Parody? The Colbert Report is exactly how they feel the media is supposed to work; "Who hates America more, you or Michael Moore" seems to them to be a perfectly valid question.

Yeah, I love the way Colbert stuck it to liberal freak Greenwald. I loved it so much, I didn't notice the laugh track, or the "Comedy Central" logo. And I swear I couldn't find anything about Colbert being a satirist out of the paltry 6,000,000 Google hits on the man.

OK everybody...shhhhhh. Colbert is not a satirist, he is a right-wing wingnut, k? Just because the new-cons don't get it now, doesn't mean they might not catch on in a year or two. Which would give them plenty of time to figure it out before he runs for president, and wins 100% of the vote. Can you imagine the elecion night party? 29% chanting "USA!" "USA!" and the other 71% happily chuckling quietly to themselves. The dawn of a new age!

Ya know, I just love Stephen Colbert. He's just about the funniest guy around; most of you have probably seen him on The Daily Show and, of course, on his new gig The Colbert Report. You might also want to check him out in an offbeat sitcom he performed in a few years ago, Strangers with Candy.

But as funny as Colbert is, this is even funnier. Using Stephen Colbert to support Tom Delay's fundraising efforts? Now THAT'S a howler.

In all seriousness, though, I don't think even Tom Delay is stupid enough to take Colbert at face value. He knows damn well that The Colbert Report is a spoof (it's on Comedy Central, for Chrissakes). But he's a Republican, and no one's better than they are at spin. And that's what Delay is doing here; spinning. He knows that few of his supporters are Colbert watchers, and he's counting on their ignorance of popular culture (we're talking about the Christian right here, after all) to allow him to use Colbert's interview with Greenwald as if it's serious. What does he care that he's misusing the clip if it is successful in garnering contributions to his legal defense fund?

Let's face it: the Republicans in power are dishonest, corrupt and arrogant but they're not stupid. They're happy to pick up any tool that's handy to get the work done, and if that tool belongs to their bitterest opponents so much the better. We might be laughing at them now, but it's Delay that will be laughing all the way to the bank with the money the Colbert clip teases out of his silly supporters.

Concrete thinking, and I think this is a perfect example. Concrete thinking is when you ask someone what is meant by a rolling stone gathers no moss, and they reply that a stone that is rolling is going too fast to let moss grow on it. I think this is what has happened here. Colbert is absolutely wonderful at being oblivious to rational discussion in his interviews. (My favorite is the one with Earl Blumenauer in Better Know a District.) But honestly, this is not that funny. Mostly you can tell SC is kidding around, but this almost looks like an interview you would actually see on Fox. "They won, they should be able to do whatever they want, right?" I heard Tucker Carlson ask Bill Maher (Bill Maher?) if he thought the government should help Katrina victims rebuild their homes as if it was an outrageous idea. Krazee.

...it seems to me that the fundraising letter is not crowing about anything Colbert said. It just focuses on how Greenwald presented his own work. I agree that it seems funny for the right wing to chortle over the Repor', but unfortunately I don't see them buying into Stephen's schtick. The venue isn't the issue here--the guest is. Or have I missed something really obvious?

But scary too - looks like they *really* believe that democrats hate america.

This tells me the DeLay team is desperate for any positive support.. even faux positive support. What is sad is that there are a number of people in this country who just don't understand Colbert's humor or message. And we're not talking hillbillies.. this is same guy invited to roast Bush WHAT WERE THEY THINKING at the press corps dinner and introduced as Stephen ColBERT.

That's the problem with those neofundamentalists who inhabit the parallel universe of the Foxist Reptilian Right. The guys just have no sense of irony. For them, satire is forever a foreign language.
