Frist, in a switch, moves Voting Right Act just in time for Bush

Friday, he wasn't in any hurry. But with the president speaking before the NAACP today, the Senate majority leader is on the case now.

The letters thread is now closed.

Well, we always SAY we want more transparency in government...

Does it get any more transparent than THIS?

The level of political calculation and pandering by the Bush White House and their colleagues in Congress is absolutely breathtaking! Do you think anyone will notice?

When the right thing is done for the wrong reasons

This is politics, okay? Let's be thankful that the VRA is on the Senate floor and going to get a vote. Critiquing politicians for doing the right thing for the wrong reasons doesn't really get us anywhere. Why not praise Frist? Then he might do something like this again. Politicians, admittedly, aren't as easily trained as dogs, seals, or children, but rewarding them when they do the right thing is a start.

More supervision is needed, not less.

For an example of how things work without the voting rights act when Republicans are in charge refer to Florida which, unfortunately, isn't covered by the Voting Rights Act. How many more grossly inaccurate "felon purges" in black majority districts would take place if the Act was allowed to lapse? How many shortages of voting machines would occur in these districts, like what happened in Ohio, would there be if the act lapsed?

Hell, the whole country seems to need some oversight for elections. The existing procedures are lacking where oversight is not explicitly required by law.

It should be clear...

...to any self-respecting member of the NAACP that this is just pure political hocum. And what about all those poor southern states that were being so unfairly targeted when so much "progress" has been made in the last thirty years?Well, they're just going to have to learn some spanish. This is just another example of how weak the Republicans feel just about now.Sidenote:Isn't this the first time Bush has spoken in front of the NAACP?I could be wrong...

NAACP

Just lost my respect, by even allowing bush to speak.

VRA, NAACP, and Bush

The people who will vote because the VRA was cast do not care why it was passsed. Most laws exist for the same two reasons, it is the morally correct thing (for some) and it is the politically correct thing (for the rest).

The more progressives vote their best interest the more often the moral and the political will be in synch.
