I write from Miami, FL in the comfortable assumption that since no letters have been posted on this subject, Katherine Harris has been effectively consigned to the dustbin of history. If she had the remotest chance of winning the Senate race against Bill Nelson, Salon would be filled with missives of righteous, indignant Harris support. Instead, the cupboard is bare, and the Bush-led Republican Party, which owes so much to this woman for pulling off the lie-laden coup of the century in 2000, has not only effectively deserted her but also has done everything it can to convince her to get out of the Senate race so that someone with a snowball's chance can jump in before the filing deadline next month. No bites... Gee, Katherine, I wonder how you feel about that? You should be grateful, actually, that the media ARE (yes, "media" is a plural noun) asking you about your eye makeup instead of how it feels to be left adrift, bereft and humiliated by the very people who you helped put into office with your duplicity. You've suffered so much since then... don't you feel they owe you? Aren't you outraged that they talked you out of running in 2004 to save Florida for George W's ass in the presidential, only to diss you to the max this year by bending over backwards to get somebody, anybody in the race besides you? Is that what you were referring to when you mentioned guys and their "diminutive size"? Perhaps... or maybe it was just a Freudian slip. What your comment says to me is that, down deep (and this is your tragedy, Katherine), you understand that our nation is led by little, little men — men that you helped put there. And since you did that, they have lied us into a war that has killed 2,500 American soldiers and tens of thousands of innocent Iraqis. I hope you can look at yourself in the mirror when you get up in the morning — and I'm not talking about your eye makeup.
Harris has certainly learned the classic Nixon tactic, or maybe it's just a genetic trait of Republicans. The standard template is something like, "I would never call my opponent a ____________________, of course he isn't a ___________________, and anyone who claims I said my opponent is a __________________ is just wrong and mean spirited."
Fill in the blank for yourself: crook, adulturer, child molester, wife beater, homosexual, Don't you just love it? The non-denial-denial.
Katherine Harris is very much like George Bush in that they both seem utterly incapable of even conceptualizing the fact of their own mediocrity.
Blue eye shadow or no, you don't have to watch Harris long before keying in on her preening narcissism. The sooner she is relegated to her proper role as minor footnote, the better. As to George Bush, unfortunately it's far too late for him to assume his proper foot note status.
