Questions
Do the majority of Americans watch these shows as their primary news source? Are the networks merely going for entertainment value?
-
So...
how does this make Couric's interview any different than most of the shallow interviews with the President and other politicians that we've been subjected to in the mainstream media?
Given Ms. Couric's "news" pedigree I had no expectations that she would change the news on television for the better. She's just confirming that she's another telegenic face, albeit female, who is not going to do the hard work to truly inform us. Let's face it, with or without Ms. Couric, television is a terrible way to stay informed and has been for at least a couple of decades.

Eeeeeewwwww!!!!!
Oh, gross!!!
I am so glad I missed that "interview." I'da had to triple my lisinopril dose.
-
trained monkey
She was brought in as a lightweight, nothing more. Dan Rather wasn't just another shill for the Republican Party.
And yes, most people do get their "news" from sources like that...and that is why the Republicans will keep their majority in both the House and Senate come November and everyone will wonder "why, oh why, is the country falling apart?" The majority of stupid, ill-informed, gullible Americans should look in the mirror when they answer that question.
-
news you can lose
This is why I get my TV news from the Daily Show. She could have at least asked him what he believed Camus was trying to say when his character killed the Arab, or what "three Shakespeares" he read. MacBeth? Richard III? A Comedy of Errors?

RIP, Jennings, and don't look down
The only anchor I ever trusted (since Cronkite) was the late lamented Peter Jennings. I hope heaven is sufficiently interesting that he's stopped paying attention to what is left of network news, or he'd weep.

Another King George Harlot
Isn't it wonderful to see King George and his newest harlot concubine together?
-
Soldiers...
Realistically, what does he expect the soldiers to say when they meet him? "Can I go home now? Please?!" That's just not going to happen. These are trained professionals, and he's the President. Even if I met Bush, despite my almost unexpressably low opinion of him, I'd be cordial, say "thank you, Mr. President", and probably keep my mouth shut. That's also exactly why he remains in a bubble.

Just What I Like ...
Hard-hitting, no-nonsense interviews.
God, from Ed Murrow to Little Katie Brown-nose in one lifetime. How pathetic.
-
Best quote from the interview
My jaw hit the floor when Bush said "You know, one of the hardest parts of my job is to connect Iraq to the War on Terror."
I find that to be a very significant and revealing statement. Not only does he acknowledge implicitly that most American's don't buy it but it's also his perspective - one that has to be sold. It doesn't really reflect the facts on the ground.
-
What did you expect?
Katie Couric could have asked the hardest-hitting questions imaginable, and she would have gotten the same canned ramblings. Or perhaps the famous petulance, which would have been entertaining to a lot of us, I suppose, but not all that enlightening. One thing is for sure: Bush doesn't help himself by giving interviews. He has lost the confidence of a majority of people in this country, and I'm guessing his slide will continue.

Hooray for Couric! Great Interview, great journalist.
Now there is no doubt that Katie Couric has "the right stuff" to anchor a national evening news slot. I have a feeling that her critics here in lefty-land are just seething with contempt because Couric scored the big "get" by having President Bush on her news program.
I don't know what the problem is with liberals. Couric asked the questions liberals would have asked, point blank. And our President responded candidly, warmly and with great respect. President Bush should come back often and talk with Couric on a regular basis. This way, the American people can see what a wonderful, sincere and caring man is George W. Bush, not the simple fool that liberals portray him as.
You have to give credit also for Couric's new and fresh format for delivering news to mainstream America, mixing a little fun stuff, like Suri Cruise, along with the harder news like our most recent triumph in Iraq -- the turning over of the new Iraqi Army to the coalition government. You don't see much about that on the other networks. All the good news about our War on Terror can't get through the liberal filter. But Couric is well on her way to changing that.

Katie and "Joe" sitting in a tree..
Hooray for Couric! Great Interview, great journalist.
And I bet you wrote that with a straight face.
-
Take Courage
Contrast Ms. Kouric's celeb-style interview with the one NBC's Brian Williams gave the president last week while walking around a dismal-looking New Orleans "set" and there's reason to hope. He didn't exactly grill the president, but he didn't kiss his ass. Bush came off as a kid in class bullshitting his way through a book report.
Meanwhile, I've set my Tivo to MSNBC's Countdown with Keith Olbermann.

Please.........
........someone bring back mediawhoresonline.com and keep it running at least through the end of this administration.

Gravitas (not)
The much-over-used (going back to 2000 and why Cheney was chosen as the GOP veep candidate) term "gravitas" has been used lately as a yardstick by which to measure Ms. Couric and other TV news types (Anderson Cooper and Elizabeth Vargas also come to mind).
Well, Katie put an end to those questions with that one pitiful interview (or softball session)on her first day in the mightly-news anchor chair: no, she doesn't have it.
Can you imagine Daniel Schoor, Helen Thomas, Ted Koppel or even Dan Rather letting W. get away with those idiotic [non]responses? No, me neither. Which is, in part, why Katie got the W. interview and those real journalists won't.
I can't wait til she lands the Darth Cheney interview and asks about Lynne's cheerleader prowess...

CBS
Straight downhill from Dan Rather via Bob Schieffer to a butt kissing Kate Couric. Count me out from that networks evening news. Had a good laugh though reading Joes insane comments. Another asskisser. Keep up the good work Joe, we all need a laugh once in a while, stupidity is really great as expressed by you.
