LeftWright, I'm ordinarily not receptive to extremist analyses
and promptings to revolution, but you could be on to something. Increasingly, I fear Dystopia is our future. Globalization has enabled a world-spanning and consolidated class of plutocrats who have allegiance to neither country nor folk, only to unbridled economic and political power. They already control much of the media and all of the corporations and conglomerates. It's possible that their power and influence has become too extreme to be checked by the political process because they have already subverted the political establishment. It's no wonder that informed people are uneasy and anxious.

More reasons to fear
Glenn:
I'm afraid your analysis is spot-on, and that, as a result of (i) the intriguingly-timed drop in fuel prices, (ii) the new Republican "torture compromise" (which makes a mockery of bedrock human rights principles and the Geneva Conventions, due process and the rule of law (by, e.g., denying habeas corpus relief and thus court access to over 400 Guantanamo detainees whose lives our country has destroyed), the idea of open government, and the separation of powers), (iii) the despicable Republican vote suppression machine, (iv) the possible death of Osama (now being reported, but not yet confirmed) and (v) the shocking quietude of Democratic Party leadership in the wake of all this (except for its lame attack this week on the buffoon Hugo Chavez), we will all be facing two more years of Republican legislative, executive, and (if Stevens can't hold out for 2 more years) judicial hegemony. It is hard to imagine a more devastating scenario for our country and the world. My heart breaks at the thought.
I greatly appreciate your consistently thoughtful, sober analysis, and wish you could be more than a pinch-hitter on Salon. We all need to hear more from you! Like others who have posted on this article, I intend to forward your piece to my senators (Schumer and Clinton), Reid, Obama (our best long-term hope), Feingold, and Durbin, as well as Pelosi.
Keep up your great work, and please let us know what you think we should all be doing to help stave off electoral disaster in November.

The Issue of Democratic Malaise
I used to think like Mr. Greenwald...that Democrats felt intimated by the neo-con machine and feared being called "supporters of terrorists." But then a dissfernet song began to play in the fabric of my background...Just how much malfeasance has occurred in the life of every politician? What types of unusual sexual peccadillos might be trotted across the pages of the so-called liberal press, all under the guise of information that should be disseminated for the public good? The fact is, each and every person over the age of twenty-one has something in our lives that we are ashamed of, some foible or family member that leads a questionable lifestyle. And my God, can anyone deny that such revelations surely end careers?
The well oiled Republican machine is very aware of the damage that scandal can do to a political career. Look at what they did to Bill Clinton. Yet, the Democrats have individually and severally committed the same crime - none of them, male of female, have the balls to stand up anf flings the Republican lies back in their face. It has something to do with being too well educated not to engage in a street fight. And with such sensibilities, the democrats are losing their very souls.
I tried during the Kerry campaign to reach key democrats, to tell them to simply speak to the plain people, people just like me, speak the truth and not to shrink from the unfounded lies that flow like water from the Republican camp. My letters, to my knowledge went unread and yet I was expressing exactly "how" the democrats needed to proceed to try and gain back voters and dignity.
The democrats in office, each and everyone live at the top of American economic society. To be sure, each and every democrat, just like each and every Republican, will not do anything to jeopardize that lifestyle. We have all become slaves to what we consider the "good life" and yet what we are sacrificing everyday by embracing the lies and the subterfuge from the powers that be is just that...we are each living the life of an indentured servant, slaves to an ideology that worships power and covets greed.
To loosely quote from Farenheit 451 "keep them entertained, keep them so busy that they don't have time to think and no time to question..." And that my friends, is exactly where we find ourselves today.

Look behind the curtain
Unless and until you willing to look past the distractions played out on the public stage you will never fully understand or be able to properly analyze what you think you see.
Do the research.
Study the facts.
Make the connections.
Give yourself permission to see what's really there.
There is a flaming elephant in the room.
A flaming elephant made of molten steel, still glowing bright red/orange, even after weeks of being buried under the ruins.
The flaming elephant in the room is the truth of 9/11.
The "Democrats" are not indifferent, they have been made irrelevant.
The truth shall set you free. Love is the only way forward.

Spies
Ken Mehlman the other day proclaimed that the RNC had invested heavily in investigating the personal and professional lives of all the Democratic candidates running for office in '06. It's a safe bet that they have not stopped there but have investigated every Democrat in the House and Senate as well. The beauty of all this is that they haven't done any of this behind closed doors. No, they've been "debating" it openly in the U.S. Congress! The use of spying and snooping on political opponents by the RNC is not something that may happen or is about to happen...it's already happening. Mehlman said so himself. The DNC's response to this announcement? Well, you might have thought that it would have been..."Well bring it on Ken, we'll have a good old fashion mud fight 'cause we got the goods on you too." But no, that wasn't their response. The DNC announced that they too had investigated THEIR OWN CANDIDATES to be better able to respond to the attacks that are sure to come against the person and the careers of the Democratic candidates from the RNC. Jeeessshhh! That's why the Dems are cowered. Rove (J. Edgar Hoover's twin) has effectively neutered them, again.
