him in Klan costume?
