Illegal act? Check!
Unethical and unpopular President? Check!
Principled stand? Errrrr ... not so much.
There was a law to deal with procuring warrants for wiretapping.
pResident Bush found the law inconvenient, and chose to ignore it, even as he assured the American people that warrants were always being secured for wiretapping.
"Now, by the way, any time you hear the United States government talking about wiretap, it requires -- a wiretap requires a court order. Nothing has changed, by the way. When we're talking about chasing down terrorists, we're talking about getting a court order before we do so."
- pResident Bush, April 20, 2004
Bush later admitted that he ignored the law, and further stated he intended to continue ignoring it!
How much more simple could it be?
What the hell is wrong with the Dems? Get over having your feelings hurt, and take a stand on principle for a change. You may even grow to like it.
Switch parties Feingold. Go for Green. Hillary will lose. I think the republicans are supporting her campaign. We all know she supports the war and the spying. The top down methodology of the democratic party is selecting a Preseidential candidate that democratic voters will not rally to support. Its a mistake.
I am a lifelong Democrat. All of those spineless Dems in Congress are going to get what they deserve. It's no wonder that no one takes any of them seriously. They don't stand for anything. Disgusting.
Russ Feingold is probably representing the views of many citizens. It's a pity the other Democrats are too gutless to stand up to this corrupt administration. Feingold did not vote for this invasion. He did not vote for the Patriot Act. He wants to censure this bunch of liars for illegally invading our privacy. As Feingold points out, our privacacy can already be invaded and legally..and that's the way they should do it. What is wrong with the Democrats? They seem totally cowed by these crooks. Russ Feingold for President. Wake up Democratic Senators!
Feingold/Hackett '08. Has a nice ring to it. At this point Gore even looks like the best candidate possible.
What bothers me most is Obama. After the beautiful speech at the Convention last year and the power of his ideas, to see him assimilated into the Borg that is the current DNC is heartbreaking.
Face it Hillary, Reid, Feinstein, et all. The Republicans are right about you.
Do you ever get the feeling that you're living in some sort of alternate universe? Everything "looks" as it should, but nothing is quite right.
I've been torn about the prospect of Hillary running for Pres. I'm not particularly fond of her, oh she's smart and articulate which is a definite step up from the pres we've got now, but I don't feel she really stands for anything other than the advancement of her career. But, if she ran I'd feel some obligation as a woman to vote for her if only to encourage other women to continue to seek high political offices, and it would be great to have Bubba back in the White House! But this has sealed the deal. Hillary you've lost my vote. Democrats should be worried, very worried. We've been waiting a long time for Dubya to mess up, to have a clear opportunity to take back some power and to check his irresponsible administration, and now you've wasted it. And it's not just Hillary. Dems all over the country are losing votes by not taking a real stand. Shame on you. Unfortunately you'll reap what you've sown and the rest of us will continue to get bad government.
This does seem like strange behavior from a party that has all it's ducks in a row. But maybe playing it safe is the best move. If you rush into an offensive, you always stand the chance of shooting a co-hunter in the face...
But seriously, Senate Democrats may be making a wise choice. A cornered snake who is directly threatened will lash out at anything placed before it's nervous little snout. The Republican party no doubt is waiting for its turn to leap out and denounce ANY mis-step by the Democratic party as to divert the bad press they've been stewed in.
Senator Feingold's proposition may seem like a strong move to the Anti-Bush movement, even a necessary one. But it is also one that could easily backfire. And considering the current proliferation of corruption on the Hill, I don't blame the Dems for holding back.
The key to a successful chess game is to watch the board and wait for the perfect time to strike. A premature offensive could be disasterous.
I wouldn't worry about the Republicans bouncing back on their own. President Bush can't seem to keep his feet out of his mouth nor make a viable fact-based decision for the good of his people. He will continue to bury himself despite the apparent ambivalence on the Democratic Party.
We need to focus more on implementing positive programs than to shun the negative mis-steps of an obviously deranged demagogue.
The GOP went hard after Clinton and now they control all 3 branches of the government, as well as the press. The Dems needs to realize that being nice to get along is not going to get you anything. Well, it might get you more corporate donations to your reelection campaign, which is probably why they are doing it. It is not going to win elections, however. They are being painted as weak by the GOP and they are acting like they are weak. This just boggles my mind.
Will someone please explain to me what the Dems have to lose by pushing this censure? I hate reading opinions saying it's "too risky." Too risky how, exactly? When you are the minority party, you win by going on the offensive, not by hiding and hoping elections will just fall into your lap.
Feingold/Hackett '08, indeed. Or, at least, Richardson/Feingold. Clinton won in '92 and '96 by standing up to the Republicans and knowing their game better than they did. Why can't anyone in Congress besides Russ see this? Including Hillary!?
The Republicans played the Dems by forcing an early vote on the censure resolution. And they got exactly what they wanted. So, what if the Dems refused to give Frist that outcome and all voted for it? Certainly would have been a different story coming out of this.
Where is my man Howard Dean in all of this? Seems like a play he could have understood and appreciated. Put the Republicans and the Administration on the defensive. But no, we're back to square negative one.
