Woodward: Rice didn't get al-Qaida threat, ignored troop crisis in Iraq

But at least Dick Cheney was fixated on finding those WMD.

The letters thread is now closed.

Why am I not surprised?

The story of how these clowns botched everything they touched would be funny if thousands of people hadn't died because of their incompetance.

wrong word

"CIA was collecting about an impeding attack"

impeding is impending in this sentence.

Less sycophantic

Obviously, like almost everyone else, I've not yet read Woodward's new book, but it looks more promising and considerably more critical than his last one. Perhaps the lashing he received in the wake of his last book pricked his conscience--or at least his pride--sufficiently that we will get a much more honest and full picture of the Bush administration this time around. I just hope the media gives the book wall-to-wall coverage and that swing voters are listening.

Most misleading headline.... evuh!

Ok, perhaps not ever, but "Rice didn't get al Qaeda threat" sure can be confusing. The article's meaning would better be expressed by "Rice didn't *understand* al Qaeda threat"

The current headline can easily be misunderstood to mean that the stories of Sandy Berger, Richard Clarke, etc warning Rice, Hadley, et al were not true. Although, such a misinterpretation might sucker some of the delusional millions into reading your snippet, another story of how the Bush Administration failed not only to take the ball and run, but failed to recognize the existence of the ball, in their first 8 months in office.

why does this matter?

So we're getting some more particulars and details of things we've known for a long time. The real story is that it STILL doesn't register with the American public at large. Now, Bush screeching one lie and distortion after another...that registers. That's our real problem, the willfull acceptance of lies by the American people.

It WILL Register with the American People...IF WE TELL THEM

The reason the American people have failed to recognize that Bush failed to prevent the attacks- to the degree that it appears he actually wanted them to happen- is because nobody has been courageous enough to say it let alone report it. That is until Clinton has come along to bail out all the idiots once again.

The 9/11 terrorists attacks provided Bush and Co. everything they ever wanted: absolute power and an endless stream of wealth for them and those who get them elected via an endless war.

I'm not only saying that Bush "failed" to prevent the attacks. I think it is beyond obvious that they went well out of their way to prevent people who recognized and reported the warningsfrom stopping the attacks.

American people will catch on if people start to tell the honest story in a coherent message. This is a trickle that needs to turn into a tidal wave.

I'm quite torn...

Woodward has previously shown that he has forfeited any claim to his journalistic "cred" to gain White House access. He, in fact, became a spokesman for the White House talking points as well as hiding his role while actively providing disinformation cover during the Plame incident.

Wouldn't it be wonderful to find that he's actually been running a 5 year undercover infiltration. Unfortunately, the likelihood is that he's trying to use this "critical" book to salvage his reputation. The only thing I've heard "new" reported is that Kissinger is an active advisor on Iraq...other than that this is all stuff we've known for quite some time.

So, the cynic in me, fueled by his past transgressions, says that I hope his book tanks and is quickly available as a remainder at Border's for $5.99.

On the other hand, if his having been such a sychophant would get another Bush "believer" to see more of the truth maybe some good would come.

Alas, the "believers" won't be reading this book, so I guess my cynical, vindictive side wins this round. I hate when that happens, but I'm getting used to it with this regime...

Just Asking

I'm surprised that Chris Wallace wasn't able to uncover all this information. Wasn't he asking the Bush administration those questions? Gosh, you don't think Clinton might have been right, do you? That Chris really WAS just pulling a right-wing hatchet job?

I suppose if Wallace fils hadn't already announced that he thought the old man was senile, Mike would be embarrassed to have sired such a boob.

Feeling Guilty About Something Mr. Woodward?

This is a reporter who has had unfettered access to the White House. He held on to a story about the Plame outing as well as many of the beans he's now spilling in this book until well after the 2004 elections. Rather than print these revelations then, he chose to cozy up with Karl Rove and the gang. He was complicit in allowing this administration to run amuk. Now he's trying to show the world that they really Neocons gone wild. Why didn't you do this earlier Mr. Woodward? Self serving SOB.

Is he trying to make amends for his past sins, or is he trying to make some cash and clear his reputation? He is guilty of aiding and abeiting this administration and his hands are covered in the blood of our soldiers as well as any innocent civilians who have been killed in this war. He is a perfect example of what is wrong with the mainstream press who hide information and lie to the public. You sir are no Helen Thomas!

Woodward: Bah! Humbug!

First the completely toady book about King George, then the Plame b/s, and now this amazing insight into the inner workings of the Al-Queda threat...WOW bob WOW. I have to agree with the cynics this time, he is woking overtime to pump up what is left of his reputation. Street cred? What street...Primrose Lane? This seems like a guy that time forgot after the Nixon era who became more interested in the trappings of power and access than in doing the job of the 4th estate. Shame on him and those who parse Bush's talking points. The temporary trappings gleaned will, I hope, ultimately be their undoing.

Don't forget to vote in November, it may just save our democracy.

Foley blackmailed by RNC

Right at the time that Congressman Tom Reynolds was concluding that there was nothing inappropriate about Fole'y emails and instant messages to pages, Foley was donating $100,000 to his campain committee (http://www.rawstory.com/news/2006/Dem_Senate_Leader_Reid_demands_Attorney_1001.html). In all, Foley was one of the largest single contributors to the National Republican Congressional Committee, $330,000. Why does he donate so much money in the middle of his own reelction campaign?
