If Bush dumped Cheney, would anyone want the job?

Amid speculation about the vice president's future, the president's approval rating hits an all-time low.

One name, two words, Brother Jeb

Is there any job Condi would turn down?

Rice has been consistently wrong about everything over the past 6 years and the press has never had the nerve to question her. I think she would be a brilliant choice for this administration.

not going anywhere

Why would Dick Cheney be seen as a liability to George Bush's stay the course strategy in Iraq? After all, it's really Cheney's strategy. Every suspected from the outset that Dick cheney would be calling the shots in this administration, and now, day by day, the truth of that belief is becoming clearer and clearer. The vice President's abysmal approval ratings mean nothing to this crowd. Bush is a puppet. The real king will not abdicate the throne.

Jeb acts these days like he's running for something

The buzz here in Florida for the past year and a half has been that Cheney will step down for "health reasons" after the `06 elections. Three vice presidents have died in office, although nobody ever hears about them. And presidents used to switch vice presidents up until Roosevelt's last term.

Then, the word goes, Jeb will step up to replace him after leaving the Gov's mansion. Jeb's been making a lot of straddle-the-fence political comments, such as saying that Evolution is a scientific fact but, no, it shouldn't be part of the school curriculum.

That sounds bizarre, but could it be any more bizarre than naming your personal attorney as a Supreme Court candidate? Or giving the government of Dubai a deal to run America's ports? Certainly nothing that Congress has done in the last five years gives the Bush White House any reason to believe they can't get their way on everything they want. The legislative branch of the federal government has pretty well abdicated.

Questions for the "Forty-Niners"

"Fifty-one percent of Americans say that Bush doesn't care about people like them".

Okay, I've done the math ... that means forty-nine percent of Americans say that Bush DOES care about people like them. What in God's name are you basing this on? His tax cuts for the wealthy? Mr. Compassionate Conservative's complete indifference to the victims of Katrina, then and now? His gutting of Federal agencies like the Mine Safety and Health Administration that are supposed to be looking out for your health, safety and welfare? His sending your sons and daughters and your neighbors' sons and daughters off to Iraq to get shot at or blown up? His slashing of the budget for veterans' benefits? His really swell prescription drug program that you or your parents are stuck with that won't even let the government negotiate lower drug prices for you? His opposition to stem cell research so all of you can die of whatever ails you instead of maybe being cured?

Oh wait, how stupid can I be? I forgot - he's going to make darned sure you and your daughters can't get an abortion. And while you're all sitting around waiting for all those unwanted babies to be born he's keeping all of you safe from terrorists. Of course, he's doing this at the expense of some of your civil liberties, and maybe some people are being illegally detained and quite possibly tortured in the process, and it's costing this country a crapload of your hard-earned tax dollars but, what the hell, I guess 49% of you think that's a small price to pay for your safety.

Insight pushes 18 hour lie

Insight Magazine:

The sources reported a growing rift between the president and vice president as well as their staffs. They cited Mr. Cheney's failure to immediately tell the president of the accidental shooting of the vice president's hunting colleague earlier this month. The White House didn't learn of the incident until 18 hours later.

Per Time Magazine's timeline of events (http://www.time.com/time/nation/article/0,8599,1159347,00.html):

As described by the White House spokesman at a pair of rowdy briefings and in a follow-up e-mail to reporters, Cheney accidentally shot a 78-year-old hunting companion on a ranch near Corpus Christi on Saturday at about 5:30 p.m. local time, or 6:30 p.m. in Washington. A traveling aide to the Vice President gave what one official privately called a "heads up" to the staff at the White House Situation Room, who notified White House Chief of Staff Andrew H. Card Jr. He called President Bush around 7:30 p.m. "to inform him that there was a hunting accident" in the Vice President's group, a spokesman said, but Card "did not know the Vice President was involved at that time," according to an e-mail to White House reporters. Rove, a deputy chief of staff, later spoke to the ranch owner, who is a longtime friend, and discovered that the Vice President had acccidentally shot someone. Rove called Bush shortly before 8 p.m. to tell him, according to the e-mail.

And with that, 90 minutes becomes 18 hours.

For the Jeb speculators

I believe that the President is forbidden from appointing a relative to a federal office. That law was passed after John Kennedy appointed Robert Kennedy to be his Attorney General.

Oh, the Arrogance!

I love the unspoken presumption in the story that Cheney will resign after the 2006 elections. That unspoken presumption is the "Of course, the Republicans will still control Congress after the 2006 elections." Even if that arrogant assumption is really being made, those who are making that assumption may get a rude awakening if (or, as I hope, "when") the Democrats take control after the elections. It's a long time until November, but I'm encouraged by the Bush administration's seeming ability to screw up everything it touches to return the Democrats to power.

ON DUMPING CHENEY

I'm glad to see the tone is now that it's entirely possible Chimpy could dump Crashcart. It wasn't too long ago we all posted a long string of letters of how Cheney was really in charge... he calls the shots... it's all his policies... etc.

Let's get the personal dynamics straight once and for all: Bush is the little rich bastard in charge, the lazy, sarcastic, useless, hateful kid we all despised in school, while quietly deferring to his family's wealth and position. Cheney and his ilk are the employees of this family, pumped up to make them feel important, no matter how stupid and incompetent they are. The minute their usefullness ends, they're gone... some other suckass will step right up.
