Bye, Joe. have a nice retirement, you slimy sellout. It's not just that he voted for the war resolution that freed Queen Georgie. He's been spouting RNC talking points on every Sunday show for three years. He's all but fellated Cheney and Rumsfailed. He needs to go away. tonight would be a good time,
I haven't been able to stomach Lieberman ever since he was a vice presidential candidate, and based his campaign on his foolish moralistic condemnation of Hollywood and the entertainment industry. That was a tired and ridiculous target, especially for a Democrat. I've gotten used to the fact that he parrots neoconservative policy on almost every issue, and thus has betrayed the party to which he nominally belongs. But why in the world has he been so forcefully and vehemently been criticizing democrats and citizens who oppose the war in Iraq? He may actually think that the war in Iraq was justified because Saddam Hussein had ties to terrorism and planned to unleash destruction on the United States' home soil (although I profoundly doubt that), but what could he possibly have to gain by accusing other Democrats and anti-war Americans of putting our country's security at risk? He surely can't believe that -- not even Karl Rove or Dick Cheney believe it, but rather cynically exploit that rhetoric for political purposes. How could anyone who calls himself a Democratic think that debating or criticizing government actions and policies -- one of the most treasured rights of the citizens of a democracy -- should be suppressed in the name of domestic security? What political gain could he obtain by going after prominent members of his party? I despise Lieberman for being a neoconservative Republican in a Democrat's clothing, but I have to say, the thoughts are motives of this man are a complete mystery.
If every Dem who voted for the war should be shot in the face...Then there won't be enough Dem Senators to do much of anything.
It's about knowing everything we now know about what a disaster this war has been and still thinking it was a swell idea, despite all evidence to the contrary.
20 stories tall and made of radiation.
Lieberman places great emphasis on reasoned discussion, but his position on the war rules out serious discussion of the issues. We are not to question the war because it weakens national security, never mind that the war itself has and continues to weaken national security. Reasoned discussion would have gone a long way toward improving our national security. The lack of discussion and debate on the war in the congress has lead us to the disasterous situation we are now facing in Iraq and in the Middle East. If Lieberman really believed in reasoned discussion and debate, he should have championed investigations into the comeptency of the Bush administration in its conduct of the war, not rubber stamped Bush's profoundly misguided policies. This is why Liberman should not be reelected.
Kudo's to Glenn Greenwald for doing a great job filling in for Tim this week. These are concise, well thought through posts and they reinforce my enjoyment of the Salon Forum.
Now to Joe Lieberman: Sorry Joe, but you've been playing both sides for too long. You've been caught, and you're being called out by your constituents. From the time you covered your own ass by standing for senator and VP at the same time (in 2000) to the multiple times you have triangulated over issues you needed to take a real stand about, you've been concerned about Joe, Joe, and Joe. When the country desperately needed someone (besides Russ Feingold and Robert Byrd) to stand up to the Neocon Nutjobs, Lieberman wasn't just silent, he was complicit to the Neocon crimes. There are very few members of the opposition party who were as well placed to stand up and say WTF when George and the boys were leading us into the current disaster in the Middle East. Joe distinguished himself as a cheerleader for the tragedy. From Budgets to Supremes to Medicare to Katrina to National Defense Joe has been a DINO (Democrat in Name Only). I'm sure Lieberman will make millions as a lobbyist for the special interests he has been sucking up to for the past 18 years, but as Clinton/Gore said of the Bushies in 1992... It's time for him to go.
...is to demonize them for their demonizing ways.
Off with their heads.
Seriously, I never thought Joe Lieberman offered much more than "I'm Joe Lieberman." Then he went all Bush-wacky. Good riddance with fingers and toes crossed.
I'll echo the comments that this was a very well done article. The Washington Post article does a very good job of analyzing how Lieberman was a shaky politician even before his support for the Iraq war anyway. Lieberman has proven he's selfish and concerned a lot more about his lobbyists interests (Israel, the moral crusade, etc.) than his constituency. Even if Joe manages to win the primary, his role in the party is completely undermined, which is a nice fresh breath of air from a party that seems so eager to capitulate to the other side.
We should all be thankful that Lieberman's reign is about to end in one form or the other.
Then there won't be enough Dem Senators to do much of anything. Of course while you're purging the ranks of those who's lack of faith you find disturbing, the Republicans will be rolling you up one district at a time. And then it will be another decade of Dem impotence and whining.
It is kind of pathetic, however, that it has become so difficult to fight corporate power in America that We the People are giddy over the possibility that our views concerning the most important issue of our time might actually prevail -- that a Democrat might actually win a Democratic primary (in a blue state). And yes, the mainstream media's shock and horror at the prospect of real democracy taking place in America is totally disgusting. On the other hand, I've become so accustomed to election day "surprises" in recent years, that I can practically already hear smarmy pontificators like CNN's Bill Schneider gleefully asserting that Lieberman won after all because by golly even some Democrats agree that America shouldn't just surrender to the terrorists who attacked us on 9/11.
Katherine Harris hasn't been spotted in Connecticut recently, has she?
