Yelladog,
Why would any of them sign up? Most of the current administration and Right Wing media is amde up of cowards who made excuses or used connections to get out of vietnam. One famously said "I had other priorities". Fools follow where fools lead.
trying to get rich,
I support the troops, I want to bring them home. I want them to be given proper body armor and vehicle armor in the meantime. I want them to have medical benefits when they get back. I want them not to be treated like expendable pieces in an attempt to save face for Bush. I'm willing to pay higher taxes to do so, are you?
"why are you not out there helping them"? You mean by voluntering for the military? Because I never thought this war should have been fought. I said at the time that this was a mistake and that Bush was wrong for starting it. I'm not, nor have ever been "Pro-War" in Iraq. Lets see those who are volunteer and then I'll still be agitating for them to be supplied properly and brought home. It isn't the troops fault the man they're doing their jobs for is a criminal.
Nicely put. I tried, in another thread here on Salon a while back, to pose the same challenge. Trolls had invaded that thread, too, and I wrote the same thing: if you're between 18 and 39, and you *claim* to supposedly support this war, then by all means, GO FIGHT IN IT!!!!!!!
You wouldn't have believed the responses I got. Slimy neocon chickenhawks fired back and had all sorts of excuses as to why they haven't enlisted to fight. It was pathetic. Cowards and hypocrites. That's all the republicans really have left anymore.
What is even more sickening is that after EVERYTHING that has happened, all the lies, all the scandals, all the shitting on the constitution, there are still apparently some 30% of people out there who support this lunatic in office. That is a terrifying thought, my friend. Every time I read that number, I *swear* there is a decimal point missing. Should be more like 3.0%, if you ask me...now that would make sense.
JD (as he was known in the day) was a DJ (funny how that works out) at 1050 CHUM in Toronto, then moved on to TV as a pretty face on Much Music (Canada's MTV). From there he moved on to CBS as a news-reader - American networks like us because we have 'neutral' accents, not for our journalistic abilities. He has no credentials to be a 'senior correspondent' on anything. Somewhere there is a good video clip of him with a mullet, stoned and making jokes about the copious amounts of weed at the music festival north of Toronto he was covering in the early '80s. Somebody, please dig this up!
Fair enough, Roberts totally messed up that segue. And fair enough, the Situation Room is a bit overdone...however, not everything is lost, and not every comment is as fruitless or off base as that one.
For example, possibly on the same show, speaking with the aforementioned Cafferty, Cafferty (the opinionated one) asks Wolf (the measured paced anchor) what ever happened to the "Powell Doctrine" of the use of force (you know, the one about if you break it you fix it and use enough troops to win the war and the aftermath). Wolf Blitzer did not flinch, he said Sec of Defense Rumsfield vetoed that argument, and then went on to continue his broadcast
I know it's not news to WarRoom readers, but to hear an anchor criticize the Sec Def as ignorant or even WRONG is news in the MSM...or at least it had been for 5 plus years.
Arab/Farsi countries have a long and documented history of using chemical weapons going back to Egypt using them against Yemen in 1963. Libya, Syria, Iraq, Iran and Saudi Arabia have all dabbled in the poor man's atomic bomb. Big Freakin Deal. It's part of the scenery, like sand. Worrying about middle eastern Arab/Farsi atrocities is like worrying about potholes. That's what's so unfathomable about the Iraq war. Why pick on them on such a target-rich environment? Not that it matters really - if we take away their WMD they'll use guns, if we take away their guns they'll use rocks. And rocks they have lots of.
that's thje only thing that explains it, crack cocaine is a epidemic at CNN
Already did my service more than 30 years ago. But for all you hypocritical libs who mouth the empty words "I support the troops but ..." why aren't you out there helping them? C'mon, merely mouthing words is not support. Fighting alongside them is. Uncle Sam is waiting!
To those who still defend this war, I say only this:
If you are current or former military, thank you for your service.
If you are NOT current or former military and are under the age of 39, why are you not volunteering to fight the good fight? Don't tell me you have kids or a wife or a swell job-plenty of Guardsmen and Reservists can say the same thing. Get out there and put it on the line for the Iraqi people! Put your beliefs into practice! Quit typing nasty letters and DO something! Your Uncle is calling-pick up the phone!
Otherwise, just go away.
If you'd like to make a point, make it. But there is a special species of brainwashed troll who loves to come on to a liberal website and try to make himself and his stupid arguments the center of attention.
We never were sure of whether Saddam had WMD at all. What wasn't doctored evidence for the rubes, like the stuff in the State of the Union, or the numerous leaks by Curveball and other liars to Judith Miller, was extremely doubtful. Saddam, being a smart politician at least, had decided to come clean, seeing that as the only hope to avoid the invasion. In fact, it's been established that his regime was desperately trying to give us whatever we needed, but we weren't interested in that evidence at all, in fact. The WMD crap was just for the rubes, those morons who believe that America should only fight just wars, that is, wars where our security is an issue. Where we have been attacked.
You can tell how much a lie it was by the fact that the pres himself had to say, "But Saddam kicked out the inspectors." In 1998. But he had let them back in in 2003, big time. A couple of months more with the UN inspectors, and it would have been completely certain that no WMDs existed. THAT's why WE ended the inspections by telling the UN to get out of the country; leave them there another two months, and our phony pretext would have been removed.
There's a word for a regime that trumps up bogus facts so that they can make war, but it's not a nice one, and no, I'm not an America hater, you are, and Bush is. We've arguably lied our way into war twice before: the Mexican War, in order to grab the Southwest for the U.S., and the Spanish-American War, which didn't have much to do with Cuban freedom, but did have a lot to do with seizing Spanish colonies throughout the world. But most American wars have been forced upon us. That's the way the Democratic Republic likes it.
