Well, he's still got Nixon to kick around

As "angry conservatives" turn on Bush, his approval ratings approach Watergate-era levels.

33 %

My heart bleeds for those neocons. As Colbert said 67 % agree with what they are not doing. Good for them.

USA Today founder Al Neuharth has also jumped ship

Al Neuharth, who's generally supportive of conservatives, has officially jumped ship too -- his latest column in today's USA Today contains these paragraphs near its end:

"How low can Bush's approval rating go? My hunch is it's at or near the bottom. That 34% represents mostly unshakeable far-right wingers. Like Bush, Vice President Cheney and company, they are in denial. As were the 24% in the polls who still approved of President Richard Nixon before he resigned in disgrace.

What happened to the 37% who have switched from pro-Bush to anti-Bush? They finally realized they were suckered by Bush and his buddies back then about Saddam Hussein's alleged weapons of mass destruction, his tie to terrorists and his threat to the USA."

Very plain-spoken, and no doubt very true. I always return to this thought -- can you imagine how few of Dubya's remaining supporters would have stood for even ONE TENTH of the mistakes, foul-ups and disasters made during the Bush presidency from any Democrat? Our heads would spin to see how quickly impeachment proceedings would begin, after beginning a pre-emptive war of choice that turned out to be totally unsupported by the facts!

Before we get our hopes up

We had better keep in mind that during Nixon's presidency, they didn't have electronic voting machines.

truce?

1. Stephen Colbert is a horrible comedian but would be much more courageous as a probing reporter than the current White House correspondents and MSM reporters.

I don't expect much sense out of someone who can't bother to respond to the right story (unless you're buying into Colbert's onscreen persona and think he's one of the angry conservatives the story is talking about), but Stephen Colbert is an excellent comedian.

The fact that he had a single performance where he didn't play to the audience in the room doesn't change the rest of his body of work. His TV show is by far the funniest thing on TV today.

I've got a Suggestion for a Truce

Let's get Stephen Colbert supporters and detractors to agree on the following two premises and call it a truce:

1. Stephen Colbert is a horrible comedian but would be much more courageous as a probing reporter than the current White House correspondents and MSM reporters.

2. White House correspondents and MSM reporters are much more in tune than Stephen Colbert about public perception of comedy but are scared shitless of doing their jobs.
