    don't misunderestimate

Ignoring Coulter with the thought that she'll "go away" or encouraging her with the thought that she'll eventually alienate Republicans with her stupidity and viciousness are two approaches that don't appreciate what she is tapping into. A lot of Americans are bored, uneducated, overstressed, filled with vague feelings of hatred, inferiority and frustration, and conditioned to appreciate bullying and sadism. They sense that something has gone wrong with their country but don't grasp what it is. People like Coulter trot out a lot of hackneyed cliches: "it's the effeminate liberals, the gays, coloreds, atheists etc." and immediately people can channel their rage and contempt. If Adolf Hitler were alive today he would be on the bestseller list right next to Coulter.
